I never really understood the relationships some women have with their hair colorists and stylists. I tried salon after salon--big, small, ethnic, specialty--but never felt like I found "my person." Eventually, I convinced myself it was just me, that maybe I didn't care that much about my hair. But that wasn't true. As an Asian woman with long, dark hair, I kept running into the same frustration: colorists pushing blonde or red highlights, never really listening when I asked for deep, rich tones that enhanced what I already had. Stylists, meanwhile, always seemed to want to razor cut or experiment with something trendy, rather than work with my natural texture and preferences. When I first went to George, it wasn't love at first visit either. My initial stylist wasn't quite the right fit--but they listened. And more importantly, they helped connect me with Maude for color and Dae for cuts. That changed everything. It's honestly mind-blowing how much finding the right people has transformed my relationship with my hair. I used to cut it once every 8-9 months, assuming it didn't make much difference for my straight, "boring" hair. Now, I actually look forward to my appointments every six weeks. What used to feel just "fine" now regularly earns compliments on both the color and the cut. I've been seeing Mohamed for my haircuts and I love him! He's super chatty in the best ways possible and always makes my hair feel so alive. I have hair that's on the thinner side and he always knows how to layer my hair in a way that makes it look fuller. Courtney is my hair colorist from heaven. I have very dark hair, so dark that it looks basically black. I will never ever trust anyone but Courtney with my hair being colored. She appreciates and understands that I am a low maintenance with my hair and that I only get my hair colored once a year. So glad I found this place after some bad experiences at other local salons. Based on reviews and photos I booked with Maude to fix a bad balayage I had gotten elsewhere. She immediately understood the situation and confirmed that what I was looking for isn't what I had gotten. She thoroughly explained her approach to fixing it and it turned out even better than I imagined. The color is rich and stunning while still looking natural. Everyone was so kind and I felt truly relaxed and looked after the entire time I was there, whether it was being offered hot tea with regular refreshes, a place to put my bag, a blanket for the washing station, etc. The wash tubs are also unlike any other I've experienced in that they are actually comfortable and don't hurt your neck! I can not recommend Maud enough! I was seeing another high profile chicago hairstylist before her and was incredibly unhappy.. always left with mediocre results and incredibly impersonal experience, and difficult appointment availability. I was recommended to go to Maud and Maud has transformed my hair!! As a blonde it's hard to find someone who just nails it and she sure does. I see her for balayage , cut, and style. She is so good at color and I feel like I can go longer between appointments with a beautiful grow out, which is awesome maintenance for being a blonde. She can get me in to see her when needed and is incredibly professional. She also cuts my hair so well giving me layers with body that I can easily style myself. She does a phenomenal job with color and balayage, but she also has taught me so much about my hair. She genuinely cares about her clients and has helped me have the healthiest hair I've ever had in my life in just a few months. I love the conditioning treatments she does when she colors my hair. I haven't found these at any other salon and it's helped my hair and color so much. She's also fun to talk to and makes you feel comfortable. I never have to be nervous about my hair. She took my hair from brassy outgrown orange brown blonde to beautiful, bright, blonde and healthy in months. I can not recommend maud enough especially for balayage and cut!! After researching multiple salons I ended up trying out for a haircut. The stylist barely spoke to me before I went to the wash bowl where a very inexperienced asst attempted to wash my hair. Then got to the chair waiting for the stylist overheard her conv w the prior client who did not like her hair. It seems to me that this stylist took that feedback not so well & projected it on me. She never really attempted conversation & I kept trying. Nope. I even mentioned how it's been a year since I got highlights. Nope nothing no engagement at all. She maybe spoke to me a total of 5 minutes the Whole appointment. I'm scent sensitive & nicely asked what she was about to put in my hair, grabbed a towel huffed and wiped the product off her hands. I bent over niceness & said oh let me smell it, might be ok! Overly explained my allergies etc. she allowed me to smell & I enthusiastically said oh yeah that's ok. Of course I shut my mouth & just nodded when she put heat styler in. That fragrance was not ok but I was afraid to say anything. The haircut was fine, she kept cutting & took way more than agreed upon. And when I got home she didn't trim the shorter pieces around my hairline that were like 5-6". To end the appt she barely walked me to the front & said you should get your hair trimmed in 6 weeks. No thank you no nice to meet you nothing. As someone who worked in the industry a long time ago in marketing, I know this is not what the industry would like to hear. Or the salon owner. It's a service & a potential new client that expressed interest in spending more $$ at your salon. After this experience I wouldn't dare go back to only be treated like this. Had a wonderful experience here with Maud and Patty for balayage services. I have been frequenting the Cristiano salon for many years now, and really struggled with the colorists there. I had balayage done there several times, and each one ended with a need for