I always wonder if restaurants really take these reviews into consideration. I hope they look at this one because I truly feel I can help. First off, the staff in Switchback knows how to prepare and grill a steak. No question about that. Excellent. BUT... Their choice in pairing is off. I am from Mexico. I know what Asada is. I have had it in weddings, backyard BBQs, and so many other occasions. If you are from my culture, you truly understand what it is. The Asada plate is wrong and it shows in its flavor profile and pairing. That amazing steak you guys make is correct. Putting it on top of fries does not work. First off, that derives from a Peruvian dish called Lomo Saltado, which is prepared differently. When you "drizzle" olive oil to finish it off, you over-coat the fries, making it a bad taste when combined with the rest of the dish. Back to the main point: you have this awesome steak that was made so well, what do you do with it? Some random red salsa and some pickled jalapenos? It was a failure, guys. My advice to you, which would transform and make this dish a huge hit, is this: Add guacamole. Yes, we all love it, but I have never eaten Asada without guacamole. It introduces color to your plate and provides the needed flavor profile. Add Cilantro to the side. Three tortillas for all of that meat is sad. Add either three full-size corn or flour tortillas, or double the number initially offered. A lime. Pico de Gallo and the jalapeno you provide. Your staff was friendly and prompt. We headed to Switchback on our honeymoon after a local's recommendation. They had a wonderful wooden patio in the middle of the parking spots out front, so we snagged a corner seat in the shade and enjoyed some people watching. When our server came over we were still in the midst of debating which margarita to get. She recommended the Switchback to start off, which is a shot of silver tequila, a jalapeño pickle back and a 7oz Modelito or Coronita. After a long day walking on the river, this was just what we were craving. I've recently become obsessed with Mexican Street Corn - Elote. Our caterer at our wedding two days before had made it, and I needed more of that in my life. We ordered that as an appetizer and then split three tacos - Smoked Brisket, Chicken Tinga, and (what I think might have been) Carnitas. It's possible I forgot the third we ordered thanks to the delicious and potent Switchback. Everything was on point - flavorful and tender with a hint of spice and a perfect amount of acidity. We split a margarita and a Paloma after, since we were staying at an Airbnb in the middle of town and were walking, and settled in for a nice long two hour visit on that patio. Loved the atmosphere! We're from Texas and usually avoid any Mexican food places when out of state but we read the reviews and decided to give it a try. And it was definitely worth it! We got the trio dip and the salsa was good for these Texans. Queso and guac were also very good. I had the rice bowl with shredded chicken and it had all the flavors you would expect. Very good. I also had the prickly pear margarita and it was almost too pretty to drink, but it was delicious. Husband had bierra queso tacos and would've ordered some to go if it wouldn't make him sick from engorging himself. Great service and friendly staff. read more

Eh, went here based on the good reviews but had an average experience. I had a tofu rice bowl which contained over-cooked rice and a measly handful of ingredients. They seemed to be out of a majority of things in the kitchen, probably due to the fact it was a holiday weekend. I can't say I enjoyed the food, and I can't say I really hated it either. Maybe they were just having a rough day, it's hard to tell. Our server was very sweet and seemed to be running the whole show, alongside another employee. While I'm a little conflicted about this taco place on Main Avenue, I can still recommend it. It wasn't the cleanest dining area I've seen lately, and that is definitely an issue as COVID remains a threat in this area. The service can be a little slow, though perfectly friendly. Unfortunately, this restaurant is very, very loud making it difficult to carry on any conversation at all. That's the bad: the rest of my review will concentrate on the good things. The menu is small, but offers something for everyone. The highlight is definitely the street tacos, but they also have quesadillas, various chips and dip, very good elote (Mexican roasted corn), several choices for the kids as well as veggie and vegan offerings. I think the tacos are excellent, though some American diners might find them too small. I particularly like the carnitas, adobada and surprisingly, the mushroom and veggie taco. The elote with flaming hot cheeto dust is a nice extra, and not available elsewhere in town. Finally, their house made hot sauce is really good, and I put it on everything. They also offer some good local beer on draft and their cocktail menu was imaginative. I would give this place another star if solely reviewing the food. I think the prices are fair. The tacos definitely compete with the best from Durango's other fine taco trucks and restaurants. Not a bad experience, but needs a little tweaking. You could do worse. Happy travels! So came here on our little stop in Durango and dang this was a solid taco spot. Below is what we ordered in terms of deliciousness ranking: 1. Salsa and chips: I know this is basic, but the salsa was DELICIOUS. Like scrape the bowl clean type of good. Was very impressed. 2. Carne Asada: Get this taco!! Comes with this awesome Crema that has this great tang. 3. Carnitas: Also awesome, the pickle onions make the difference and they had this great flavor and was very succulent. 4. Shrimp Taco: Perfectly cooked shrimp with a great guac. Not the best but also not the worst. 5. Mushroom Taco: Was ~fine~ not super ground breaking. Would exchange this with any of the above. 6. Chicken Adobo: Okay, not as succulent as the carnitas and fairly basic. Lacked flavor. 7. Birria: utterly disappointing, little flavor with dry brisket. If you order the top 4 items guaranteed. Delicious experience. In terms of food would give this 4 stars, but the ambiance and the service is what gives it its 5th star here. read more

Came here for the amount of outdoor seating (in front and back). Genuinely great to see all the room, even inside! I enjoyed the front too since it's right in the middle of historic Durango. We followed our waiter's suggestions and enjoyed the chips with queso and guacamole (all delightful) as well as both the birria tacos and quesadilla. I did not expect much from seeing birria with cheese; it seemed like an odd combo, but it actually came out as cheesy taco shell and birria inside. Super yummy, and totally suggest either of the birria plates. We were visiting Durango from Southern CA and looking for a casual spot to grab dinner. We stopped into to Switchback on a whim and were very happy that we did. The Bean Dip was flavorful and a nice start to the meal. The Carnitas Tacos were juicy with the perfect amount of salt and the green salsa on top was excellent. Lastly, the Birria Quesotacos were some of the best I've eaten. I've eaten these tacos all over LA and the ones we had here were as good or better. This place is very vegan friendly and are open to customize the food per your dietary preferences. I ordered 2 vegan tacos - mushroom and tofu and a box of fries. Interestingly fries was the costliest one on the order but was later surprised how much tofu it had so basically it seemed more like tofu salad with fries. Vegan tacos tasted awesome I specifically liked the tofu one because it seemed it was marinated for quite some time and it had got that spicy and tangy flavor. Will surely suggest this to others. I love this place! It's my fave local restaurant! I usually get the ensalada with the chicken abodabo (spelling?) I've also had the tacos and love the chicken, shrimp, and veggie.
