Build Your Own Burrito with 8 oz. queso
    Jillian S.

Ordered pickup from here on a weekday evening. We enjoyed the meal, however, our order was not accurate. Ordered: Build your own burrito ($11.14) Extra bag of chips ($3.58) Shrimp Tacos ($7.90 for 2) - asked for no cheese. They said they could accommodate this but then made them with cheese. Queso ($5.39 for 8 oz.) Salsa was missing from order Pros: -reasonable prices (comparable to similar restaurants) -flavorful food -reasonable portions -easy phone in orders and restaurant pick up -entrees come with chips Cons: -inaccurate orders -door dash prices are higher than restaurant prices so we ended up calling in our order -door dash does not allow item customization -lettuce was soggy

The (mostly) ladies behind the counter are a well oiled machine, cranking out lunchtime food bullets por los chicos.
    Chris S.

Salsa Fresh is a local chain burrito joint, serving as a competitor to more well known chains like Chipotle. It is clean, has lots of staff grilling away in the open kitchen behind the counter. The offerings are straight foward, which is a positive in my book. That is, it offers chicken, shredded and sliced grilled steak (asada), pork, and veggie. Then you can add your favorite toppings like beans, rice, specific salsa type, and greens. Guacamole, sour cream, cheese (except queso fresca) are extra. There are other options like having it in a bowl or having it enchilada style (topped with sauce and then broiled quickly). West Coast transplants will really appreciate a place to get a standard "food bullet". And the steady stream of guests coming in a lunch seem to agree. The food is not grab-your-hair-and-scream-eureka amazing, but it is certainly good. All the ingredients including the salsas seem fresh and tasty. I can see coming here again and again and again as a lunch staple. One of the key differences of this place is that the burritos are grilled, not steamed. This puts a bit of color on the tortilla, helps melt any cheese, and makes it warmer. However, the downside is that a grill is much slower than the steamer that many places use to quickly heat up a tortilla. So, don't be surprised if your order takes 10-15 minutes to make. So if you want fast food, go next door to McDonalds or head over to the Chipotle to get your week's worth of sodium. If you want better Mexican food, cross the street to Mi Cancun. But if you want consistent, tasty, perfectly fine burrito - come here. Say hi to me. I'll be the guy with his face covered in burrito goo.

The chips salsa was super good, but not enough to redeem the disappointing burrito

Seems a bit slow as I had three folks tending to me. Opted for something out of the ordinary so the super sweet waitress suggested the mayonnaise shrimp. That is my translation. Not bad as the sauce is a mayo chipotle ranch sauce. I got the mixed grill veggies and the refried beans. All was good. It was late so just had water which they kept fresh glasses coming. Chips and Salsa were tasty. Chips nice and fresh and crisp. Decor was typical Tex mex decor with brightly colored painting. The booth I set at had a particularly lovely village set on a lake. Very nice.

They offered up chips and salsa as soon as I sat down at the bar, and both were very good. The salsa was flavorful. The chips were fresh and crisp. The menu is fairly extensive, and there are certainly a few different vegetarian and vegetable forward items. Not a huge number, but enough. I ended up ordering some refried bean enchiladas (enchiladas Mexicanas). They were fine but really not inspired. The enchilada sauce was good but not sufficiently plentiful or flavorful. It was a good pairing with a pint of craft beer, but not something I would seek out again. Overall, this seemed like a nice enough place. It's probably just optimized for people who are interested in ordering some of the meat-based entrees.

While the food is on the pricey end, the portion sizes make up for it and the quality is there. On my first visit, I tried their Tres Amigos dish. It is basically a mix grill with shrimp, steak and chicken. It came with rice, beans, and veggies. The meats were super flavorful and the rice and beans were actually great! I hate it when a Mexican place just dumps overcooked rice and goopy beans and calls it a day. The veggies were very clearly frozen and came from a bag, wasn't all that excited by that. I think arroz con pollo (ACP) is one of the simplest, yet, most delicious Mexican dishes. It is chicken, cheese and rice, how can you mess that up? Mamacita does their ACP justice. The chicken is tender, there is a nice balance between the cheese and rice, and it is just a great combination altogether. They also do a decent job with their birria tacos (although wasn't the biggest fan of the consume) and their churrasco plate. They even top it with a legit salad, not just the chopped lettuce and tomato. In the end, I am always full and satisfied with the meal. I certainly think this is worth a visit. Oh, I forgot to mention everyone's favorite thing about the place, they have a robot server! Definitely very cute.

