A great little lunch spot in downtown located on the corner of Bishop and Hotel. Inside is a bit dim, but cozy. Tables have a roll of paper towels as well as a bottle of hot sauce on em. Staff is always super friendly and accommodating. They're quick to make suggestions if you're suffering from analysis paralysis. I haven't had anything here that i didnt like. Carnitas are moist and delicious. The star for me, however, is the lengua. Lengua is a hard one as sometimes it comes out tough and rubbery, but not here. Here Its always cooked perfectly and is super soft and tender. Everything is reasonably priced, all things considered. Would definitely recommend as I frequent this place at least once a month. read more

Yay! TI: Don't come here on a Sunday - they're not open! Come on a Saturday when the Downtown workers aren't there! No lines! No crowds! More parking! Yeah - I parked almost right in front of the entrance on Bishop Street... in the loading zone... I was so happy! Inside, the strong odor of clorox (or some type of cleaning solution) hit me hard. Yuk! I sat on the other side of the room where ventilation was better! At the counter, I ordered three tacos, but one at a time so that they were each hot and fresh. First, I got a Fish Taco... WOW! It was so fresh that it was almost sweet! It had no batter! It was just purely grilled... simple and delicious! It was piled with lettuce and lots of fish! No skimping here! Next, I tried the Veggie Taco... yes! There were some beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce! The combination was great! If you wanna get some Mexican food in downtown for lunch, this might satisfy your craving. They got a good selection of protein and types of food like quesadilla, salad, tacos, burritos, burrito bowls, even chimichangas! I got the chicken, fish and steak tacos. The flavor was pretty good, but I had to not treat it like Mexican food to enjoy the meal... I'm not sure why the tomatoes and onions were so coarsely chopped up. They looked like vegetables ready for stir fry not for toppings in Mexican food. Then the sauce they drizzle on top tasted interesting, but glad there's some salsa verde in a separate container to eat my food with. The fish was seasoned well, but it's very soft and just broke apart when I picked up the taco. Didn't seem the be the right kind of fish to be used in tacos. The steak and the chicken meat were good. I mean I finished all my food. They tasted decent. Not too salty or sweet, nor underwhelming or overpowering in any sort. If you go in not thinking it's Mexican food, then you wouldn't be disappointed. The place had quite a few tables and it's packed during lunchtime. There was an empty table that no one took. I didn't get why until I sat down and realized the light underneath the spinning fan was shining on the table like a strobe light. I took my husband to Taco Kabana yesterday for the first time. I had been there before and raved about it to him but we hadn't had a chance to go together but we finally did yesterday and he was sooo impressed. He had three street tacos and they were made to perfection. The service was great and they definitely gave service with a smile. We actually ate in the dining area. I usually get my food to go, so it was nice to have time to sit and enjoy our meal. The dining area is clean and well lit. Manager said he was busy and can't take care of everyone! What!!!! I saw the reviews and thought i would try it. Bad move... i called and made my order with the manager or owner and ordered the chicken bowl and asked if they make wet burrito and he said he would. So I said would you wet a carne Asada nachos instead of a chicken burrito as I have the bowl. first time coming here and I was impressed, so much so that I decided to take the time to create this review... I initially had the idea that I would go here, pick up a few tacos, take them home, eat them, and that would be it, but NOOO! as a side note, I don't normally eat this kind of food on a regular basis, I'm glad that I decided to try them out... very tasty! from the first bite to the last bite... I went with TWO (2) carne asada street tacos and ONE (1) carne asada soft taco, it came out to $14 and some change, reasonably priced... the carne asadas weren't chewy, I liked that aspect of my tacos very much so... and the somewhat spicy sauce that you can add (it comes on the side) is not overbearingly hot, it's spicy just enough so that it enhances the flavor(s) that are already inside the tacos... I almost feel like this was (intentionally) "fine tuned" in the creation process (with a lot of thought and trial & error) rather than carelessly & nonchalantly made and thrown in there... it's a very clean restaurant, there's a lot of room inside to sit, there's a nice sounding speaker setup that plays Shazam-worthy music, they cook right out in the open behind the counter (as if they're not hiding WHAT they're making or HOW they're making the orders)... I found out who the owner is... he was the one who actually handed me what I had ordered even though there were other workers around... he didn't have one of them do this seemingly (overlooked) easy task, NO! he chose to do it himself... from simply offering me a plastic bag to then some napkins (plural) to then securely tying the bag for me (very simple hospitality gestures) to sprinkling everything with a genuinely positive welcoming attitude, this place is very much worth my time to let others know what's out there, and in this case it's Taco Kabana... I noticed something when I had paid with my card... I get to the part of the transaction screen prompts where I get the option to add a tip, you know, the "suggested" tip percentages, a custom exact dollar amount option, so on & so forth... well, the owner quickly turned (before I could even precisely read what was on there, but I got the gist) the iPad checkout screen thingy away from my view and turned it at an angle to where he could see the screen and bypass having me select any options at all, as to not draw attention, very smooth, very slick... I caught that though, he wasn't interested in squeezing out every last dollar that he could get out of me, kudos to you Mr. Owner... although the things I mentioned don't APPEAR to be BIG positive contributing factors, when you take EVERYTHING into account you have something nice that you can share with others... I had been craving a taco salad and ordered the Mexican salad with pork. It came with sides of a lime, a side of guacamole, a white cream sauce, some chips, and some hot sauce. There are a few chairs on the side for you to sit on while waiting. My order came out shortly afterwards and I was told about the array of different sauces on the counter that you could add to your meal. My heat tolerance is high so I should've added some hotter sauce than I did. Now I know. My salad was delicious, the pork was tender, and the portion was large. Life certainly is better with a warm lunch at Taco Kabana. Strolling hungry does makes thing interesting especially when you have errands and are on a time constraint, Taco Kabana on Bishop Street thankfully has taken care of that. A simple layout as soon as you walk in is the counter attached to a simple kitchen partially covered with their menu is beautifully placed and clearly written with ingredients listed is a definite plus as you can clearly see and decide while you're in line. I went with the Burrito Bowl which includes your choice of meat (steak, chicken, pork, fish, lingua, veggies), pico, salsa, cheese, sour cream, lettuce, beans and rice. My Burrito Bowl I got was with pork no beans and asked if I wanted hot sauce (of course!) I did get some kind of green sauce which was absolutely delicious and just added more to the dish. Dining here does have it's benefits as a decent amount of tables provided is great and on each is a bottle of hot cause and a roll of paper towels...my kind of thing woohoo!! Finding good Mexican food in Hawaii is tough and unfortunately my search continues. The flavors in this quesadilla just weren't there. Chicken seemed plain, lots of cheese and some lettuce. Who puts lettuce in a quesadilla? The portion was large so if you're starving it's a decent meal to fill you up, but it doesn't taste like a real quesadilla. Location is great though, right downtown if you need something quick and portable to go. I was disappointing to find so many pieces of steak in my chicken quesadilla because I don't eat beef. Unfortunately, my first visit here wasn't the best. I usually bring lunch from home, but my coworkers recommended this spot, so I decided to give it a try and placed an online order. When I arrived, the restaurant wasn't busy (I was the only customer there) but I didn't feel very welcomed by the staff member at the counter. While that didn't bother me much at the time, it set the tone. I confirmed my order with him and asked if I could dine in, and he nodded. A few minutes later, I went back to purchase a bottle of water. The same employee was on the phone and spun the payment terminal toward me in a pretty rude manner. Again, I brushed it off. However, when I opened my food, I realized I had received the wrong order. I went back to the counter and was helped by a different staff member who was polite and quickly corrected the mistake. That part I appreciated. But then the original staff member returned. After the other worker explained the situation, he came over to my table and asked if I had touched the sour cream and guac (which were in a separate container). When I said no, he reached into my plate with his hands and took the container without saying a word. I was confused and a little shocked. I wasn't told those items were extra or that they weren't included with my order. There was no explanation. That kind of interaction really threw me off, and I honestly lost my appetite. I only ate about a quarter of the meal. For me, customer service matters just as much as food quality. Unfortunately, this visit left a bad taste in more ways than one. That's why I'm giving this place a 3.5/5, based on both the food and the overall experience. read more

