I've always gone to the Tigard location, but decided to give the Sherwood one a try yesterday. This location was basically located in the center of the Sherwood school district. Like the Tigard location, this symposium was also quaint and small. Gives me an old coffee shop meets bookstore vibe. No high ceilings or fancy mason jar lights here though (if you care about aesthetics for the gram). Ceilings and lights aside, what I do appreciate about this location is additional seating available upstairs. Whenever I'm at the Tigard location, I always feel like I have to compete with people just to get a parking spot (it's tiny) or a table inside. But here, it's no issue and it's great. Coffee wise, they offer the staples with some unique selections, such as their lavender latte, which everyone raves about, along with cardamon latte and chili mocha. I've had the lavender latte before, and it is indeed good. They also have alternative milk options (soy/oat/hazelnut/hemp) for anyone who's lactose free, but for a dollar extra. For this trip, I ordered the matcha latte with oat milk. It was okay, a little bit thick, can taste bits of the matcha powder clumped together (not well mixed) but I'm not that picky. Super cozy spot! Very friendly staff, knowledgeable of the menu and the Burbon selection is IMPRESSIVE!! They have three types of Blantons, and I have only been able to find ONE type SOMETIMES where I'm from. I sat upstairs and the seats that I sat in were SUPER comfortable. The decoration was tasteful, and it felt like everything was in the right proportions. My wife and I have been going to Symposium since we moved to Sherwood about 4/5 years ago. The service is always great and the drinks and food are very are good. Today we took our two year old grandson for hot cocoa. He was sitting on my wife lap on the porch when he suddenly began throwing up without any warning. My grandson and wife were covered in throw up. I went inside to see if I could get some napkins to help them clean up and spoke to the owner. She said she would like to help my wife and grandson get cleaned up. She brought out towels and water. When they were fairly cleaned up, she offered a jacket for my grandson and a sweatshirt for my wife to wear from her lost and found box. I did not get her name, but I just want to thank her for her help and kindness she provided. I can't recommend Symposium enough. read more

While I waited for my buddy to get done with a business meeting, I made my way over to this coffee shop. It sat less than five minutes from my buddy's place, so I way it appropriate to stop here for some food and coffee. I parked in the adjacent lot, which was not paved. But it was no issue, as it did no damage to my rental car. This coffee shop is small, but it has a cozy hometown feel to it. The staff here was very friendly, and went over the different options with me. I decided on the turkey sandwich, and rounded that off with an iced mocha. One of the worker told me that they were out of cranberry sauce, so I had the option of getting it with dried cranberries. I went with it, and the sandwich was still delicious. The mocha was delicious, not too sweet, and packed a good punch of caffeine. I sat down to have my sandwich and coffee. There was limited seating, but I was able to find a spot as it was not too busy that day. The place was small, but nicely kept, and efficiently run. Nice little coffee shop. And Bourbon Coffee... what a great idea! :) The staff is great, and attentive. And it's obvious there are devoted regulars there. The space is tight in there, but I'd rather call it "intimate". There are 2 floors, and multiple rooms... so kind of like a little maze before you settle in with your drink. A little tough to hear when it's crowded, but it's a coffee shop... what do you really expect? Their selection of bourbon and such is good... they're a "restaurant" that can get them, so they're stocked on all versions of Wellers, Blantons, Eagle Rares, etc. I'll have to come back for "Friday Coffee". read more

About a week ago, I came into Symposium coffee and was making conversation with the workers. (Disclaimer: I do talk to them when I come in which is often and I admit that. How this was handled though was very unprofessional.) The manager Amanda came up to me and said in an angry tone "You do know you've been here for twenty minutes right?" and proceeded to saying things (in a demeaning tone) like "I don't mean to be a bitch but-you are distracting my workers." and saying "I don't know if you've sensed my frustration." when she was at the other end of the room. I pay for coffee and a scone every time I come in and am a customer. It was not okay to talk to me like that, as a customer, in such a rude tone. I understand the core of what she was saying and it's okay to be frustrated, but it was handled very unprofessionally and was really hurtful (as I do come in often). Especially that no one had told me anything beforehand and this was completely out of the blue to hear from my end. At the end of the day, businesses continue to progress because of clients and customers, retaining a good customer is key for your business, and the situation could have been avoided by handling employee communications better. Clients should not have been involved or talked to that way. Good clients & regulars should be retained. The core of what she was saying was totally understandable. I have not heard from anyone that I was being too distracting until Amanda came up to me so I did feel a bit shocked. Case and point though, how Amanda handled that was completely inappropriate and demeaning. Especially to a paying customer. I am definitely not coming back. read more

