Really, really good tavern pie, although I wouldn't necessarily call it a traditional tavern pizza. When I think tavern, I think crackery crust. That is not this. The caramelized ring of cheese around the edge is brilliant. The bottom was a hair undercooked and therefore a little limp but not too bad. One other reason for the limp is the very generous amount of cheese that solidifies into a shield atop the pizza. The sauce is a tad sweet but not too bad. 8/14/25 - Went to a pizza shop today that I have never tried. I am not sure how I never ate here considering that I've driven passed this place a thousand times taking Alex to and from dance class. TJ's Pizza and Catering is located in Parlin, NJ. I went in with the intention of ordering a large plain and a large Sicilian. But there's a sign on the wall that refers to this place as the home of the Tavern Pie. Tavern Pie? What in the world is that? Never saw that anywhere on Staten Island when I was growing up. But if that's your specialty, scratch off the Sicilian and add one Tavern Pie. The good: The plain pie was wonderful. It's the neopolitan style we all grew up eating. When I opened the box, the aroma immediately brought me back to Al's Pizza on Jewett Ave in Staten Island. I knew I was going to like it. And it didn't disappoint. The flavor of the sauce explodes in your mouth on the very first bite. The crust was pretty good too... crunchy and very little limpness. The cheese is very flavorful. And its real cheese with flavor.... not the cheap version. The foot traffic in this place is incredible. It took about 20 minutes to cook the pies and in that time, I easily saw 25 people coming in. The staff is super friendly kick-starting conversations about football with the majority of the people that came in. And to their credit, they knew everyone's names! In my mind, this definitely speaks to them having a loyal customer base. The bad: I was not a big fan of the Tavern Pie. As I am learning, Tavern Pie is a very thin crust pie cooked well. TJ's version isn't terrible, but it's not one that I'd run to buy again. The sauce wasn't as flavorful and all that cooking took the flavor out of the cheese. Not sure why it wasn't as flavorful overall if it's the same ingredients just cooked longer. Maybe this your thing? It's nice to try but its not for me. I would give no stars if I could. I live in Parlin And it's so hard to find a good pizzeria. So I decided to give TJ's a chance. I ordered the quote in quote Famous Tavern Pie with sausage. First of all I barely saw any sausage on the pizza. Then I took a bite, that was the most disgusting pizza I ever had. 20 bucks down the drain because I had it delivered. I will never eat from there again. I wish I could have returned it. I used to live in West Orange and if you want a good Tavern Pie go to Star Tavern they are the best. This was the first take out we ordered in the area on a whim and I am glad we started strong with TJs. We ordered a little of everything: small plain pizza, pork roll sub, french fries, and penne ala vodka. The pizza had good flavor and definitely holds up. I personally ask for pizzas a little well done so it's crispier (and after this round, I will probably do the same when ordering again). My fiance really enjoyed his pork roll sub (though he thought the bread could be a little better but it may have been one-off). The penne was tasty, but I would probably put some parm and hot flakes on as a personal preference. Based on first impression, I'd give 3 stars. Ordered a large pizza, a slice of tavern pie, and garlic knots. The pizza was ok, nothing special about it. The knots tasted like oil and were firm. Since the tavern slice was great, we ordered a second time the next week. We got the tavern pie, which was delish (is there sugar added??) and a Caesar salad. It's a vinaigrette based dressing vs creamy and was very good. It was a little overdressed - but still very good. Decided to try this pizza place as we haven't had luck with our other 2 goto's as of late. As suggested by some other reviewers we ordered the tavern pie and also went for the fried broccoli appetizer. We had no idea what a tavern pie and there wasn't any description so it was merely a choice based on suggestions and photos. The pizza wasn't really anything special and honestly if I could compare it to something I would say it taste just like if you've attempted to make pizza at home with limited ingredients. Like if you took a can of Ragu pasta sauce spread it on a pre-made bobili dough and sprinkled cheese on it. Sauce was too sweet and the size of the pie was somewhat small, the entire pizza was under filling because it was very thin. Could have been better if it was crispier, personally wouldn't recommend anyone getting this. Still shocked how so many other people talk so highly of this pie. Not everything was negative about the order, the fried broccoli appetizer was awesome and we would get that again. The odd part was the online description wasn't the same of what was actually in the app but regardless it was good. We usually order take out from TJs Pizzeria for those "end of the week too tire to cook Fridays" or on "lazy Sundays"... We have always been satisfied with their customer service and prompt delivery. Among the various dishes we have enjoyed are Buffalo Chicken Wings, Garlic Knots, Mussels, and our son loves their Shrimp Basket appetizer. During the summer we like to pair a salad with pizza, our favorites from here are either Antipasto or Italian Salad accompanied by plain Tavern Pizza; yummy good!! I pass by this place on my drive home almost every night, so I finally caved and went in. I was pleasantly surprised on a Tuesday by the window selection. I did a thin crust plain, 2 buffalo chicken, 1 thin crust vodka square slice, and a pepperoni. Wife really liked the thin crust and vodka slices. I had a bite of the vodka and loved the sauce. The regular slices had a nice crunch, thick enough crust to just barely hold the toppings and stay straight, and really tasty toppings. First and last time ever ordering here. Just moved to this side of Old Bridge and decided to try out TJ's for the first time after coming across them in the Grub Hub app. Ordering was pretty simple through the app. Timing was almost on the money too when the guy arrived. No problems there. We ordered a TJ's Fat Kat sub. After opening it, the smell was a little funny. After a little closer inspection, I could see the chicken was not cooked correctly at all. It was still pink and hard as rubber!! I could not even pull it apart with my hands! I immediately called the restaurant and spoke to the manager. To his surprise, he apologized. I requested a refund but he told me since I ordered from Grub Hub, I had to contact them and there is nothing he could do. I figured that was somewhat true but he immediately followed up by saying he would send out another sandwich immediately for the trouble. I proceeded to say thank you and we will see you shortly. Delivery man never arrived. We waited over an hour. After that, I contacted Grub Hub to get my refund. They processed it within minutes. Overall, VERY DISSATISFIED by the quality and service of TJ's. Went there years ago before they moved and closed down for years...THEN it was great. Now - I'm not a fan. I used to work within walking distance and occasionally we would get it for the whole office. It was ok....i started to think it was ok. Stopped in the other night......and it was SO bad I threw it out after 3 bites. It had an awful aftertaste (chemical like)...it was a plain slice.
