NEED MORE BERRIES in the scones !!! The last few times I purchased either the Blueberry or raspberry white chocolate (which were my faves) it is difficult to find the fruit. May be 3 blueberries in the entire scone, so mostly eating dough. I would buy these more often if you loaded with fruit and rate 5 stars!!! To make them more enjoyable, I cut into 4 pieces and put my own fruit in the middle. Added a little butter and baked at 350 for 5 minutes. Please just add more fruit? The worst scone I have ever eaten! Just bought a 6 pack of Elwin & Co Scone Bites in the Limoncello flavor from Nino's and my husband and I each took a bite and looked at each other like "what did we just eat". It was dense, dry and tasted somewhat stale, with very little flavor or anything, especially no lemon flavor. We thought maybe hearting one up might make them taste better and have better mouth feel, but NOPE, still heavy and dry and tasteless. What a waste of $6.50! These are in the trash bin. Needless to say we won't be buying any other Elwin & Co products! read more

This hurts to write. This might be the hardest review I'll ever write, all because Elwin is genuinely one of the sweetest people in all of Berkley. And also because of my anticipation, and inevitable disappointment. I have been staring at this exact place for over 8 years of my life, and never got to go. School always started and ended from 7:00am to 3:30pm, which also happens to be the opening and closing times of Elwin's bakery. And finally, on a half day and on my way to work, I stopped in a grabbed what I had time for. I got a Raspberry White Chocolate scone, and a Salted Caramel scone with a little drizzle of vanilla frosting. When I walked in, Elwin greeted me incredible warm, and we had a nice conversation about working in the service industry, despite our completely different tastes. Pizza and sweet scones? Not a HUGE difference, obviously. But this isn't about me, it's about beautiful Elwin. Oh Elwin I love you. I took them to work with me, and I will be 100% honest with you. They were LACKING in MULTIPLE flavor profiles. First of all, the "Raspberry" White Chocolate scone might've been the inspiration for those 1% sugar cereals our parents got us as a kid to "eat healthier". I would be shocked to find out this had any type of berry in it, let alone the Popeye's biscuit type of texture. It's like biting into a beachfront, and not in a good way. I'm trying to imply it's as dry as sand. The Salted Caramel one with the drizzle on it was much better though. But I will admit I really don't taste any of these flavors, at all. I mostly just taste biscuit bread with a little bit of a buttery kick, and I HATE things that are too dry, it ruins the whole experience. And sadly, these are some of the driest scones I've ever had before. Maybe I don't understand the food, hopefully when I get older. Not disrespect to Elwin, or my grandma (of course). One of the most beautiful and special places in all of Berkley in my opinion. I beg of you to AT LEAST try it, regardless of what I have to say about it. Elwin is truly a great guy and he deserves your money, your respect, and your opinion. If you are ever in Berkley in the morning and trying to get a cup of coffee and a bone-scone, come on over to Elwin & Co. It's not terrible. 3/5 read more

Scones are only good on the day they are baked. I was supposed to pick up 5 dozen scones (order taken weeks earlier) and pick them up on Saturday for a Sunday party. I was called 3 days before my event to tell me they would be closed on Saturday (Cruise weekend) and we had to pick them up on Friday instead. I almost hate to even give the bad review here because this place is in my neighborhood and it really used to be outstanding, but feel I need to share. Unfortunately the quality and taste of the scones here have gone way down hill. I had not been into Elwin's in quite a while because the previous couple visits hd been subpar. Tried again today and my worries have been confirmed. Elwin's scones are just not very good these days. They have a spongy consistency and VERY little flavor at all. I had a Groupon to use from Elwin's and I'd been meaning to check it out so I went searching for scones. First off, Yelp gave me wrong mapping directions...has that ever happened to you on the mobile app? Anyways, I finally found Elwin's next to Chet's Rent-All and across from Bagger Dave's. I had envisioned a little boutique bakery but arrived to find a quaint storefront and a nice lady running the counter. I traded my Groupon in for 6 scones. One savory spinach and cheese scone, a chocolate chip, a raspberry, one peach, a cranberry and almond and the sixth escapes me, I think it was cinnamon sugar. I took them to my special lady's for a breakfast sampling. We both liked them all. I'm no expert and I've only made scones once but I thought they were fairly moist (for scones) and the flavors were great. I like the spinach and cheese though it was the driest of the six and the raspberry and the chocolate chip were really wonderful. All the sweet scones were fairly sized whereas the savory was the size of an average biscuit. I'd like to try some of their other baked goods but for now I'd recommend the raspberry for sure! read more

