Just moved into the neighborhood and saw this will passing by so I had to try. Phone ordered a shrimp and broccoli lunch special and it was ready in 10 minutes. The actual pick up area itself is simple and not very well lit. But it's a takeout only place so I was in and out very quickly, so it barely mattered. Steaming HOT. Also surprisingly good for Chinese takeout, which is admittedly a low bar to begin with, but I think great. Portion is solid, and the price is not elevated to exceed it. Only one dish in and it's good, but I have to come back and try something that is more aligned with the "Szechuan" in the restaurant name. But for now, a good experience here for Chinese takeout in a surprising spot. read more

This is my go to for Chinese takeout. The food is always fresh, not too greasy and good flavor. Service is good - usually a wait between 15 and 20 mins; prices are good too. This Chinese food is by far the best in take out in philly. Most of the places in Philly go to have heavy MSG and leave me with a sodium hangover. The flavor is low sodium and has real flavor. This place is awesome. I'm a vegetarian, and while their menu doesn't seem to have a huge vegetarian selection, they're actually very accommodating. If you ask them, they'll make pretty much anything you want with tofu instead of with meat (General Tso's Tofu, for example). I absolutely love their Homestyle Tofu (ask them to make it a little spicy and it's perfect!), Mooshu Vegetable, and their sauteed string beans, which they saute with lots of garlic and deliciousness! Not fresh. I had been here years ago and it was a decent place with decent food. Not remarkable, but good. It is drastically different now. Ordered a chicken fried rice. The chicken was huge shreds of dry meat that looked like it had been cooked days ago and reheated. The rice tasted old and the whole dish was a brown color. No egg, bean sprouts or peas. Just old chicken and old rice. The beef and brocolli was passable. The brown rice that I ordered with it was not the fluffy brown rice that I expect to get, but was also old and dry. Skip this place. This place is a close walk from my work and the go to Chinese place for my office. Quick service for pick up and the food is always hot and ready when you get there. Not more than a 10 minute wait. What's different about this place is two unusual Chinese dishes but very crowd pleasing. Tai Chin which I got on this visit. Basically small crispy balls of battered chicken in a spicy general tsos like sauce. Basically their version of general tsos comes with a piece or two of broccoli. I order mine extra extra spicy. Then there is Chi Yang which is similar and also spicy but instead of a skimpy broccoli accompaniment there is sliced celery and peppers. The pork fried rice is fairly standard and the prices for lunch combos are reasonable. Better than the place across the street. read more

So while in Philadelphia for a month for work I have been keeping close to the place I'm staying at not wanting to fight traffic. So I found this little place and was really surprised how good the food is here. Let me explain that in Virginia where I am from we have some of the absolute worst Chinese food the world has to offer so this really was an extremely pleasant surprise. I had the chicken with garlic sauce and it had a good hot spicy flavor to it. The egg roll was good I've had better and worse. What I really like was getting brown rice. Back home it's fried or white I always prefer brown. I will check it out again before leaving. read more

Everything I've tried from there has been excellent and far exceeds other Chinese takeout joints in the area. It's worth the short drive over into Bala Cynwyd when I'm craving Chinese food. Good local American Chinese food. No delivery and no place to eat inside so it's solely a pickup spot but they do accept credit card. After moving from NYC, I really missed a good General Tso Chicken where the chicken is juicy and the sauce is a good mix of tangy and sweet. Szechuan Express is [literally] a hidden gem in Bala Cynwyd (the entrance is not found alongside all the other storefronts; it's tucked away in an alleyway around the middle of the shopping center). It is a little pricier than your average Chinese take-out, but it's worth it for the quality. For starters: you'll actually find white meat inside when you bite into a general tso chicken / sesame chicken / etc. The portion of food that they give is also fair. I ordered a spicy shrimp and broccoli with brown sauce and brown rice (typically comes with white sauce, per menu), she ordered a shrimp lo mein. As I unloaded the contents onto a plate and took my first bite, I realized that it was not the standard takeout fare. Someone put some effort into the brown sauce! Tasted the usual soy but with notes of ginger and the "spicy" actually produced a pleasant hum on my tastebuds without being overpowering - yum! My mom was equally pleased with her lo mein. The 5 stars is in comparison to other hole in the wall takeout Chinese restaurants. This is a tiny place, almost literally a hole in the wall, and very easy to miss. It's tucked away in an alley between Olive Garden and the Acme supermarket. The little vestibule where you order your food and wait is bright and clean, with a small television to keep you entertained. The woman at the counter was friendly and polite, and the food was prepared relatively quickly. It is Chinese-American food, but at a higher level of quality than your average corner place. I ordered General Tso's Chicken but was given General Tso's Shrimp instead--the only misfire, and I like shrimp anyway so, no harm, no fowl (heh). But I would recommend that you check your order before you leave, just in case. I also ordered Broccoli with Garlic Sauce, which isn't on the menu, but they were happy to make it for me. Both dishes were fresh, slightly spicy, and savory with shallots and szechuan chilis. The General Tso's sauce in particular was a far cry from the sickly sweet syrup all too common at other fast food Chinese places. It had a complex, rich flavor that complemented the fresh sweetness of the shrimp. The prices are fair, although I think some of the vegetable dishes are a tad overpriced. But all in all, I think Szechuan Express has good value for money, and I would come back the next time I'm craving some Chinese-American comfort food. read more

