Taang! Dang. This record store got a lotta stuff in it. It's one of those record stores where you feel like you're hunting and pecking, because things are kind of all cramped and somewhat all over the place. Although, there is a rhyme and reason to things, and you realize this once you're in the space for a bit. They have a lot of band t-shirts, which they hang overhead and you need to have your arms raised for an extended period of time to look through them. Taang also sells DVDs, VHS, CDs, cassettes, laser discs (what?) and record players. Of course, they also sell lots and lots of albums. I saw a lot of hip-hop records, which was cool because that genre is somewhat neglected when it comes to vinyl. This record store is small, but they have a lot of great things. Cool spot to check out some records. Well organized with today's hits and yesterday's favorites. Great service. Street parking is limited. The chase park in lot requires a paid meter 0-3 hrs is $10. Very much over priced indeed. New records all seem to be $39, while most other stores charge between $25 and $30 for the same. They do have a lot of older rock/pop, including special editions. But many of them are close to $100 or more. read more

Dirty, unorganized, extremely high unreasonable prices even for the most generic common items, staff was not helpful, musty crusty environment. This tiny store is packed. Felt like an antique mall with the narrow passages completely overrun with stuff. We didn't buy anything during our visit, but enjoyed stopping in to look around. This store had a little bit of everything for the nostalgic music lover. I don't remember the last time I saw so many cassette tapes and VHS tapes. Wasn't looking for anything specific- just browsing so I can't comment on staff or availability. I'll definitely come back to check out this spot if I'm looking for a gift or if I get into records or another nostalgic hobby one day. read more

So they've got an employee who is super kind and helpful, and some older dude that walks around berates his employee in front of all his customers about them not organizing records quickly and efficiently enough. Something about "metal is so easy it can be done in 10 minutes." Taang! Had/has some good bands, and their selection is pretty good, but holy crap their prices are absolutely nuts. $40 is the average price for a new record. They have a good selection... but the prices here are straight up outrageous. And the layout of the place is an absolute mess. It's just so poorly organized, cramped, and honestly it's just generally unpleasant if you're a vinyl collector that likes to dig through the piles. In SD we are kind of blessed to have many great vinyl stores, so there's definitely better places you can go. But they do have a good selection, so they get more than 1 star read more

Do not shop here. Genuinely the most stupid and ridiculously overpriced record shop I've ever been to. Tried to sell me a BOOTLEG/ UNOFFICIAL copy of Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange" for $60. BOOTLEG. And they tried to convince me that it was 'limited deluxe edition'. Also looked at Dr. Dre's 2001 (widely available album on black LP) for a whopping $90. They have no idea what they're doing, and have never bothered to look anywhere like discogs or anything to see how out of range their pricing is. Taang has a pretty good selection for punk, especially Oi! Type music. My favorite part of the store is the cd section, it was a lil section of a bunch of old school punk cds. The only times I'll be going there will be to get more cds for my collection. (Did I mention cds? Lol) when I went there the lady worker up front was pretty nice, I was expecting a more jerkier employee since that's what I've heard about a lot, how the employees, especially the owner (the bald guy) are dicks. Personally what I think: if your looking for some good old school punk cds then go there. Pricing was pretty rough. The cds are kinda cheap (10 - 19 dollars) the albums they had there were pretty good but those were pretty damn expensive. I drove from Kentucky all the way to California to go there and it was so fuckin worth it. way better than the derby .And the one with cute green hair helped me find some awesome records. Odd selections, disorganized shelves and FANTASTIC! This was the fourth record store I hit and the one of two that actually had rare finds. The disorganization kept me engaged in finding the treasure that I walked out with. The counter guy was relatively uninvolved, asking if I needed help well after I was there and in a non-intrusive manner that was appreciated. He later gave me a record shipping box to protect what I had purchased. The place was low pressure and chill. read more

What a GREAT non-stereotypical record shop experience. I didn't even know 100% for certain if the Twenty-one Pilots released on vinyl so I called Taang! and they said hells yeah. They just needed to order it. Which they did. Then they contacted me to let me know they should have a shipping# the following day. Today I was able to get my record (for my daughter). They even told me another album of theirs that will be available on vinyl soon. Very knowledgeable and that means a lot to me. I can't vouch for others - I like 80's and 90's era Punk and Alternative, something Taang! has plenty of. New and Used - Multiple formats. I've been helped by Jen and found her to be polite and very helpful. This isn't a Barnes and Nobel or Urban Outfitters - it has tons stuff you just need to look or ask for a hand. I have been a customer at Taang records for years. It's always very well stocked with one of a kind collectibles and a hidden gem. The owner and staff are very kind to talk to about music, especially if you want to expand your music tastes. It's my favorite record store and I love the 2 dollar crates! Super rude staff on May 31st. We had walked in and greeted the staff near the front door, he stared at us and said nothing else (first red flag). The whole place needs a revamp, super messy and unorganized. It was very difficult to find an organization pattern, once you found it, it would change again, making record shopping a not so fun experience (second red flag). I have been to an even smaller and more packed record store, yet had a much easier time browsing there then at Taang! Records. My boyfriend and I had given up on looking so we were going to leave and that's when the employee working at the front desk finally decided to say something to us, asking us what we were looking for. We had told him we were looking for Hardcore albums. He instantly started to get snippy, asking us if we were looking for 1st wave or second wave, which we didn't understand what that meant (sue us, lol) so we asked. Employee took a deep sigh and sort of explained it with arrogance, then asked us if we were looking for New Wave or Modern, to which we answered with "Modern". This obviously bothered the employee because he rolled his eyes and said "You won't find THAT here. Only 1st Generation and Second Generation" (third red flag). No need to start being a music elitist with customers because you do not like Modern Hardcore. read more

