I met Tom Tackett several years ago when I brought my Rottweiler to him for training and a behavioral evaluation. I was really impressed with his knowledge. When I recently got a new Rottweiler puppy, I didn't hesitate to give Tom a call. I started my current dog, Axel, in training with Tom at 8 weeks old. I can't tell you how amazing it has been to see the progression of having an unruly and stubborn puppy to the gentle & obedient dog that I have now. Tom has walked me through everything and has been there every step of the way for any question I've had or issue I've encountered with my new pup. Axel is now over a year old and I really can't imagine what I would've done without Tom's expertise and training. I've been stopped in public on several occasions and complimented on Axel's training and good behavior, which is really a testament to Tom's training. He's taken my dog, who is a breed that often gets a bad reputation, into a dog that complete strangers come up to and ask to pet. I've not only taken Axel to Tom for weekly training classes, but have also been able to send Axel to "camp" with Tom while I've been recovering for a recent surgery. My husband applied and was approved for a service dog through Patriotic Service Dog Foundation a non-profit in conjunction with Tackett Service Dogs. He trained for several months with "Charlie" the service dog he had been approved for and paired with for his medical and PTSD issues. We were blind sided after finding out that at the certification ceremony we would be asked to sign a contract that would say Patriotic Service Dog Foundation would retain FULL OWNERSHIP of his dog. We immediately asked the owner/founder if it was true? He said it was for the safety of the dog and that if there was ever any abuse or malnourishment they could take the dog back. We completely agree about the safety of the dog. However, this was never mentioned on the application or on the website, or in person for that matter. We placed a review on Facebook and that has since been removed, so we wanted to leave a review here as well. Please use caution when dealing with Tackett Service dogs or his non-profit Patriotic Service Dog Foundation. Ask the questions and get information before putting several months into training. If you are okay with someone else owning your dog, yet you pay for all the vet bills etc., then okay. We just want to avoid someone else being blindsided and heart broken. read more

He understands each individual dog requires different styles of corrections and motivations. My Service Dog in training has absolutely FLOURISHED in the past two weeks of going to train with Tom. Been taking my Golden Retriever puppy to Tom, Nikki and Del here in Orange now for 2 months and cannot say enough how great they are - extremely knowledgable and they truly care for your dog. It's hard to find a reliable dog trainer anywhere, especially one that also boards your dog when you are away (essentially giving you the benefit of your dog getting some training while you are out). These guys train service, therapy and police dogs in addition to their obedience classes which always has a great turnout of puppies and big boys of all types. What I love most is that my dog really loves Tom and his team, not to mention you can tell that these guys really love what they do. Their techniques are trustworthy and easily learnable unlike many other trainers I've worked with that use more discipline tactics instead of useful conditioning. For the previous reviewer, I'm assuming there had to be some reason why this particular dog was turned away. Tom is adamant about pups not going to dog parks because all it takes is one awful dog (and owner) to give a bad lasting memory to the pup that could last forever or make the pup horribly sick. Most dogs at these parks aren't trained and could have contagious sicknesses that owners leave untreated. However, this is one of those places where you should use your best judgment - if you are comfortable with a dog park location that you've been visiting for years, then there is nothing wrong with that because you are familiar with those that bring their dogs there. However, if Tom and his team turn your dog (or you) away for this reason, you are definitely missing out on what I've felt is the best dog training out here in OC. Use his knowledge, he's been doing this for many years and knows what's best for your dog. I highly recommend these guys and will continue using them for my pup. read more

Tom and his staff are top notch! I have personally known Tom for many, many years and he's our go-to guy when it comes to dogs. He's always been straight-forward and goes above and beyond to help his clients. I especially like that they provide pay as you go training, unlike other trainers that suck you in to buying 10-week packages just for basic commands, thinking that's all the training that your dog is going to need (especially if its a puppy, which needs a lot more than just a puppy bootcamp). I 1st found this foundation in 2016, while at the time I had a lot in my plate and could not partake in program at that time, Tom still kept me involved and up to date until the time came I was approved to begin the training with my service dog. I have been a client with tom and his crew since 2014 and there is not one day I have regretted it. I went through his service dog training with a GSD. Tom who is a veteran cofounded a non profit that provides well trained service dog to service members who have sustained life changing injuries like myself. It's a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere during class, and I found tom to be very personable. I'd say tom is a balanced trainer, with good focus of positive re enforcement training but will also utilize other training tools if needed. They have been there for me any time I have had follow up questions or concerns and has been very prompt with responses. I would drive for over two hours each way, that's how much I enjoyed training with him. I'd say the classes are kid friendly (well behaved) , and he is familiar with working with people with a variety of disabilities. The best $25 I spent for one group session. I was at my wits end. We have a pure breed male Labrador that was 7 months old at the time. He is a house dog and we gave him too much freedom and not enough obedience. Taking him for a walk using a harness was exhausting (he is 60lbs) and the last straw was him putting a hole in our living room wall (not from chewing). I was recommended to Tom Tackett Service Dogs and gave him a call and we attended a Saturday class. Nicole the Director greeted me and took control of my dog and asked if I mind the choke collar. I never used one and up for anything. Nicole was able to walk my dog with ease and taught me how to properly use the Choke collar. I really liked the group setting because I got to hear all the other owners challenges with their dog and Nicole shared with the class how to correct. In one session I was able to take my dog for a walk with ease. Also I was provided the tools to work with my dog at home in the house and around my 5 year old. I still go to the group classes for further training on commands but also so my dog can be around other dogs. read more

Last summer I came to Tackett Service Dogs a broken person. I was too anxious to leave the house to even get food for myself. As a result I would go hungry. I was also suffering from seizures triggered by stress daily. I had no hope. A boyfriend found Tackett through some internet searches and called Tom right away. After much discussion it was decided that a service dog would be right for me. I came out for a few months before I even had a dog and they welcomed me with open arms. Trainer Milan even allowed me to work with his own personal service dog to get use to the training. I was hooked from the beginning. I started looking forward to the days ahead of me and found living to the next day wasn't as hard as it use to be in the past. After 2 months of coming out they found me my perfect dog. She is a yellow lab named Lily. My life has forever changed since I met her and began training with Tackett. Not only do I have a best friend who follows me wherever I go but I have made lasting friendships. Trainer Del and Milan have been so patient with all my questions and have never made me feel like an inconvenience. Even when I would text them late at night with why my puppy kept getting the hiccups... Tom is the most knowledgable and the results speak for themselves if you follow direction. I do not know what my life would be like if I hadn't of found Tackett Service Dogs. For the first time in years I have goals and plans for myself. I am on track to graduate college and start a career. None of this would have been possible if it weren't for Tackett and everything they have given me.
