The first time I ate here was good. Delicious. The second time was terrible. The food was cold and the portions were small and bland.

Everything started great, they even had my favorite beer Schmidtwick's. The food was delish and presented well. Our server was attentive and kind. The place was neat and clean, great for a mtg... The general manager came over and chitchatted with our table. I was the one who called the meeting, I chose the place via Yelp reviews. However, when the GM found out it was all three of our first time he proceeded to hand out his card. The guy that met me there was handed one, then my son who lives in Irvine was handed one. However, when I reached my hand out, he hesitated. I told him we don't live together (speaking of my son who was sitting next to me) and he started to hand it to me, but then pulled it back. He informed me it's in case we come back... funny, our topic of conversation that day was how hard it was for women growing up in my era and working their way up the ladder... how times have changed. Upon leaving, my guest laughed and said his wife would've gone ballistic at how the only woman at the table was treated. The GM appeared to look like we were the same age. I was quite insulted by his behavior. I hope something can be learned for my honest review. I did get a card, but I don't think I'll be back.

On the wine front, Gata absolutely delivers. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, and it's the kind of place where one glass quickly turns into two because there are simply too many interesting options to pass up. Unfortunately, the food didn't come close to matching either the quality of the wine program or the price point. We ordered the deviled eggs, which turned out to be hard-boiled eggs sliced in half with a piece of ham placed on top. When you order deviled eggs, you generally expect, well... the eggs to actually be deviled. We mentioned our disappointment to the bartender, who was wonderful, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable to talk with. The explanation was that this is simply their interpretation of deviled eggs. Fair enough, but it wasn't an interpretation that worked for us. Ironically, the standout dish of the evening was the pigs in blankets, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write about an upscale wine bar. They were delicious, but they also raised the question of why the rest of the menu wasn't reaching the same level. Looking back, we realized we were the only people actually eating while everyone else was there for the wine. In hindsight, that should have been the clue. I only wish someone had mentioned that before we made the trip over expecting a tapas experience. Gata has so much potential. The atmosphere is lovely, the wine selection is excellent, and the staff were fantastic. If the small plates eventually rise to the level of the wine program, this place could be truly special. Until then, I'd absolutely recommend it for drinks, but probably not for dinner.

My wife ordered Moscow Mule for her drink and a Charcuterie Box, it has Prosciutto, salami , aged cheddar, triple cream brie/berry jam , fresh berries, grapes, olives, nuts, and crackers. For my food, I tried their Italian Meatballs with a side of toasted bread . We also had Dragon Rolls , its deep fried beef rolls served with homemade sweet chilli lime sauce , this Dragon rolls were crispy and good . Good size of Charcuterie box. The meatballs are well seasoned and decent size of meatballs, I like that the Marinara on their meatballs only has a slight sourness. Also when we started eating, they started a Trivia game so that was nice. Good music, a nice vibe, and delicious food and nice staff

We ordered the beignets, Matcha Latte Tiramisu, Curry Hamburger, and the U.S. Fried Rice. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the standout was definitely the beignets! Our server was very friendly and checked in on us throughout our meal to make sure we had everything we needed. Thank you for the great service! The restaurant also has plenty of tables, making it a great spot for both small and larger groups. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in San Diego for brunch! P.S. The steak in the shakshuka was cooked well, and while I enjoyed my curry, it was a little sweeter than I expected. There were also a few flies inside since all the windows were open, but nothing too major. Parking is about what you'd expect for North Park--not impossible, but it can take some patience. Overall, I'd definitely come back. The food was enjoyable, the owners were wonderful, and I think this spot has a lot of potential as they continue to settle in.

I ordered the brussels sprouts and the paella, and both were outstanding. The brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly, crispy where they should be, with a sauce that I'm still thinking about. The paella? Let's just say I have zero regrets eating every last bite. Zero. But honestly, the food almost plays second fiddle to the owner, Julie. She was running the show (the front of the house) solo while I was there, managing the business and somehow still being the most attentive and present host I've encountered in a long time. She's warm, funny, completely down to earth, and had stories that made the whole meal feel like a dinner party rather than a restaurant visit. It's rare to meet a business owner so genuinely personable and connected to her guests. Tapas & Beers is a family-owned French and Spanish gem tucked into a historic downtown building, and it absolutely deserves your visit. If you're in San Diego and this is on your radar, stop hesitating and just go. You'll leave full, happy, and probably already planning your next trip back.

It's about as close to Madrid (other than Balboa Park) as you're going to get in the county of San Diego...especially if you sit down at Barra Oliba. I literally felt like I was in a café in Madrid or Barcelona and enjoyed not only the familiar salty flavors that I've missed from Spain, but also the pure, rich, olive oil, and quiet ambiance as this is one block from the busiest part of Little Italy. My server, German, (his name) enjoyed helping me create the ideal light supper and allowed me to try a few Spanish wines (they have so many!). I settled on a Verdejo from Rueda. It was the right balance of fruit, acid, and slight floral to perfectly pair to my meal. I had the seasonal fish meuniere - white fish delicious and crispy on top (my favorite), garnished with capers and roe. It was accompanied with a tender lettuce and heirloom tomato salad with saffron dressing. The leftover dressing for the salad was the most amazing vinegar dip for a couple tater tots when I got home. The dressing was something I will go back for! Thank you, Barra Oliba for the perfect Spanish "girl dinner!" Can't wait to come back and try the Paella!

A special thank you goes to our waiter, German, who did an outstanding job helping us navigate the menu. His recommendations were spot on, and thanks to his guidance we ended up ordering several excellent dishes that we might not have chosen on our own. His knowledge of the menu and genuine enthusiasm made the meal even more enjoyable. Some of our favorite dishes were the amazing patatas bravas, Jamon, the delicious croquettes of the day, and the flavorful beef tartare, which was outstanding. We also enjoyed the mushrooms and the sashimi selection, although the sashimi felt a bit sparse for the price. The only dish that missed the mark for us was the Iberico double-cut pork chop. While the sauce was absolutely delicious, the pork itself was very dry, which made it our least favorite dish of the evening. While it's not an inexpensive meal, the quality of the food, outstanding service, and welcoming atmosphere made it well worth the price. If you're looking for authentic Spanish cuisine in San Diego's Little Italy, Barra Oliba is absolutely worth a visit. We'll definitely be back.
