A slice of American history to behold if you are motoring on AZ State Road 89 thru Yarnell and Peeples Valley. This cafe is a small, retro delight. No liquor is served but we started with a steaming hot latte and hot chocolate. The pizzas are hand-tossed and baked in a wood-fired oven. The Big Al's Deluxe American-Style pizza was very tasty and included their own fresh, savory sausage. Our guests enjoyed their Maui Wowie Hawaiian pizza. The menu also includes wings, salads, and sandwiches. The food is fresh, the vibe is unique, and our server, Ember, was very friendly. This place is truly incredible. My Grandparents live nearby in Peeples Valley. I was in town visiting for 4 days and are here twice during that time, because it's the kind of food you have once and crave it, as a matter of fact I'm craving it now.. too bad I'm a 13 hour drive away! The garlic twists are to die for. Hands down my favorite item I tried. Their pizza is fantastic. Delicious flavor.. the crust isn't too thick and doughey and it's not too greasy either which is a major plus in my book. The pizza sauce is fantastic and not in a way that overpowers the rest of the pizza. I also had their house salad, which was also incredible with just the right toppings. Great food, usually good service. BUT LOOK FOR AN ADDED CONVENIENCE FEE. Added to our bill. I asked what it was for after my husband paid the bill. I was told its for credit card usage. But we paid cash. I asked for it to b refunded to me. Unfortunately the server was rude and snarky. She said " well your husband didn't mind".... she then handed me my money and said " just take your money and leave"..... if the owner sees this...we are local and often bring large groups for lunch. Man was this place a surprise. My friend raved about it so when we were passing through we stopped. The outside of this place was unassuming to say the least. Same could be said for the inside. But let me tell you what I ate here was some of the most delicious food. They have a wood fired oven to cook their pizzas! I ate breadsticks and marinara, chicken wings, pizza. All of it was just so good. My leftovers were consumed in the car before we made it back to town. I can't wait to find an excuse to go up there again. read more

I called to order a pizza to go a few days ago. And my experience was mixed. Overall, the pizza was good, but average, equal to a pizza hut. The pizza was a large with cheese and pepperoni. It was hot upon pick up. The crust was okay and a little on the soft side for being wood fired oven, but acceptable. The amount of toppings seemed fresh and the amount was adequate or average, but it would have been better with more. The sauce I thought was better than average, with a bit of sweetness. Based on the pizza alone, I most likely would have given it a 4 stars here on Yelp, and maybe come back, but there a couple of things that will keep me from ever coming back to this restaurant again or recommending it to anyone. Here are my main reasons. 1) Pizza size - For the largest pizza on the menu, it seemed small, especially for the price. 2) Price - Keep in mind that this was the cheapest pizza on the menu, so a basic cheese pizza with one topping, on the smaller side for $17. Most of the common pizzas they offer are in the $22-25. Better plan on $50-60 for a family of 4.If it had been a great pizza on the larger side, I still would have thought that was high, but worth a splurge every now and then. 3) Rudeness - Lady was rude and short on the phone and in person. Seemed like it was an inconvenience just to be a customer. Come on Yarnell, that is not how you treat customers when you are trying to grow the community. I really wanted to like this place, because it is a small town and I know it is tough for small businesses, but I think the prices are geared towards the tourists and the food, although good, does not justify the price. Add on top of that the attitude towards customers, I can live without it. read more

The remainder of the menu is salads, an antipasto plate, oven baked wings, and italian sandwiches. They use quality, local ingredients for their food and it shows...simple dishes take on fantastic flavor. Service is friendly and very informal, prices are a little higher than you might expect but not outrageous, and in our opinion it was worth it. Stopped for dinner on our way from Prescott to Phoenix. Wonderful meal - my husband and I each had a side salad, shared a 12 inch pizza Margherita and 8 wings in the hot sauce. Best pizza I've ever had - everything was so fresh; perfect home made crust that was both chewy and crisp on the edges and lots of fresh basil and vine ripe tomatoes under the bubbling cheese. Flavor gobsmacked me. Wings were great as was the salad. Cozy and quaint too with very friendly and efficient service. And great local art on the walls - I even bought a painting! We took a random route to Prescott, passed through Peeples Valley and found this gem. This may become our preferred way to go so we can stop. Sandwiches were the perfect size. The fennel sausage was amazing - just enough fennel. My husband and I split the fennel sausage sandwich and meatball sandwich. Delicious! Handmade sausage and the scratch rolls were soft and fluffy. Stopped by today, while driving through town. We had a Maui Wowie, and it was delicious. They make their own dough here, and you can taste the freshness. Great wood-burning oven pizza. Best thin crust pizza we have had in quite a while. Best salad around. Best bleu cheese dressing, too. But, be warned: The Old World pizza uses marinated artichoke hearts, which give the pizza a vinegar flavor. That may be good or bad for you, depending on whether you like vinegar-flavored pizza. If you don't want vinegar, it is a great pizza if you ask them to leave off the artichokes. Big Al's is popular, and is very good if you like lots of ingredients. Their simpler pizzas really come into their own. Their "Marguerite" pizza really shines, with each ingredient complimenting the others. Great sandwiches, as well. About the only weak spot is the lame tomatoes they buy. It is definitely worth the drive to get such a great pizza. Or make it part of a trip. read more

On my bicycle ride I happened upon the Thunderbird Cafe. Nestled in the beautiful Peeples Valley, it is a crown jewel. The wood fired pizza oven was fired up in the smell of fresh baked pizza filled the air. Bread sticks - owner switched from garlic butter to olive oil which ruined the wonderful taste they had before.