The staff were very attentive and hospitable. On Tuesdays, they have a Mix & Match 3 tacos deal for $11.99. You can mix both flour or corn tortilla tacos, but it doesn't include the Birria tacos. I ended up trying the shrimp tacos on flour tortilla, ribeye taco on corn, and al pastor on corn. I also tried a bite of the carne asada on flour taco from my sister. I would highly recommend the al pastor taco. It's juicy (comes with pineapple sticks) and the flavor is fantastic. The shrimp was also good but it's on the heavier side bc they add cheese. The ribeye was my least favorite and although the flavor is good, it's pretty dry without much sauce. If you want steak, I would go for the carne asada instead (they add guac) Overall, fantastic restaurant and a great deal for tacos on Tuesdays. My favorite part is the complimentary chips and salsa. When you arrive there is plenty of parking around the restaurant. Walking in you'll feel like you've been transported to a trendy, upscale, and casual comfort atmosphere. For appetizers we ordered the dip sampler which had the queso, guacamole, and bean dip. By far my favorite dip was the queso. For my entree I ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly, and the shrimp was a little overcooked but tasty. Also, the flour tortillas tasted like they were made in house. This is probably some of the closer Mexican food I'm use to in Texas. Definitely check this restaurant out if you are in the Cary area.

I usually rotate between the tacos, enchiladas, and molcajetes, and while the tacos themselves are just okay, the overall experience is solid. The fresh chips are easily some of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant (warm and crisp). Add queso to those chips and it really seals the deal. They more than make up for the tacos being a bit underwhelming and are honestly reason enough to come back. This is a great neighborhood spot if you're looking for authentic flavors, generous portions, and excellent chips and dips (biggest downside is no liquor aka no margaritas). I was really one mayonnaise filled torta away from missing out on my favorite Mexican restaurant of Cary. The food is some of the freshest and most authentic in the area, and is consistently spot on. Forget heavy burritos or overly sauced enchiladas, this place is the real deal. When you come to Esmeralda Grill, you should really focus on the meat heavy dishes, whether it be via land or sea. There are so many different options to choose from, from both categories. When thinking seafood, expect the full fish. If you find yourself with the fresh grilled tilapia, you will receive a delicious whole fish that tastes as if it was caught that morning. It is such a fantastic option. I also appreciate the camarones a la diabla, or Diablo shrimp. The shrimp are plump and juicy, the spice of the dish is excites your taste buds and is a great dish. My favorite entrees are the land meat dishes though. El Trio Perfecto is my go-to order, it is grilled steak, chicken and pork all on one plate with rice, beans, salad, and tortillas. The Mexican spice rub on the meats is absolutely mouth watering, the flavors are so bold and tasty. The meats are all cooked to perfection and the portions are gigantic. You can make different tacos with the various meats, it is seriously one of my favorite Mexican dishes. I would highly recommend this! Additionally, Esmeralda Grill has so many other wonderful dishes for different flavor profiles. My grandparents are pretty particular about empanadas, but simply cannot get enough of Esmeralda's version. They also make some killer tacos, and some very affordable ones if you were to come on Tuesday! The moral of the story? Don't base your opinion of a restaurant after a single visit. You don't come across a fantastic hole in the wall every day, Esmeralda Grill is one that every Mexican food lover should know!

The staff really get into celebrating the birthdays, and that part was really fun! However, it took close to an hour for the server to ask us for a food order - including appetizers. Service was around a 3.5, friendly but slow. We wanted to start with the dip trio, but after waiting about 55 minutes from when we sat down, we had to flag down our waitress and ask if we could put in the order. She then came back to take the regular food order, not leaving a whole lot of time between the dip coming out and our food coming out. The dip trio was OK, the queso was the best part. I'm not sure if the dip was supposed to be a cold dip or a hot dip, but it was like a lukewarm. I got the chicken and steak fajitas, which I would give a 2.5 out of five. The meat was a bit chewy. Overall I'd give the food a 3. The drinks were a bit too sugary and not well balanced--more filler than alcohol--so I'd give them a 2 (tried a sip of friends, the house marg, mango marg, and drink that comes in a little bathtub). It's a really nice spot for a party/celebration atmosphere, could be very fun for a bday, but you'll need some patience and to keep your expectations at bay for food. They also add a 3% credit card fee when using card, which I personally dislike. In general, I don't tend to patronize businesses that do that.

We've recommended this place more times than I can count, so it genuinely pains me to write this. Today's Sunday brunch was a frustrating experience from start to finish. The wait was long, which we've come to expect and honestly never minded because the food made it worth it. What made today different was the service. One person in our group never had their order put in. We only found out when everyone else's food arrived -- after an already lengthy wait. Getting our server's attention to correct it was its own ordeal, and by the time the missing order finally came out, the rest of the table had long finished eating. To top it off, the music was blasting at a volume that made it impossible to hear each other across the table. At Sunday brunch. We asked our server to turn it down and were told the manager said it couldn't be done. I genuinely don't know what to do with that answer. The food, as always, was good -- and that's the only reason this isn't a one-star review. We'll give it another chance because the kitchen hasn't let us down.