Best coffee place around.Of course you can also order tea or whiskey!! They have a nice menu for breakfast and lunch. Tons of yummy gluten free items to choose from. Plenty of indoor seating with a fireplace and several rooms since it a converted house. Outdoor seating also has Adirondack chairs and fire pits. I always make a stop when I'm in Sherwood. I've even driven over from Tigard for their chocolate chip and ginger cookies! Recently they shut down indoor use and converted their business to drive thru only. I have been coming to Symposium Coffee for years now and it has only been getting better! Head and shoulders above most coffee shops in Portland! With its home town charm this little coffee shop has perfectly captured what it feels like to live in Oregon through the warm decor and seasonal flavors. They have incredibly unique flavors for their drinks like the new Woodsman Latte made with Douglas Fur syrup. As my boyfriend pointed out a woodsman might not have drank it but topped with cloves, cinnamon and orange it really balances out the subtle pine flavor. Highly recommend getting it with oat milk. They are also known for their Lavender Lattes. Symposium Coffee also recently broke into the late night scene with their new collection of local Whiskey's. They sever alcohol Friday and Saturday's. Last but not least the have THE BEST GLUTEN FREE, DAIRY FREE & VEGAN pastries. I'm dairy free and gluten free so I'm always on the hunt for something that tastes like the real thing. I will literally go out of my way to come out here and get one. The breads and cookies taste just like the real deal. It is my favorite place to work and socialize. Be warned it can get loud. A lot of the kids in school like to pop over around 2/3pm. Luckily, they have plenty of seating upstairs as well. This is a unique find. A multi-room space with a really chill vibe. Almost reminds me of a school house. Proudly serving up Stumptown coffee. This morning's delight was a lavender latte. This is Symposium's signature drink and it does not disappoint. A beautifully smooth blend with just a hint of lavender. I was not a huge fan of the lavender bits, but otherwise it was good. The hubs had an americano and it was really good. Very different flavor-wise, more complex than the norm but really smooth and flavorful. This is a nice place to get away from home place. They have reasonably priced items. They have a unique set up, and can be relaxing most of the time. The downside that I have with this place is, that it can get really stuffy in the building, and loud when it has a large number of people talking due to limited amount of space. It would be five stars if the fella at the counter hadn't forgotten my order and I had to check in 30 minutes later. But I was deep in the zone upstairs in the bearskin rug room, jamming to my tunes in noise cancelling headphones. I could have checked earlier. If I'd been hungrier I would have. Sometimes I can be a bit of an ass. I have to admit that on my first visit to Symposium, I was rolling my eyes at what I perceived to be Symposium's attempt at replicating a high end Portland coffee house (ala Barista, Stumptown, etc.). It was as if I was saying, "Sherwood, you can't have nice things." And as a huge supporter of the smaller places and 'burbs outside of Portland, I recognize I needed an attitude adjustment. So after a few more visits, consider me a fan. And, yes, Sherwood, you do deserve nice things. I will say that as a customer you will pay for the high end product and atmosphere. There are other less expensive coffee shops and drive-thrus in town, but it is nice to have variety. There is nothing like this in Wilsonville, Tualatin or West Linn, so bully for Sherwood. Symposium serves Stumptown Coffee and Steven Smith Teas. During the summer, I also had some of their refreshing seasonal lemonade and there is also a nice selection of pastries, including gluten-free options. Symposium is located in Old Town Sherwood in a renovated 1910 Bungalow and one of its strengths is multiple seating areas. My experience improved as I explored the back room (love the lighting fixture) and the upstairs areas. So, it would be a very good place if you are meeting with a group. You can reserve a room for free through their website. There is also some outdoor seating when the weather cooperates. I will say my service has only been so-so on all occasions. Either because they appeared to be training staff or they just seemed to be so precise in their preparations that everything takes a fair amount of time. Based on price and limited food and beverage options, this isn't the place I take my boys. They have other favorites in the area. read more

I do thoroughly enjoy Symposium and spend a fair bit of time working, studying, and socializing here. I love their environment, appreciate recent upgrades in their facilities through expansion and/or better use of space, and they continue to have reliably good baristas, coffee, and sandwiches. Although, I'm a little heart-broken and struggling with a recent change which may significantly reduce the frequency of my visits and subsequently caused me to reduce my original high praise for this establishment down to three stars instead of continuing with a higher rating. I'm hoping this is just a temporary position. Symposium recently stopped carrying the awesome pastry selection provided by local bakery, La Provence, in an effort to produce their own baked goods in-house and presumably improve cost management, which I fully support. Unfortunately, they appear to have significantly reduced pastry options and portions, as well as going in an overly trendy direction of trying to specialize almost exclusively in gluten-free/vegan pastries (bagels appear to be the only gluten item remaining). While I appreciate and support businesses trying to accommodate more of a broad range of guests, Symposium has shifted from serving the many toward serving an arguably more narrow market while alienating the rest of us by eliminating products that were widely enjoyed without a similar replacement. I would be less alarmed and frustrated by this transition if they had decided to eliminate using outside suppliers but maintained the existing menu by creating similar pastries in-house while complimenting the pastry menu with the new gluten-free/vegan options. Consumers can enjoy Stumptown as well as Flag & Wire coffee at several coffee shops throughout the region. The environment that Symposium offers is quite enjoyable, especially for the Sherwood and Tigard demographic, but not particularly unique in the grand scheme of West-Portland coffeeshops. Their quality and selection of pastries from La Provence combined with the environment and coffee is what really set Symposium apart from the competition. I would feel better about continuing to regularly support Symposium if through this transition they decided to rebalance their menu with comparable replacements to the items we lost, namely croissant options and coffee cake. It would be awesome and greatly appreciated if they decided to bake their own croissant varieties and coffee cake in-house so that those of us who frequently enjoy those items don't feel like we're forced to go somewhere else since they're no longer available. read more

Been a few times, probably won't visit again. It's a pretty little building with plenty of indoor seating and a nice outdoor area but the coffee is so-so and the service a little lacking. The barista spilled my coffee over my arm the first visit, no big deal as accidents happen. A couple of follow up visits and the service continued to be mediocre and the coffee ok. There's plenty of seating indoor and they have a Sun Room in the back of the cafe. They serve Stumptown Coffee so their coffee here is really good. The service is also excellent. We sat outside and had a really nice time. I overheard someone else saying they had driven up from Salem just to come here.