I saved their number in my contacts, so that should explain something, right? And thanks to fellow Yelpers, I was able to find it easily on the side of Acme... otherwise, I would have been lost. Lunch specials are good and proportionate. The prices of the lunch specials are okay, although it could be so much better, in my opinion, if they include a choice of soup or something else. Like I mentioned in my previous review of New China, the lunch specials there are cheaper AND have soup or egg roll. But I still prefer Szechuan Express over New China. I haven't even tried anything else around the Bala Cynwyd area yet since Szechuan Express has been on repeat. I've tried the Shrimp with Lobster sauce (even though I know it's not really lobster sauce... I mean, come on), Spicy Chicken and Broccoli, Tai Chin Chicken, and the homemade sweet tea. My favorite so far is the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, oddly. If you like shrimp and have the same taste as mine, you should try the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. As for the others, it was just A-OK. Spicy Chicken and Broccoli and Tai Chin Chicken weren't oily and had a kick to it, but aren't my cup of tea. Tai Chin Chicken was surely a better version of General Tsao's Chicken, but if I were to order it again, I'll ask for less sauce. Not sure if it was the sauce or the combination of that meal and their homemade sweet tea, but I was about to knock myself out at work shortly after. I only recommend their homemade sweet tea if you like to drink heaps and heaps of sugar and/or if you are able to pass out after. I'm still in a food coma as I write this and my heart is beating super fast. Szechuan Express will be in rotation, for sure, when I don't bring lunch or am not in the mood for trying other foods in the area. For the next visits, I will just stick to Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and others that are light or have "white sauce" instead of "brown sauce." No more homemade sweet tea for me. I was here yesterday and had the most enjoyable Chinese food ever. Their lunch specials are the best that I've had in a long time. One would think that Philadelphia being a very popular metropolitan city would have a lot of options for quick Chinese food. But no, I'd pretty much given up until I came by these guys. The food was spicy just to my liking and it was very delicious. Mind you, I had already had breakfast. So there are no hunger pangs associated with my review of the food here. Absolutely terrific. I'm a native Brooklyn girl so I'll admit I'm particular about my Chinese food. I was excited when I saw the high ratings given to this place and it being close to home made it a bigger plus. The prices are slightly higher than your neighborhood store but I guess that's to account for it being on the "Main Line". That being said I expected better than burnt to a crisp food when I open my container, this was not made better by them happily eating their own lunch/dinner when I arrived to pick up my food. And I don't mean slightly overdone I mean blackened, and inedible. I would have fed it to my dogs but I feared for their teeth. Add to that they got my order wrong, stating "You only said 1". I would have doubted myself if I was not with others when I placed my phone order. Again I assume they were too busy cooking their own food to pay attention to my order. Since this is takeout-only, hiding down the alley between Acme and Olive Garden, you'd probably never notice this place, let alone think the food would be any good. Well, take the chance, because the unassuming Szechuan Express serves up my favorite Chinese food in the Main Line area. They have the typical huge menu (no ho fun though, which would be a welcome addition) and I don't think I've been too disappointed with anything. I have driven up from Delaware just for their beef with Peking sauce - that's love. I'm also a fan of the [your choice of protein] with Szechuan sauce. The yu-shiang sauce is scorching hot. Yummy egg rolls too. I hope someday these guys can expand into a sit-down space, because the food is definitely good enough to support it. If you're in the area, give them a try sometime!
