This was my 2nd visit to Taco Bar after many years and it's still a hit! The lunch special is 2 tacos, rice and beans for $8.99. Perfect amount of food. I got the streak taco and the pastor taco - both hard shells. Both were flavorful and filling. With the construction on US19, be careful not to miss the turn or you won't be able to turn around for awhile and get back to it. I hope they can stay in business once the new hwy is up and not close like all the other small businesses. read more

Delighted to have found this relatively cheap authentic-tasting Mexican food place near us. While the ambience is minimal, there is indoor seating and out and everything was nice and clean. The server was sweet and competent. Husband had the two taco special with rice and beans (chicken). I had the two tostadas special (steak). Love the provision of a salsa bar. The specials include drinks you can fill yourself. Our total came to $19.24 and we went away quite full. Will definitely try their nachos in the future. Food tastes "ok". But my burrito came out so "cold" that neither the cheese inside the burrito or the cheese on top of the burrito didn't even attempt to melt. Not sure I've ever cut into a burrito and had cold shredded cheese inside. It's just strange and unexpected. I'm not sure it was intended as such. Server seems nice and helpful. But nobody seeming to look for satisfied eaters or quality experiences. Not too busy, could certainly look around and notice some poor experiences. I would have been happy paying $25 for the quality of food I just ate. This place used to be quite average. It is now AMAZING! 3.5 Randomly came across this place, outside doesn't look like much but it was cute inside. My good rating of this place it mostly due to the interior cleanliness, staff friendliness, and tacos. Otherwise, I personally wasn't a huge fan of the other food we ordered. Would say unique in content, but average in flavor at best. The chorizo tacos were my favorite. We also tried a few of their other menu items like the sopes and shrimp soup. I found the sope hard to eat, meaning it's going to get messy. The shrimp soup was unique, the flavor grew on me the more I ate it, I haven't really had a soup like that before. Oh, we also got the Chips and Salsa... I didn't enjoy those. I found the salsa to be too spicy and not to my taste, and the texture of the chips were not my favorite either. They were so thin that they cut the top of my mouth. Again, I enjoyed the tacos. If I came back I would like to try some of the other menu items as well. We ordered take out on Uber eats so this review is regarding the food only. We ordered the marinated pork tacos, garlic shrimp tacos, chips and guacamole, and the tamales. Everything was amazing. The food, right down to the tortillas, tasted fresh and authentic. The guacamole was incredible. I would've liked a bigger portion. It definitely was only enough for one. But that could be because it was so delicious I didn't share. I'm not usually one who often enjoys Mexican food- but this food was so good I found myself craving it the next day! Update: we ordered the Pastor Pork and the corn tortillas off uber eats and we ate tacos for the next three days. And I still miss the food....so good. read more

