Make Salsa, Not War. The sign over the salsa bar made me smile because I love salsas and Taco Centro had an abundance of options at the salsa bar. It was a positive sign for our visit. We also loved the blue lights and decorations - different than a lot of taco joints. We walked in and were able to place our order right away. We ordered two Al Pastor Tacos and a Carne Asado Burrito. The prices on the menu price this place a little higher than a lot of the other downtown taco shops but not so high as to deter us from giving them a shot. The Al Pastor tacos come with fresh pineapple, cilantro, onions and a cilantro sauce. The meat was tender but overall we felt the tacos weren't anything super special and they were somewhat small for the price. The carne asada burrito was of a decent size and the meat was super tender. It had guacamole, onions, a house salsa and cilantro inside. Again, price on this was a little high but given the Gaslamp District location it wasn't too bad. Pricing and average Al Pastor are the reason for knocking this down one star. Service was friendly. They give you a number after ordering and bring the food out to you. Again, I can't say enough about having a good salsa collection and Taco Centro excels in that regard. We will come back again sometime soon. We like that they are open until midnight most days and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. If you're out celebrating in the Gaslamp it's another option for a late night snack. Please note that they do not have assigned parking at this location. read more

Forgot our order.. waited for about 30min. Ordered 3 different type of burritos. Any other burrito spot would either label or wrap them differently to tell them apart, this place didn't. My husband has a shellfish allergy and one of the burritos had shrimp. I gave this place a one start because this is a very irresponsible thing to do that could lead to someone getting hurt. Obsessed with the mushroom burrito!! It's just perfect when you don't feel like having meat and hard to find anywhere else. I've had other items too and they've been great as well but the mushroom burrito is my absolute fave. Great option for vegans as well. Their salsa bar is OFF THE HOOK!! Wow! Service super quick! I brought my vegan friend here as they offer a few vegan options. I tried two vegetarian options, the nopales and mushroom tacos. Salsa bar was a solid 5 stars. I loved the picked red onion, jalapeños, and spice section of salsas. The tacos were delicious. Loaded with filling. Corn tortillas had good flavor. And this place is really inexpensive. Closest taco shop to our home in East Village didn't disappoint. Excellent service and delicious freshly prepared tacos, burritos, mulitas etc. Their salsa bar is pretty stacked! Including chiles toreados, limes, cucumbers, various salsas including their tasty cilantro cream and some crazy hot options as well. In typical taco shop fashion you order at the counter, are given a number and then hang out, get salsas etc. There is seating inside but it's pretty limited, however there are picnic tables up front. Oh, they also have some excellent draft beers to choose from, go between 3-5-M-F and they're only $5. My only beef is with their carne asada. I thought it was on the dry and underseasoned. Instead try their Al Pastor Quesadilla, it's bomb! I mixed their green salsa with the cilantro cream, omg, yes! We're pretty happy that Tacos Centro opened so close by, ultra convenient. They also offer online ordering if you want to order ahead and pickup. Looking forward to breakfast burritos in the near future. The food is so amazing here!! I am picky when it comes to chicken, its texture and flavors were on point. Their rice is full of flavor and has small carrot, tomato and corn chunks. Black beans were bomb, soft but full and not mushy looking. They offer a nice salsa bar and many drinks to choose from beers , margaritas , sodas, etc. Have been here a handful of times and definitely coming back when I am in the area. read more

This place makes some pretty good tacos. I had a pair of the al pastor tacos off the vertical spit. The al pastor or marinated pork was tasty and tender for the most part. It was a little over done in places but not by much. I liked that the al pastor came with small bits of pineapple. The avocado cream was very good, and the tacos came with a good amount of chopped onions and cilantro. I like that they make the corn tortillas on the spot fresh for each taco. The corn tortillas were excellent. They offer a good salsa bar and a variety of other tacos and burritos, including grilled fish tacos, but they were out the Sunday I stopped in. The young ladies who were at the counter and in the kitchen were super nice, and apologetic about being out of fish. The place offers a very good amount of inside and outside seating. read more

Fourth taco place we visited on our trip to San Diego. This place has an AWESOME condiment station. I recommend getting a basket of chips so you can try their various sauces. Vast selection of tacos here and decent tap beer selection (mainly domestics). The grilled pescado tacos were very fresh, but very "fishy". The Baja taco was more of a traditional battered fish taco. Two of us felt the Mar y Tierra taco was the single best taco we tried on the entire trip. A few of the meat taco varieties had a lot of juice run-off, but we're still tasty. We DoorDash nachos from here and we love them! We've tried the surf and turf and carne asada nachos. Every now and then the carne asada is a touch tough, but usually it's perfectly cooked, juicy, and delicious. My fiance started getting a side of it so that after we eat the top layer of nachos we can add another layer of carne asada. We've also tried the ceviche and tostadas -- both good but to be honest I'm sticking with the nachos! read more

You can serve yourself from a selection of seriously 10+ salsas at a toppings bar and the burritos are massive. I got the California burrito with carnitas and wow it was amazing. Solid place to get tacos in the gaslamp district! I was in town for a conference, and this place was within walking distance. It is very inviting, so we gave it a try! It's a fast casual concept, so you order at the register and get a table number. Some of the numbers were getting called, some orders were brought to the table I tasted some of my friend's corn, and it was delish! For my tacos, I had the mahi mahi and shrimp. The shrimp taco had an odd flavor to it, but I really enjoyed the mahi mahi! They have lots of options, so I would definitely come back to try more! read more

The quality of the meat was good because the meat had no fat and the tortillas were all homemade. The only call out would be the music being a little too loud. The camaron quesadilla was good but very greasy... very... I didn't eat it all bc of how greasy it was But the nopal tacos were bomb!!! Their tortillas are HAND MADE!! The ladies are there making them, and I guess that's what makes the taco even more yummy... We also got a quesabirria and some asada fries which were also very good.. I for sure finished my tacos and the quesabirria.. service was great, friendly and quick.. another thing I really liked is they have a big space for outside seating and they sell all kinds of drinks/beer therefore it's a very nice spot to just chill... have some tacos and a beer! I ordered the Baja fish taco and the taco azul, which was a fancier carne asada taco on a blue corn tortilla with black beans and cheese. The Baja fish taco was fantastic. The carne asada was just ok to me, the meat being a little tough. I regret not ordering the Birria and Al pastor after I saw the spit in the kitchen. Will return to try those for sure. My husband got the carne asada fries and loved them. They didn't seem to come with much on them, but the salsa bar had plenty of extra toppings like grilled onions and peppers, pickled red onions, pico, limes, etc. It's a pretty small place, but actually has a decent amount of seating both indoors and outdoors. Love this new addition to the late night food scene in Gaslamp! This taco shop should definitely be on your list of places to go after a night out at the bar--being open till 3am on the weekend is CLUTCH. We got the Al pastor and the birria tacos, and while both were great, the birria was *chefs kiss.* There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. This is definitely a casual joint--you order at the counter and bring the number to your seat. This is also a great place to go for optionality--they have a ton of different types of tacos to chose from from beef, chicken, fish, veggie... The tacos are quite decently sized and priced--2 or 3 were enough to fill us up (but don't get me wrong, I have an endless pit of a stomach when it comes to tacos).