Scones. Really good scones. Not bagels, cookies, cakes, donuts, biscuits, crumpets or pies. Just scones. That's what makes this place so good. It's so well hidden on Coolidge that when you enter the tiny retail "lobby" you feel like you must be part of a very small group that has discovered a hidden gem. Sure they make upwards of 12,000 scones a day to ship out all over the place, but if you drive by, you have to stop in and buy them at the source. The guy at the counter (Elwin?) was friendly and enthusiastic. Okay, fine. I lied. They have more than scones...They do soup now too. Homemade and frozen in a reheatable bowl so when you buy your morning scone, you can pick up a bowl to take to work and enjoy soup and a scone for lunch. Today was my first stop back in after a loooong time. The blackberry sour cream scone improved a rough morning and the barley mushroom soup + spinach cheddar scone were delicious and will probably keep me full for the afternoon. The soup and scone for lunch set me back a whopping $3.50. Stopped by here to use a Groupon recently. I've always liked scones, but preferred cookies or donuts. I always found scones too dry and biscuit-like for me. But my mom likes them, and since she babysits my rat-pack, I thought I should treat her. 2 things happened to me that day: 1) I fell in love with their scones. Especially the chocolate caramel sea salt scone; I mean, can you go wrong with those flavors? No, and it was like a giant cookie that did not survive long enough to meet it's intended- my mother. It was gone by the time I hit Woodward, approx a mile away. 2) I discovered they sell more than just scones, and it's frozen for convenient transport & storage. I ended up with some salmon patties. Elwin himself told me they poach fresh salmon themselves rather than use canned stuff, and it was delish! I also bought some lobster mac & cheese, which I kept frozen for rug-rat consumption. Where have all the bakeries gone? Now I know... Berkley. While other towns lament their loss of baked good palaces, we have our very own secret stuck between a tattoo artist and an equipment rental store on Coolidge Highway. Be not deceived, mine eyes. Inside this otherwise unremarkable storefront are the best darn scones in Detroit. I say that boldly and mean it, because eat one of their $2.50 cheese scones while still warm from the oven and your muscles will unclench, no longer carrying a burden of stress you may not be aware was there. Chocolate chip scones take away the ache of a bad day or a driver soaking you by careening through a mud puddle. For a fruit scone, you'll be prepared to ignore no one came to your birthday party. Why yes, they do make things that much better. They are made with happiness and scintillating joy, mostly natural ingredients, because magic is by definition supernatural. At least six to eight varieties are baked at the start of the day to tempt the wily residents of the People's Republic and Berkley caught on. Check out their streetside menu board for examples of the seasonal or daily special. Elwin's is primarily a catering company and they produce some pretty rocking soups too. None of these namby pamby broths with a sneeze of flavour either. They are robust, flavourful soups given proper soupy names like butternut squash and tomato bisque. It's a bisque that knows it's a bisque, running thick off your spoon and loaded by herbs. Steal one of these babies from the fridge after purchase, heat it up and I guarantee they'll wonder how you made it so good. If you can't cook, you'll be busted and I'm afraid I cannot help you there. This is a great lunch solution at reasonable prices and the quality is just next to homemade. I don't know how to categorize Elwin's, but I can see it as a good place to stock up on pre-made homemade foods. The other reviews and their menu of soups (frozen for you to take home) will probably bring me back in the future, now that I live in the Berkley. Not being from the area, perhaps a semi-retail bakery/catering place must make more sense to locals - I understand Edwin's has been open since the mid 90's I never like leaving a bakery empty handed, so I picked up a spinach and cheddar scone and a blueberry sour cream. I'm not a scone person, but I'm sure once I pop these in the microwave they will be delish. read more

They have the most amazing scones here. Some old standby's and some funky flavors, depending on your taste or mood but all are fantastic. You can find Elwin's scones around in some of the local grocery stores too, but there's nothing quite like getting them fresh from the bakery. A delicious treat. read more

I purchased a Groupon because I live in the area and always heard that they have good scones. Well, these are REALLY GOOD scones. I ordered some chocolate chip, peach, caramel pecan and I must say, they were yummy! They are doing some remodeling, probably to attract more retail business. It's just a tiny little place and if you are driving down Coolidge, you probably wouldn't even notice the storefront unless you were looking for it. Today I was leaving Chet's Rent-All throught alley leading to Wiltshire. Well it was blocked by a delivery truck for the liquor store. I couldn't exit through the parking lot for Elwin & Company because the owner had parked his car blocking access. When I approached him to ask him if he could park his car, he said not my problem. I can't have people driving through "his" parking lot. As I went back out to my truck, a large man followed me out and I confronted him and said what the owner wasn't doing was not very neighborly. He said the owner would have moved his car if I asked nicely. Well the large man wasn't present during our conversation where I ask him nicely. Once the owner said not my problem, I lost my cool and called Berkley Public Safety. They were sending a car and by then I had gone home to finish drying out my basement with a dehu I rented from Chet's. What is happening in our city? Makes me want to move. read more

After hearing about this place via the media, and the sheer reviews given I decided to try them. If you follow me you know I'm about presentation, service and the product. Elwin & Co hits high marks on all. Scones are a very basic cake or quick bread, so to distinguish them you must use top ingredients and TLC, from the (Raspberry White Chocolate, Sea Salt Chocolate Carmel and Blueberry) I was taken on a flavor profile roller coaster. Slightly sweeter than normal scones, the feather light and aire quick bread was absolutely AMAZING! At the time I stop, they currently was out of their signature Mac and Cheese selections, I did order two type of their home made soups (Potatoe & Corn Chowder and Roasted Vegetable & Bean Chili). The verdict is still out, I haven't tried them. But will do a revised review once I've tried them. Overall Edwin & Co is a must try establishment, the experience was a 9 out of 10. read more

I was keeping my eyes open for somewhere to stop for coffee on my way to my son's Saturday morning baseball practice. I don't know why I had never noticed this place the four baseball seasons before. I stopped in to grab a coffee and a scone, which were delicious, and the lady working was so sweet. She was worried that Elwin may have drank all the coffee. He hadn't, but I was just happy to know there was a real, live Elwin. I picked up a dozen scones to take to work. I was really impressed with the variety of scones. The gentleman who was in the front was a little gruff and not really friendly. The scones although had unique flavors, they were a little dense and a bit dry. I even tried bringing one home and heating it up but the taste was not improved. I went to Elwin's for the first time about two weeks ago. I was headed to my girlfriend's parent's house to ask for their blessing to ask her to marry me. I wanted to bring a tasty treat that would add to the celebration and my mom recommended Elwin's scones. Mother knew best! Not only did the scones add to a wonderful 2 hour talk with my future in-laws, but I picked up some more the next week to take to the jeweler's when I went to pick up the ring.
