I spend a lot of time around St. Elmo. I frequent a lot of the places in The Yard like Spokesman Coffee, St. Elmo Brewing, and all the food trucks throughout. Until this year, I never noticed right across the street was Vacancy Brewing and the SXSE Food Co food truck. I took advantage of an Austin Asian Restaurant Passport that benefited a local charity, while also promoting local Asian restaurants. SXSE Food Co was one of the participating restaurants, and I wanted to take the opportunity to try Laotian food. The food was solid, with the flavorful sweet and savory balance similar to Thai and Vietnamese food. The skewers were solid but the crispy fried rice was my favorite dish. It had amazing texture with the crispiness and chewy nature of the sticky rice. There's also freshness from the herbs. The dish overall reminded me of the savory sticky rice with Chinese sausage we make in Cantonese cuisine, and the nostalgia made me love it that much more. read more

While at Vacancy Brewing, we needed a small bite so we tried SXSE. We ordered an hour before closing so I'm sure they were a little annoyed with us and it showed. Once the dude brought us the food, he just dropped it off and left. I felt a little bad for ordering late, but also, they were still open. Anyways, the sausage was great! Unfortunately the food we got completely missed the mark and I'm so disappointed I would not return. The total came out to about $40 and we end up not eating most of it and got a real dinner elsewhere. There was a couple people sitting at the patio area when we got there but I believe they were having beers from the nearby brewery. We were really the only customers. According to the online website from the QR code, it claimed our food would take 30 minutes. We ended up waiting that time in our car because it was very cold out, however they did not text us when the food was ready. Because of that the food was already cold. However, I don't think the food would have been good even if it was warm. Ribeye skewers - pretty good seasoning, but the meat was very chewy and rough. The rice was under cooked and had a crunch to it that I did not enjoy. Chicken skewers - the texture of it inside was like boiled chicken, not tender, really not good at all. I love Bob's Laotian cooking! The wings are flavorful and crispy ( I am drooling just thinking about them again). The larb is perfect with the soft pillowy rice. The sausage with the sauce is perfection. and then i am able to wash it all down with yok yok beer which is rice based. Ordering is easy. Had a chance to try Seske Fud Ko and was very impressed. Got the sausage and the award-winning filet. Beware the spice levels are no joke, so make sure to adjust your preference as necessary. Between the two I really enjoyed the sausage, and it's what I'll be coming back here for. (I'm also excited to try their pork rice). The portions were a little small for a full meal, but the dishes work great as a snack to go along with some cold beers from the next door brewery. Delicious ribeye steak skewers and crispy fried rice from a food truck outside of Vacancy Brewing. We came on a busy Thursday night and our orders still came out pretty quickly. The fried rice was crispier than any I've ever tried before, and the ribeye was not too fatty and had excellent flavor. My favorite crawfish found here - and for a very fair price! My mouth was having a seizure trying to understand the explosive flavor. Was it fish sauce, garlic, and lemongrass? Warning: this Laotian crawfish is highly addictive! Stopped by on a Sat afternoon. Food arrived quickly. We ordered the sausage, pork buns and the sticky rice. The sausage was the standout. It was very flavorful and came on a big bed of rice. The pork buns were a bit dry and likely needed some kind of sauce but still tasty. The egg rolls were very good but the crispy rice was excellent. In fact, next time I may double up on the rice. It's pretty much self service. You order from your table and pay. Waited for ages for their Tour de Austin to come around to my neck of the woods on a day that I could make it out in time, and my verdict is: Drive to wherever it currently is because no matter how far, IT'S WORTH IT. The starring dish that I tried was the Ribeye Skewer with Crispy Fried Rice (Nam Khao Tod) with jeow som sauce, and the mango sticky rice. I had the Tom yum soup and ribeye skewers with the crispy fried rice. And ... WOW! Like whoa, first off crispy rice is one of my favorite textual food loves and second holy cow the flavors and the herbs sprinkled in. It's crispy, it's chewy, it's herbaceous, it's salty, it's sweet, it acidic, but most importantly it's freaking deliciousness!! The crispy fried rice is cooked rice that's crisped up and browned while sticking to the bottom of the pot, then it's broken up and mixed together and fried up with with a ham/spam kind of Laotian sausage, THEN, it's topped off with a mixtures of herbs parsley, mint, and perhaps a few other touches.