After driving by many times and getting a recommendation from our daughter, we decided to try the Taco Bar on US 19 between Republic and Curlew. It was a bit of a challenge with the construction on 19; but, we are glad we did. This place is not fancy but the food and service is outstanding. My wife ordered the carnitas dinner and I ordered 2 chorizo tacos. Both came with rice and beans. Our order was taken at the counter efficiently. While we waited I got samples of the 3 self serve salsas. All 3 were great. The roasted tomato was the most spicy and my favorite. The jalapeño was medium spicy and the cilantro cream was mild. When I got back to my seat the food was just arriving on vintage porcelain plates. My tacos were over stuffed with tasty chorizo next to a large portion of rice and beans. Her carnitas portion was huge, we took half home for today's lunch. It came with rice, beans and warm tortillas. The seating was simple and comfortable. I attached a photo of their extensive menu. But luckily it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Decor: 5/5 stars It is a clean, trendy place that reminds me of Fresh Kitchen in South Tampa. The colorful menu is on the wall. We sat at the bar. There was only one employee there working the register and table which was odd to me. She also seemed odd: very timid, soft spoken and disinterested. I hope she's not the owner because I would hire someone more enthusiastic ASAP. Food: 3/5 stars 1. Chips and queso were the best thing we ordered. Reasonably priced at $3.75 2. Sopes: comes with 3 sopes and can order 3 different meats. I ordered chicken, pork and steak. The chicken was the best one. 3. Tacos: street style tacos. The closest authentic tacos you can get in this area if you don't want to trek to Polk County for authentic taco trucks. It's $2.99 per taco which is pricey but you get a lot of meat. The chips and queso were fine, the queso is very loose but had pretty good flavor. The elote had an off putting taste that was nothing like what I have had in elote before, I was bummed because this is what I was most excited for - it was pretty foul tasting. The sopes were just awful, I got an assortment and the sope dough was so tough I could hardly chew through it - I ended up just eating the toppings like a salad but even so it was pretty flavorless. Another great experience at Taco Bar. I tried three tacos: carnitas, bistec and pastor. The carnitas was a little dry, to be honest, but the pastor was the ticket! It was super flavorful and juicy. Had to order the street corn and it was phenomenally cheesy. I love that they provide a lime for your beer and that little salsa bar is perfection! You'll fall in love with the clean modern design, too! - They originally used peanut oil in the fryer, which was a no-go for my allergic bf. Thankfully, we were told they now use vegetable oil! - Free chips and salsa after 5pm! - Their house salsa is SPICY, so be warned! Check out the fresh salsa bar for more mild options. - They have outside seating! It's with a view of US19, but at least they have it! Great tacos! They use corn tortillas. The menu has a simple Mexican menu. They carry horchata. The shrimp taco is spicy. I ordered steak, pastor and campechano (steak and chorizo). $2 taco Wednesday! Any specials are a little more. My shrimp and campechsno was more than $2 but still pretty cheap. They offer crunchy taco too. Still need to try something other than tacos next time. This is a clean and modern interpretation of an authentic Mexican taco place. I'm used to holes in the wall when it's time to get the best tacos. Taco Bar is definitely not one of those! It's spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated, has four wonderful sauces at the sauce bar, and offers beers for those that imbibe. Unfortunately, the meats we had were all a bit chewy and the guacamole, while fresh and tasty, had literally zero spice in it. I was hoping for many slivers of jalapeno to be hiding in there somewhere but no such luck! Based on the fact that most of the clientele seemed to be non-Mexican, I think they toned things down for the American palate. Finally, the tacos are $3 which is more than so many other authentic Mexican places in Tampa Bay. None of them are decorated like this place, have a sauce bar, or are on a major thoroughfare which explains the price difference. read more

The burito was huge, and filled with everything - as that's what the husbeast ordered, and I got the marinated pork. The tostadas were crisp and thin, the meat was a bit on the smoky side, but once I added some queso to them, they were a bit more palitable. Over all, $30 for our meal was a decent price. We literally got thrown out of the place. This is downright the worse service we've ever had at a restaurant. Yelp, google, their website, and even the door said they closed at 9pm. We walk in at 7:40pm and the attendant (only one there btw, and had to wait like 5 minutes to be served, as was nowhere to be seen) takes our order and asks us "dine in or take out?" When I say dine in, he proceeds to say "well we close at 8". I state even the door says 9pm, to which he responds "oh, that's a new thing." He takes my payment and have to place the tip on the computer (before service). It takes about 10 mins to get our drinks and he brings out our chips and the kids food. He then comes back and tells me "we're closing can I pack the rest of your food to go and bring you to go containers for the kids. My kids are mid meal. I'm sitting there flabbergasted and had to say to him "are you really throwing us out???" He tells me "I have to talk to the manager about changing the hours online". To this I show him the decals on his door that says 9pm. This is the worse service in the world. I explained to him that the kitchen May close at 8, but if people are still eating and you took their done in order you can't just throw them out because you want to leave. That being said the food is good, at least my kids stuff was good. Have to go to the hotel and eat my food, probably cold and soggy later. Manager needs to address this ASAP. Wife is also a horchata lover and said their horchata tastes like soap. I actually thought it was good. read more

The tamales were very good and had a lot of flavor, but should have been meatier. The taco was also very good. I loved their hot sauce bar - the cilantro jalapeño sauce was my favorite and was pretty spicy. All of the prices were very reasonable as well. We'll definitely come back for the BOGO burritos. Some of the best street style tacos I've had. I opted for a mix of Diablo shrimp and steak. Combine that with their house made sauces I had fun experimenting different mixes.
