Honestly, The best chocolate around. The staff is also so kind and friendly. My family has been enjoying Sydney Boggs my whole life. My 98 year old grandma has been eating it since she was a young lady. I'm fairly sure at this point my grandma lives nearly exclusively off there milk chocolate bulk chunks. Best chocolate I've ever tasted. We discovered Sweet Essentials when we still lived in the Detroit area, and now that we live in Petoskey - just a couple of miles from Kilwin's, which doesn't compare - I wait to get my chocolate exclusively from Sweet Essentials when we visit the Detroit area, and I order it shipped between visits. I always buy the chunk milk chocolate, originally to eat with cashews (my version of chocolate covered cashews), but now I just chop it into smaller pieces and eat it as is. The store is small but packed with yummy treats. Chocolate, chocolate everywhere and what creative designs. Lots of graduation and Happy Father's Day displays. We Spent around $40 on a hand full of Carmels, a s'mores dark chocolate treat, and three little chocolate turtles. Definitely pricy but delicious. read more

I would love to support an independent retailer and give them 5 stars, but I just can't. The chocolate is delicious although quite pricey. Be careful that the chocolate you buy is Sydney Bogg, and not Madeleine chocolate, as some of the prepackaged treats are (such as foiled Easter bunnies and eggs). The customer service was not great, unfortunately. The women behind the counter were unfriendly even though I bought $70 worth of Easter candy. They just threw all my candy in a generic plastic bag, where everything just rattled around. When I unloaded the bag at home, the box of hand decorated Oreos spilled out, and the one saying "Happy Easter" got wrecked, with the lettering crumbled. I feel that if my purchases had been packed in a more sturdy bag this would not have happened. The feeling I got is that the workers just don't care much. It's a shame as Sydney Bogg is an institution. I remember when they were located in south Royal Oak, right next to the Holiday Market. I hope they do better! read more

If you LOVE chocolate like I do you must stop in and give this place your business!! They actually have a lot of the original sydney bogg equipment that was in downtown royal oak. Once they closed down Lisa (the current owner of sweet essentials) (and great name by the way!! :) ) purchased the machines and opened her own business. I have known Lisa and her family for probably 10 years are more. The past year due to COVID was especially hard for local businesses so please make sure to stop on by!! Their chocolate is absolutely amazing! I love everything there! My favorite are the chocolate covered caramels! They have special decorated chocolates for every holiday. The chocolate is so smooth and creamy and you cannot just eat one! If you go here you will not be dissapointed!! During hard times make sure to support local!! I'm in New Jersey and found out about this place through some friends. First of all, I'm into chocolate, and have sampled quite a range. In my book, there are two companies that I put at the very top of that food chain (see what I did there?). One is Royce Chocolates from Japan, which has shops in the United States (not cheap, but an amazing treat - get the matcha nama, keep it refrigerated, enjoy a few cubes of it here and there like you'd sip a fine whiskey). The other is this gourmet mom & pop shop that apparently also has just some of the nicest people you'll ever have the pleasure of talking with working there. And I have never had a single piece of chocolate from them that I didn't absolutely love. If you said to me, "Ok, Jeff, you suggested the matcha nama from Royce's, what specifically should I get from Sweet Essentials?", I'm honestly stuck for a moment because of everything I've received from there, it's ALL so good! Maybe go with an order of their popcorn with the nuts and caramel, and a premium assortment box, as a good starter. Go into this understanding that you're in for a real treat, and if you like chocolate, this is a special gourmet experience. Do you like chocolate? if so forsake all others and come here. The owners here use to work for a once famous candy shop in the Detroit area called Sydney Boggs. Through the yeas the company went through several owners but maintained the high quality chocolates.Unfortunately due to bad management the previous owners ran the highly esteemed chocolate company into the ground. However there were some people that worked for them that had a dream to reopen this candy shop and bring it back to it's former glory. May I say "mission accomplished." This place is most famous for there turtles but anything you try will be the best ever. Come here for your chocolates from now on, it will be more than worth the drive. read more

I won't buy anything from this place. I've walked by their windows many times after closing hours and they leave chocolate sitting out on work tables overnight, leave work stations dirty in general, and leave bags of trash and/or boxes piled up in front of the windows. One of the BEST high-quality food confectioners in Detroit history! They should be part of any "The Best of Detroit" write-up. After the Birmingham store closed, I thought we'd lost it. I had started ordering Lake Champlain Chocolates online (Pricey!!!). But, so glad these folks stepped up to continue such a Sweet tradition! They most certainly give Lake Champlain a run-for-their-$. I think they have more variety than LC. I love the thought of old, time-tested recipes being used. I enjoy sending & giving these good chocolates as gifts. (You may have to pump-up the gift wrap on your own if you want presentation to match the taste -not rating gift wrap : )! ) My favorite treat-like most people- are the Chocolate covered, caramel & pecans (Turtles). I remember the original Sydney Bogg's on Woodward just south of 7 mile. Also used to visit their satellite stores after they expanded. Their chocolate is in my opinion, the best! Then Bogg's went out of business only to be saved some years later by employees who bought the old equipment and opened Sweet Essentials. This place is worth the trip and worth the money if you love chocolate. read more

Chocolate is good but the service is poor. It's a tradition for my wife's family to get chocolate bunnies from here for Easter. In the past we've accepted the high prices ($50 each bunny) for decent quality chocolate, the tradition, and supporting a local business. We'd easily drop $250 on candy! Over the past few years the service has been awful. The staff makes you feel like every question is a stupid one, and that our being there is an inconvenience to them. I'm ready to drop this tradition, and I advise others to look in another direction where your patronage is appreciated. read more