Placed a $141.55 order for multiple cds and 7" records from them with no response whatsoever. After about a week I emailed them (no response), After about 2 weeks I called them (No Answer and voicemail doesnt allow you to leave a message because its full). After this, I messaged them via their Facebook page and they read my messages immediately yet continued to ignore me. I then left a similar review on their Facebook page but they deleted it immediately. Funny they have time to read my messages and delete my reviews but no time to ship the order I paid for or reply to my messages. Apparently they think its cool to steal from people and ignore them when they ask where their stuff is. read more

One of several stores I checked out while in town. To their credit, they had a lot of interesting pieces, particularly on their walls. But pricing.....holy smokes.... significant deterrent to buying anything. This didn't just apply to the rare or highly sought after pieces, but their regular bins too. Condition was hit/miss on what I saw in the bins, particularly priced as they were. To their credit, their punk selection was versatile, and they did offer cheaper bins ($5 & $10) to look through, but I saw several items in there that would be in the dollar bins in other stores I've seen across the country. As another reviewer noted, the way the bins are organized goes left to right all the way across (like a typewriter), then starts again back to the left - a first for me. Additionally, the $5/$10 bins were not easy to look through because they were higher than elbow-level height. Other reviewers also noted the strict "no camera or photo" policy. Makes it hard to check prices or pressings on Discogs. Not sure what that deal is. Since Record City was nearby, this store is worth checking out too. Parking is a bear in this area, so plan accordingly. read more

On behalf of a friend. I experienced something super disheartening today! So, I know a lot about music, and records. During my job hunt today I decided to walk into TAANG! Records to see if they were hiring (mom showed me on online ad so I figured I'd visit to confirm if it's legitimate.) I walk in and wait for some guy's attention. He's behind the counter laughing, living it up with some dudes who were browsing the store. He seemed really nice from afar. As soon as I get his attention, I smile and ask if they're hiring. He stares me down a bit. It takes him a few seconds to reply. "Maybe...," he says sarcastically. He looks as me like I'm fucking joking here. "I'll be with you in a sec.." He then goes back to being all fucking bouncy and enthusiastic with the other customers. He engages more into the conversation in a way that CLEARLY indicates he's trying to make it laaaaaast, if you dig. I don't understand why he was so monotone yet clearly sarcastic and rude to me? It made me feel super insecure and awkward. Spoiler alert, he never got back to me. I wandered and browsed the store but left after like 10 minutes of being ignored. He was suspiciously VERY enthusiastic and happy-go-lucky with those dudes, and I received a completely different vibe. Granted, he was doing his job, communicating and bonding with customers, but who reacts like that to a potential hire? As far as I'm concerned at that's point I was a potential CUSTOMER, but not anymore. Fuck that place. It's one thing to engage in conversation because, ya know, fuck it. But he was catering hella to them and the energy was 100% intentional stalling. And not to turn it into a gender thing, but I'm gonna turn it into a gender thing, something to consider: I was the ONLY woman present. All the men were talking, laughing, living it up. And then as soon as the pretty girl with the long velvet skirt and the lipstick walks in, the mood changes and I am treated poorly? I would've loved to engaged in a nice conversation about Rush (because surprise surprise, this 20 year old woman is a Rush super fan. I have the fucking Fly By Night owl tattooed on my fucking neck. Aaah, just a few symbols of the perfect candidate) but instead, he treated me as if I was JOKING about a job. You heard it here folks. TAANG! Records in Hillcrest can suck it. He was telling his employees to not let people browse around and just ask what they want and buy something. Worst experience ever. Cashier lady was rude. When I called to complain, the man who answered the phone did not identify himself, only after I asked for a manager or owner after sever times. He finally told me his name was Curtis and then laughed and did not believe our complaint. We simply hung up because he was just as rude as the cashier. Maybe they were both having a bad day or just hating the fact their store will soon be out of business due change in technology and the fact all their items were junk. An awesome record shop that does carry some rarities. Its a shame that they may have overpriced themselves. LPs should run $15-20 for a standard issue LP. I understand that special editions and rare vinyl is costly but it seemed to be the bulk of the shop. Not uncommon to have records in the $100+ range. Atmosphere: 1 out of 5 chili peppers. If you like the un organized dorm room look with junk on the floor and stacks of boxes littered everywhere then you have struck Gold my friends. That is what you get here. I really could get a sense of the organization either. There is a half hearted attempt at a alphabetized row but then you cant find the next letter in order. So weird. This place should be killing it but it has things needing some attention. Namely, the height as which you should look at albums...they should be about elbow level at its highest. These are at shoulder level and so it was a tad annoying to thumb through albums. Summary: A claustrophobic, unorganized and unfortunately overpriced vinyl shop. Walked in a few weeks ago and a young guy was so helpful and nice. Today, There was an older man, I'm assuming the owner, was very rude. He wasn't even paying attention when my friend was talking and wouldn't even look our way. He also said "I can't hear you" after responding to a few of our questions. Working in hospitality for years, i know that YOU are the employee, you should come closer if you can't hear us. The younger guy should be in charge as he had better communication skills and was very informative. Don't bother with this unorganized mess. M Theory or Record City down the street. read more
