The place itself is very easy to miss, stuck between the Acme and Olive Garden on City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd. There really isn't a whole lot to say, it's a good place to get cheap Chinese take-out if you're in the area. I get lunch there maybe once every two weeks. If you're looking for some food of higher quality (and also higher cost) you can head over to Shangri-La on Montgomery Ave. But, while they do take-out, it's also more of a Chinese-Japanese fusion place that has a teppanyaki grill and sushi bar as well. Great food. They are not open on Sunday which has always struck me as odd but I guess when you have offer a solid product you can afford to not be open on the weekend. The thing that I like the most about this place is that the texture of the chicken and beef are genuine-- no guessing what mystery meet it could be. It's located on the side of Acme kinda creepy but whatever the food is worth a slightly dark alley. Me and wifey ordered the chicken and broccoli platter and we both were not disappointed. This place is a hidden gem for Sure. Sits hidden in a shopping plaza but don't be deterred! From what I've heard what makes he place so great is everything from sauces to dumplings and even the breading on the general Tso is homemade. I love spicy, so their homemade spicy sauce is a must, and their ribs are great. In addition to the standard Chinese takeout fare, Szechuan Express lives up to its name of having dishes that are spicer with heavier use of Sichuan peppers and a bit garlicky. Both of which I like. I noticed that they do go more American spicy than Asian spicy in their scale, i.e. Asian spicy being something like Han Dynasty spicy. So if you want some heat, make sure to order extra, extra spicy. For a place like this, you really should try a variety of dishes and pick and chose your favorites after trying it rather than let someone tell you what to order. Ordered here for the first time based on the good reviews. I Called to pick up an order (lo mein and spring rolls). When I came in to pick up my order no one was at the counter. There was a door that connected to the kitchen. I could hear people in there. I yelled hello several times and rang the bell on the counter and still no one came out to help me. I grew tired of waiting and decided to call the restaurant on my cell. A lady walks out looking annoyed, picked up the phone and I had to explain to her it was me trying to get her attention. Everything honestly tasted fresh out of the freezer. This is most certainly a 4.5, instead of 4.0 out of 5. My boyfriend and I debated between giving it this rating versus a full 5 because our meals were DELICIOUS! We both got the Chi Yang Chicken combo platters and the chicken, rice, and pieces of broccoli in the dish were all so good!! The reason for the -0.5 from the rating is because the egg rolls weren't as good and neither was the Won Ton soup. Szechuan Express has by far the best Chinese in the area. It crushes Chun Hing, and it's way cheaper (and better than Shangri-La). We get take-out from from this place on a regular basis, and it's always fantastic. It's not your standard, hole-in-the-wall Chinese takeout place. It's way better than that. I recommend the following in no particular order: Shrimp with string beans, Uncle Chang's Special, Chicken and Spinach dumplings (steamed...they're not on the menu. ask), Four Seasons, and House Special Soup. I joke with my family that they should get a Michelin star....but sometimes I think I'm not joking. I love this place. read more
