Really cute brunch place in North Park. I got the Pomelo salad to share and curry hamburg. Salad was refreshing. I enjoyed the curry hamburg, and it was a big portion that filled me up quick. We also shared the beignets and it came with black sesame/matcha dip. They were light and fluffy and paired well with the dips. Best eaten fresh as they cool down pretty quick. For drinks, I got the Matcha Tiramisu Latte and Matcha Yuzu Mimosa. The latte was more matcha. I didn't really taste any tiramisu in my drink, but the matcha was good. It definitely is on the low sweet. The mimosa was good as well. At first, wasn't sure if the flavor would pair well as a mimosa, but it was good! The matcha and yuzu blend well. Someone else had a yuzu mimosa, but it too sour for my taste. The yuzu with the matcha definitely helps reduce the citrus sour taste. Service was friendly and fast. Since it was a busy Sunday, they already explained in advance that food might take longer to come out, but it didn't feel very long. When I went, we had a live musician playing. Horrible waiting times. Avoid unless you want to wait 2.5 hrs for a full service. I came here with a friend at 10:30 and was told it would be a 30 minute wait. That's fine, okay. Put my name on the waitlist. I get seated at 11:20, a 50 minute wait. Even with that, I understand waiting times are estimates, so I was willing to overlook it. But then came the actual service. I want to preface this by saying our waiter, Jagger, was terrific! No issue there. The problem was with the waiting time for our food. Initially, our two drinks and single order of beignets came out fast. Great start. Then we placed our main order around 11:30; shakshuka and the US fried rice. I also placed a second order of beignets to-go. The to-go order came out pretty quickly, but that's one item I would have preferred to take time. I requested it be re-fired at the end of our meal so that it would retain its integrity as much as possible. That request was accommodated no problem. After that, we didn't get our main dishes until 12:30, a whopping hour later. Even still, I can understand the kitchen being backed up, shortstaffed, etc. What really gets me is that multiple parties that were seated AFTER us got their food BEFORE us. I even saw the party that was seated just before us come and go all while we were waiting on our dishes. That is completely unacceptable. On top of that, the second order of beignets took another 10 minutes after we paid around 12:40pm. At this point, I had lost all patience and was extremely close to cancelling the second order. What was intended to be a brunch quickly turned into an afternoon lunch. The pacing of the food also made it so that neither of us were particularly hungry by the time our plates came out, so we could not even fully enjoy the meal. Between Us has been on my list for the longest time. After finally trying it, my only regret is not coming sooner because everything we ordered was delicious. We walked in around 12:40 without a reservation. They close at 2:30, but we were still seated pretty quickly. Every employee we interacted with was genuinely friendly. The service never felt rushed even though we came close to close. I also had no idea we walked in during their "US Hour" from 12:00 to 2:30, so that ended up being a nice surprise. They offer $7 draft beers, $9 wine, $10 mimosas, plus a handful of bites for $9. We started with the Fried Calamari Tentacles from the US Hour menu. They're served with Japanese mayo, although it tasted like there was some citrus mixed in because it had a nice tangy kick. Whatever it was, it worked really well with the crispy calamari. To drink, I ordered the Yuzu Matcha Mimosa. It had a really vibrant green color that almost reminded me of green juice. I actually enjoyed it. The matcha flavor came through without getting lost. My friend wasn't the biggest fan because they thought it leaned a little too bitter, so I think this one depends on how much you already enjoy matcha. For my entree, I ordered the Duck and Waffles ($24), which comes with crispy duck confit, a waffle, passionfruit guava sauce, and chili crunch. This was easily the highlight of the meal. Everything here is phenomenal. Every time someone visits, I bring them here! There's quite a good amount of seating, but the best time to come is during the weekdays. A new brunch spot located in NP run by the young new owners of Thai Time across the street. "Between Us" is aptly named with some fusion, "in-between" offerings ranging from Curry Hamburg (Japanese), ube dips (Filipino), Duck Waffles (Chinese fusion), Latke Benedict (Jewish fusion), Beignets (Cajun) and Shakshuka (North African). We had the Beignets (5 for $12) to share, and I ordered the Curry Hamburg ($20), a Black Sesame Latte ($7) w/ a shot of Matcha (+$2), and a Matcha Yuzu Mimosa ($13) for myself. The beignets, perfectly shared between the 5 of us, were a bit too dense and possessed a weirdly hard outer crust. The matcha cream and black sesame mascarpone serving as dips made them a little more enjoyable. The black sesame latte was deliciously nutty, but the matcha shot at the $2 up charge was exorbitant. (Note: This is their only caffeine addition -- along with hojicha -- as they do not have an espresso machine). I was very disappointed in the Curry Hamburg, unfortunately. This was a failed attempt at omurice. The egg, while plentiful, was not even seasoned. Further, the equally unseasoned hamburger patty was very dry and the sauce over-salty. They should have distributed the salt and seasoning throughout the dish because it lacked serious balance. They just added beer and mimosas, so the Matcha Yuzu Mimosa, though overkill with the Matcha (and likely wasted), did ease the ache some. I made reservations online via OpenTable where I had to put a credit card down and agree to the seemingly shady policy regarding party changes within a 24 hour period. We were seated immediately, but they gave us a table with some weird wooden fold-up chairs. Our table was strangely the only one with these uncomfortable chairs. It was also excessively loud and we almost didn't learn the name of our server, who, by the way, was PHENOMENAL despite some of the disappointment with the food! We originally planned on going to Morning Glory for brunch but it was a 2 hour wait so we decided to come here instead. They also offered us all free orange juice. However, if they knew they were having issues with the kitchen then they should've told us earlier before we got seated so people could go elsewhere rather than waiting an hour for their food. Overall, service here was very poor. In terms of food, it was unfortunately pretty good but not worth the wait. I really liked the simple toast with matcha cream on top as well as the curry hamburg. My friend ordered the shakshuka (not pictured because it came last and everyone just wanted to eat at that point) which was also pretty good. Since it was their soft opening, I'm hoping things have gotten smoother since then. The food was good overall. Beignets were sooo good! The steak in the shakshuka was cooked well, and while I enjoyed my curry, it was a little sweeter than I expected. There were also a few flies inside since all the windows were open, but nothing too major. Parking is about what you'd expect for North Park--not impossible, but it can take some patience. I came her for brunch with a friend a few days ago, and we were feeling adventurous! While we usually opt for the sweet beignets, we instead went for the savory ones! I'm not usually a mushroom girlie, but I actually quite enjoyed the mushroom dip that they had, and I would recommend this if you, too, are feeling adventurous! They had matcha and hojicha lattes-- tried their black sesame latte with a hojicha shot and my bf had the tiramisú matcha latte. We had a reservation for 10 am on a Sunday and were seated once we arrived. It is super cute and aesthetic inside and surprisingly roomy with lots of tables. Service was quick and friendly and checked on us often. Our server brought us extra plates and bowls when we said we were gonna share our dishes which I thought was super thoughtful. -Beignets (5/5): came specifically for their popular beignets and they did not disappoint! They were hot, fresh, nicely soft and chewy. Paired with the matcha cream, it was delicious as the cream was nicely creamy and thick. I'm not the biggest fan of black sesame so it was nutty and just okay to me -Tiramisu latte (4/5): pretty good and strong as I could taste the matcha! Couldn't really taste the tiramisu and it needed more sweetness so we asked for extra simple syrup, pretty pricey for the size -Curry hamburg (4/5): very savory and meaty, the beef patty was thick and flavorful, the curry was well seasoned but had a little kick, the eggs were soft and fluffy -House potatoes (4/5): nicely crispy, a bit plain to me but was a nice balance to the savory curry hamburg When we left, there were lots of people waiting outside so I definitely recommend making a reservation. It wasn't too busy inside but there was a lot of people waiting outside when we left, so recommend making a reservation (I made it through Toast). After seeing all the great reviews, we had to try this place and it did not disappoint. It's a great brunch spot with really friendly staff. We ordered the US fried rice and the breakfast tartine. Portions were big and both dishes were really tasty, though the rice was a little mushy. They also have a good variety of beers on tap for dinner, so we'd come back to try that next time.