color corrector and returning back to a solid dark color. Essentially, they were very lengthy, costly processes that inevitably damaged my hair without ever achieving any beautiful color. While I still love the salon for cuts/styles, I am switching over to George the Salon for color services and possibly more. The atmosphere is very casual-chic. It is a nice salon, but it isn't stuffy. The women that I met from the front to the back of the house were all equally cordial, happy, and welcoming. Great start to the salon day! Balayage- Maud was exceptional when it came to listening AND providing advice and guidance. I have friends that come here for color, and Maud seemed to be best (IMO) at working on dark brunette hair. She helped lift my ends' color to blend with my natural dark brown, and added beautiful chocolate brown balayage pieces throughout my hair. She also recommended an Olaplex treatment that saturated my hair for nearly 25minutes. I'm glad we did it! I felt very confident in Maud and her style/vision, so much that I was able to truly enjoy the salon experience after having dreaded getting color done for so long! Checkout was quick and easy! TIPS are CASH or Venmo/Quickpay (tips cannot be placed on a card). Highly recommend Maud for color services, and The George Salon for an all-encompassing, worthwhile salon experience! I've been to $20 barbers and paid as much as maybe $150 when we lived in LA at some rip off place in Beverly Hills. So that's my background. The front desk associates were so pleasant, took my coat for me, seated me in the waiting area and got me a coffee. As I observed the buzzing staff, it was so neat to notice how each person had an important function in the overall experience, and they all seemed to move the process forward with such fluidity. From there Megan and I sat and talked about my vision for my hair. She looked at photos I had brought and actively listened to my long list of instructions. She was up front and told me it would take a few visits to get to the exact place I want to be, but she told me exactly what she was planning to do and made sure I was ok with it. Once we agreed on a plan, she was off to the races. She was so attentive, patient with my very thick hair that took far more product than she was probably anticipating, and she checked in with me several times to get me more coffee, water, etc. Before Megan started on my color service, Melanie spent time talking with me about my vision for the cut. She was also very helpful, telling me how she thought we could get my hair to a better place. When it came time to do the cut she went above and beyond to show me how to style it as well. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!! I had just moved to Chicago from San Francisco and desperately needed a hair cut and color. I am very wary of new salons and have wavy hair so it is easy to run into someone that does not know what to do with that resulting in a bad cut. I am very loyal to my stylists and have been seeing the same guy for years but obviously needed a new stylist upon relocating. After a lot of online searching I decided to go get a consult at George the Salon. The receptionist was absolutely wonderful, she listened to my wants and connected me with a stylist she felt would be my best match - Maud a seasoned stylist experienced in Balayage (my preferred color process). I went to the consult and Maud was PERFECT she came up with a game plan that took everything I desired and added things that made the whole idea better. I returned for the cut and color and Maud was lovely and attentive and so focused on my hair and the outcome - I could tell she is dedicated and loves what she does which alleviated any anxiety about my final outcome. The staff was lovely, I was offered a wonderful selection of beverages and had some delicious coffee, my shampoo process and gloss were great and the salon itself is beautiful, clean, and inviting. The final product was INCREDIBLE, I cannot stop looking at my hair in the mirror because I love it so much. It is above and beyond what I had hoped for and I am so in love with it. I cannot recommend this salon enough - and Maud's skill is unparalleled. Three stars goes to the salon itself which is beautiful and honestly, most of the staff are wonderful as well. I just had a bad experience that wasn't completely remedied and for the price? It just wasn't worth it. The person did try to go back and fix the color job which I really did appreciate - but the color faded within a week's time, and I also gave them a heads up that my skin is super sensitive and urged them to do a patch test on me before adding a base color to my scalp - that didn't happen and I was stuck with a itchy/scabby scalp (and ears) for over a week. Which definitely killed my sleep for the first four nights... :( I really wanted to stay positive about this place but I feel like any attempts at reaching out to get this fixed, ends in me feeling like a burden to them. read more

Let me first start by saying, I mean no harm when I write this review. In fact, I actually debated on writing it for months, but with everything going on I feel it is my moral duty to say something and to speak up. The first time I visited this establishment was September of 2019. I made an appointment a week before and told the woman on the phone exactly what I wanted--a relaxer for fully natural hair. I repeated this to her several times, and she remarked that she understood. Upon booking my appointment she told me she made a time slot for roughly ~45 minutes. I was very puzzled because the type of treatment I requested especially with natural African-American hair would require much more than the time suggested. I asked if she was sure that the style would be able to be done in that time frame, she said yes but reassured me that she would extend the time just to give me peace of mind so I wouldn't feel rushed. I thanked her. Fast