As the town grew in both population and size, I feel like many other Mexican restaurants popped up around Salsa Fresh, and it had been some time before I made a return. I'd say that the other spots have tastier and more authentic grub, but Salsa Fresh's prices and nostalgic vibe cannot be overlooked. You walk up to the counter when you come in to order your food, and you dine in a relatively modest dining room. The vibe definitely gives me an early 2010s feel. My first visit here I ordered their California burrito with chicken. I thought this was just okay, the burrito ratios seemed a bit wonky with a lot more tortilla then anything else. The interior of the burrito was a bit bland on its own, especially the chicken. It could've used either some more seasoning or some char from the grill, that would've taken it up a notch. I decided to try something different on my second visit. If you go on a Saturday, one of their specials are their spicy pork tacos. I was intrigued, and decided to give it a try. I was a bit confused when they brought my plate over because all of the sides were on my plate, accompanied by two rolls of tin foil. I soon realized that the whole tacos were in the tin foil, never seen that before! Usually Mexican restaurants will just put the tortillas in the tin foil to keep it warm and to prevent it from drying out, but they put the whole taco inside! The plate came with beans and rice. The best thing was the pork, it was actually packed with flavor and spice. The tortilla needed to be put on the grill, and to be quite honest, didn't seem to be the freshest. Perhaps the juice from the pork soaked into the soft tortilla shell and turned it to a mess. The rice and beans were a bit disappointing to my tasting - I think I just expect more bold flavors and Salsa Fresh's flavors are more mild. They also have a salsa bar for the complimentary chips that they give you. Their homemade salsas were pretty good, especially this roasted tomato one that they had, that one was my favorite. My meal also came with some queso so the chips were great for that as well. I forgot to mention, both meals seen above were less than $13, with the burrito being under $9. I feel this is Salsa Fresh's biggest selling point, it is tough to beat those prices. Big brands seem to be giving you less food for more money, so I can certainly get on board with a local business offering affordable food to the community!

Almost always will you see a humongous line at this truck - so much that the past few events I've been to, they've brought a separate truck just for their Elotes and drinks. First the Elotes - pretty good for the most part. My issue...the price. At LEAST $5.50 for one Elote, pretty high knowing it's one piece of corn with its usual toppings. Their Walking Elotes is $10! What that is is a personal sized bag of chips with elote toppings inside. The quesabirria is what I (and what I assume others) primarily line up for. Quesabirria has been trending for the past couple of years now so people want to try. Was it worth the long wait? Not at all. Now I won't say the quesabirria is bad by any means BUT it's full of grease. The consommé was probably one of the more basic consommés I've had. Very watery, while greasy, and lacks flavor. Making things worse were the stale chips. At least the queso was good. Spoke with a friend and asked for their thoughts on the truck, being that they knew it was a long line as well...but had the exact same issues/sentiments about the items.

The menu offers a good deal of flexibility, boasting choices in proteins (traditional meats, shrimp, or veggies), spiciness levels, and styles. Unexpectedly, they also offered red/juicy and quesobirria quesadillas. The "elote" side of the business offers the titular street corn, with or without a dusting of tortilla or red hot chips. Lemonades range from single flavors such as peach or strawberry to multi-berry bonanzas, and a few are available as horchatas instead. I ended up with a birria quesadilla, tortilla chip-dusted esquites (elote bowl), and a mojito lemonade. The folks running the trucks were friendly, and, even by food truck standards, very fast. The quesadilla, which included broth, chips, salsa, and, of course, queso, offered quite a bit of food for $14. Less justifiable was the $5.50 charged for a regular-sized lemonade. The food was, by and large, satisfying. The quesadilla offered tender meat and a tasty -- if cilantro-heavy -- broth. The tortillas were a bit greasy, however, and will have you missing La Sinaloense's version. The torti esquites were thoroughly addictive. It may be just corn, sour cream and spices, but damn if the execution wasn't spot-on. The confusingly-named mojito lemonade had about as much in common with a mojito as a sea horse does with a stallion, but aside from being very sweet, it was still a refreshing drink on a June day. I appreciated the amount of fresh fruit (berries, pineapple, and kiwi) included. Had I been standing in long lines eagerly anticipating what awaited me, I likely would have walked away from Queso Monster and Elote Monster slightly disappointed. But thanks to fortuitous timing, I was able to enjoy it for what it was: good though not flawless Mexican food and drink.

I ordered two chorizo tacos this time and they were filling with plenty of protein and good flavor. The chorizo had a nice kick and tasted fresh, and the tacos felt authentic without trying too hard. In all seriousness, I'm all for this concept. Yelp is all about discovering local treasures, and nothing says small business like a cutesy origin story behind the name. The concept behind KocinA is South American street food. Expect to find arepas, burrito bowls, empanadas, and things of that sort on the menu. Entrees are all $10+, which is common enough for food trucks. I ordered the ropa vieja plate for $12, essentially a twice-as-expensive barbacoa burrito bowl from Chipotle. I expect a combination of exciting flavors and quality from food trucks. This expectation should frankly be lowered by this point, but I continue to dream on. The ropa vieja plate was mostly fine. There wasn't anything particular to like or dislike about the food itself; however, look at the picture that I posted and notice the obvious flaw in the way they serve it. In what universe would you put paper in a container when you're serving a burrito bowl? I'm sure I do need more fiber in my diet, but I have a fairly strict policy against eating paper. The paper would quite obviously get soaked immediately due to a combination of the juices from the black beans and the meat. This should make it an obvious no-go... shouldn't it? Even with the health concerns, I'd still pick the barbacoa bowl from Chipotle over the ropa vieja plate at KocinA. Aside from the extra fiber of the dish, the flavors didn't quite match the price. I'm sure there's other menu items that aren't served with such wretched stupidity at KocinA, but I don't see any reason to try them. I'll prefer to let other food trucks disappoint me, since there's a marginally better chance that they won't.

The Chino Latino Lomo Saltado (Peruvian stir-fry of chicken with onions, tomatoes, peppers, and French fries, served on white rice and topped with Asian slaw, $7) is very difficult to eat without a fork as a result of all the stuffing! There are many Asian fusion places in the Triangle, but I still think that many of the menu combinations I've seen are odd, including this lomo saltado with "Asian slaw (which turned out to be kimchi)." Was shown a wall full of bins of tortilla chips. I've never seen this before at any Moe's across several states. I was the only customer in the location. Were they expecting a big rush? Cashier rang me up at $25.95 for one burrito, one large soda, and free chips. Wow! I responded that Moe's prices have become unaffordable. The best, fresh tortillas I've ever had are to be had here. They wrap carefully cooked meats. You can get tacos in sirloin (Angus), pork adobado, chicken adobado, compechano (pork and beef), and chicken fajita. Tacos come with chopped onion, tomato and cilantro, with a wedge of lime. And a bag of chips and really good salsa. Fresher than Baja Fresh and cheaper than McDonald's "healthy" alternatives they change an arm and leg for. I would like to say the food is restaurant quality, but it's so much better and more authentic than any Mexican restaurant.
