Dinner in Kaka'ako, Honolulu, Hawaii... This food truck experience reminds me of the times my Los Angeles friends and I stood on the sidewalks and ate tacos in the chilly weather... brrr!!! Eating tacos in Honolulu is much better because of the weather. Even though it's January, we have wonderful 70°F temperature at 8pm! ********** Located at Howzit Brewery, Taco Invader is currently open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday, and select Fridays. Check their Instagram page for the exact schedule and specials. I was fortunate to visit on Taco Tuesday when tacos are only $3.50. I got the Adobada (marinated pork) on a 6 inch corn tortilla which was stuffed! I especially liked the grilled, smokey flavor and pickled veggie topping! Super delicious! I also got a watermelon agua fresca because the horchata was sold out. Another item that was sold out was the vegan chorizo Taco made from mushrooms! I'll have to return for it and also get the carne asada and chicken tacos next time! Note: there's indoor, open-air seating as well as outdoor picnic table style seats. I started out at the picnic tables, but it was too dark to take photos. I moved indoors, but it was crowded and noisy at first. Later, some people left and I got a seat by the entrance. It was a bit warm, so I sat near the fan. Service is very friendly and helpful! When my order was taken, I was asked my name so that they could call out when my orderwas ready. I said, "Hello Kitty". The two guys smiled and laughed. They didn't get to call out "Hello Kitty" because they brought my meal to me!!! Thank you! When I was leaving, they said, "Thank you, Hello Kitty!" Haha! I love when you can eat food and experience the emotion behind each plate. We ordered tamales to start (OMG...), and shared a taco omakase(WOW!), which is essentially chef's choices of tacos and small plates. Came to the conclusion, I could eat anything on Chef Gilbert's menu. To add: Chef came by the table each time to describe the dish. Seriously one of the best taco trucks I've ever tasted. Being from LA, I've tried a ton of food trucks, but this one was the best! Gilbert, the owner, makes his tacos Tijuana-style, and it's so delicious and flavorful. His taco place is next to Howz-it brewery, which is perfect to just grab a drink and eat some tasty tacos. These are the Taco Man tacos you miss from your weekends when youd escape 32nd St or Pendleton and cross the border for the best tacos you've ever had. These are the tacos you'd get at 11am after a crazy night before and somehow they'd heal your body AND soul. Just got to O'ahu and I'm their new #1 fan. Fresh ingredients, delicious tacos, A+ homemade salsas (plural!), and Aqua Fresca you'd choose over your girlfriend. Also, dude, the FRIES. Perfectly crispy with a blend of seasoning that, you can't put your finger on why they are so good or what spice makes it so good, because it's the blend. First off let me say that I was born in Tijuana but raised in Ensenada, my dad is from Mexicali. Yes I went there lol!! These tacos are great! The carne asada, chorizo, adobada all had amazing flavor. You have to remember all adobada is made different. The guacamole is like the street style in Mexico. So glad we finally made it out!! Taco Invader does a weekly pop up at Howzit Brewing and we've been dying to try their tacos for a while! The wait has been worth it because these tacos were packed with flavor and some of the best we've been able to find in Hawaii. The carne asada and adobada (marinated pork) are excellent and the corn tortillas taste fresh and homemade. We are hot sauce fanatics and loved their pineapple habanero one. The service was great and their partnership with Howzit is a match made in heaven. It's the perfect place for them to find their semi-permanent home throughout the week. This amazing vendor is located in the Kakaako area right across fishscake. Look for the baby blue building with a beer joint. The tacos themselves are so bomb. It's very street taco energy, the tacos are FILLED and the don't skimp. What I love most is that there's a plethora of hot saucers for you to add to your tacos. Not just 3, but more than that to fit any spice level. What's crazy is that out of all the tacos that were filled with meat, my fav was the chorizo mushroom. I know chorizo is meat but it was grilled mushrooms flavored with chorizo spices. SO ONO. Service is great. The owner, cooks, and cashier are so high energy and are totally open to any questions you have. My only recommendation is that they open earlier like for lunch cuz I'd drive my booty down there for a quick taco during my lunch break haha! Overall, great vibes but most importantly great food. My husband and I visited this place because of all the good reviews and instagram videos we had seen of the food. Let me just say, why are you all lying? We ordered carne asada (which they charge +$1 for per taco), adobada and chicken. All three meats were just chewy pieces, lack of seasoning and unedible. Horchata was absolutely delicious I must say and it's probably the only good thing they have. Rice and beans were average. We ordered four adobada tacos and all four had completely burnt black parts that could not be eaten; I felt scammed. I wouldn't even feed that to a homeless. Nice people. Bien tacos. I could tell that the owner really cared about the product he was putting out. The quality of tortillas and salsa de aquacate for the tacos de adobada were a plus. Reminded me of the tacos you can find in centro. The owners attention to detail made his taqueria look similar to a puesto you'd actually see in Tijuana all the way down to the cooler para bebidas. Hands down, the food was good. There seems to be an overwhelming consensus that Hawaii has horrible Mexican food eateries. Really, I think it's more of an overwhelming amount of untrained and uninspired people who think they have cooking skills good enough to move here to set up shop for monetary gain. Thus resulting in an underwhelming product that leaves a bad taste in local people's mouths. Long story short, I could taste the culinary integrity in the tacos here.