Replacing Aloha Salad's location in town, Taco Kabana is one of my go-to spots for lunch. Their authentic Mexican food is greatly appreciated by me and my colleagues, my favorite is their Veggie Quesadilla, which is made fresh to order. The staff is always so polite and hardworking, the wait times can get a little bit long during lunch time, so plan accordingly. You do have the option to phone order which is great to cut down your wait time. They do keep the doors open so it may get a little bit warm if you're planning to dine in, something to keep in mind, especially during long wait times when the small restaurant is filled with people. BIC closed and now theres no good mexican offerings in the immediate downtown area, so i decided to check out taco kabana. i'd seen it when it first opened but never ventured across the street to actually get anything. i got the mexican salad with chicken. it was good. chopped up chicken thigh with some cheese melted on. all on a bed of lettuce with more cheese and some pico, sour cream, and a pretty plain guac. menu said it came with salsa too but i didnt get any. and it came with just a small handful of chips. i ordered when i got there and sat down and waited, right in front of the kitchen area. they take your name so they can call you when the food is ready, but no one called me when my order was up. or if they did, they did it so quietly that i didnt hear. because after a few people after me got their food, the guy behind the counter asked what i was waiting for, and low and behold, it was already sitting up on the counter in a bag. i would go back simply because theres no other place i can think of that has mexican in downtown. the food itself is pretty fresh and tasty, though their guac could use some work read more

I'd love to leave this place 0 stars. I saw it had decent reviews so I placed Uber eats order. I ordered a simple chicken burrito with no cheese or sour cream and a side of guacamole. $22 later I get my delivery and I open up the little bag and I'm faced with a guacamole packet premade that you get from Costco a homemade salsa and a burrito that fell apart. I'm pissed off I paid extra 3.50 for a guacamole side that was from Costco. Nonetheless the burrito tasted so horrible I took 2 bites and threw it in the trash.