forward a week and I show up for my appointment. Upon arrival everyone is nice, I genuinely have no complaints about the hospitality and charisma of the workers. When I sat in the seat I was approached by my stylist (whom I will not name out of respect and love, but if you're curious please just send me a private message). He looked at my hair, ran his finger on it and said "I can't do this." My heart literally dropped. I had something important to do the next day and I felt embarrassed. He further exclaimed "I can't do your hair, I only do touch ups. No one here can do your hair you'll have to get the virgin relaxer done somewhere else and then you can come back to me for touch-ups." (Paraphrasing). My body heated and I started to become very sad--first I knew my hair texture wasn't like others' in the salon, but to be told that nobody could do my hair in a room with 10+ stylists really hurt. He kept telling me he couldn't do my hair but said he would try to figure something out. He looked at the sheet and said "your appointment is for only 45 minutes I wouldn't even have the time." I got so frustrated because I made sure the woman on the other end of the line during extended my appointment. I told him how it was an error on the salon's end because I made sure to make an extended appointment--I knew this process would take time. Fast forward after about 30 minutes of watching everyone scramble to figure out my hair situation...in a hair salon, he came back and said he would try to do my hair but that other workers would come and help. So at one point i literally had 2 people doing my hair at once (i was so embarrassed), As he began the process he made comments like "Oh you have "good" black hair. I thought it would be much harder to come through your hair." (Paraphrasing). Again, I know he meant well, but that comment wasn't okay and honestly at this point I was just embarrassed by the whole situation. I ended up loving my hair--I think I went once or twice more to this place after that. I don't write this review to be rude, to be malicious, or anything of the sort. I write this because it's such a wonderful establishment but it lacks the diversity and inclusion of stylists who can do ALL hair types (or at least that is the impression I received). I am not a hair stylist by any means so I can't speak to extensively to that, but for any customer to walk in and hear the words "I can't do your hair, come back once it's easier for me." (again paraphrasing), is a slap in the face. I'm not sure what can be done about this, but I hope in the future this establishment or the hair styling industry generally becomes more progressive and adaptable to dealing with all different hair types. I got the BEST haircut from stylist Nick last weekend. He's an expert- listened to what I wanted, talked me through what he was going to do, took his time to really shape my hair, and styled it nicely at the end. I alternate wearing my hair curly and blown out, and he did what no stylist has been able to do for me- make it look great to wear both ways! I used to live in NYC and would get my hair cut at Sam Brocato (high quality but way more $)- my experience at George was way better. All the staff working there were kind and helpful too. This has been long over-due. I've been to George The Salon before for hair cut/styling based on a friend's referral. I met with Julianne and had a very satisfying experience! So when I had a black-tie event (Feb 2018) to attend to one evening, I scheduled an appointment with Julianne to get my hair styled in an updo. The day seemed hectic and Julianne's prior appointment seemed to have run past time. I showed her pictures of the updo that I wanted. In the limited time we had left (we were running about 20min past the appointment time), Julianne did her best. Although the updo wasn't similar to the photos I've shown, it was still extremely beautiful and I was very happy with the outcome! Given the delay and that the updo didn't come out quite like my expectations, Julianne was a sweetheart and offered to waive the charges. This just shows how empathetic and considerate Julianne is to clients and customer service. I would gladly come back and recommend Julianne for all hair-styling needs! read more

I purchased a $100 gift card from a charity function of @ properties from The George salon before the pandemic... September 17th. I drove from Andersonville and paid $16.00 for parking to add more money to the card and make an appointment for a facial. Unfortunately for me, they have a new system and can't look up my gift card number! They talked to me like I was lying and I was trying to cash in a used donation coupon. I asked to speak to a manager and I was told that she wasn't in. I left my name, number, and card number... I waited and called a total of 4x finally, Alice called me back Oct. 26th She repeated her mantra of "it is our policy that all gift cards expire one year from issue date" over & over again.. mind, the gift card has no issue date nor expectation date. She refused to work with me at all! They don't need new clients. Then, she informs me that she WAS there the Friday Sept 17th when I initially walked in and I was lied to. Lying seems to be a pattern, when I would call, the manager was in until I left my name then, she was just headed into a meeting! I contacted a hairstylist which I won't name, she told me she would get back to me to check for a weekend appointment. She never got back to me at all. I followed up after the date I had requested passed and she "apologized" but never suggested or offered to re schedule. She was so arrogant about it. I got the sense that these people really don't want to be bothered with first time clients (which they don't realize can become long term). It's great that you focus on current clientele but don't forget when business is down you'd wish you had treated your average joe with a little respect.
