Absolute garbage. Food was cold. Potato oles were old. $20 for 4 tacos and a potato one. Don't waste your time.

First, I t's in a very spacious building in Dell Rapids, with a very warm and welcoming staff! The Mexican food is just so good! We always have fajitas and they are just the best we've ever had! One thing that immediately caught our attention was the building itself. Dell Rapids has a great deal of historic charm, and the restaurant is housed inside one of the town's older historic structures, which gives it a lot of personality before you even sit down. The atmosphere carries some of that preserved small-town character that makes these Midwest road trip discoveries enjoyable in the first place. The presentation of the food was honestly quite beautiful. The plating was polished, colorful, and thoughtfully arranged in a way that immediately raised our expectations. The dishes looked refined and carefully constructed, almost the sort of meals that make you instinctively reach for your phone to take photos before eating. Unfortunately, the actual flavors never really lived up to the visual presentation. That was the biggest disappointment for us. While everything looked appealing, most of the dishes wound up tasting fairly flat and underwhelming. Nothing was outright terrible, but very little had the depth, seasoning, or distinctiveness we were hoping for once we actually began eating. Service throughout the meal was decent enough, though the restaurant seemed somewhat overwhelmed at the time. There was a very large and extremely loud Friday gathering taking up much of the dining room and seemingly most of the staff's attention. It also appeared they may have been somewhat understaffed that afternoon, which likely contributed to the slower pacing and divided attention. Overall, the experience landed somewhere between average and slightly disappointing for us. Not actively bad, but not especially memorable either. The historic setting and attractive presentation certainly added points, but ultimately we left feeling underwhelmed by the food itself.

But they nailed it on this Sunday! Would have thought I was back at home this place was delicious . The margaritas were beautifully crafted, the table side guacamole lady is hard to find and so refreshing, she nailed it, so good. Each dish was delicious, Sioux Falls is definitely lucky to have this quality Mexican restaurant. Well done Plaza Azteca.

By that point I was already seated and committed, but that's something I wish I'd checked beforehand. Because of that, I intentionally ordered something that would come out hot. Wasn't about to order a salad or anything that didn't need to be cooked. So I ordered the fajitas with chicken, steak, and shrimp. You know how fajitas are supposed to come out sizzling on a hot plate? These didn't. They weren't cold, but you could definitely tell everything had been sitting back there for an extended amount of time. They didn't taste fresh at all. And it gets worse. Every time I've ordered fajitas with cheese and bacon anywhere else, you get solid melted cheese and crispy bacon. Here? Runny cheese sauce and bacon that had zero crispiness to it. The whole thing was a mess. The meat portions? Ok the pieces were cut up small. I was picking through all the vegetables and onions trying to find actual pieces of chicken and steak. A lot of peppers and onions. The Verdict: Plaza Azteca was a miss. The margaritas were decent but the fajitas were a lukewarm, runny, disappointing mess with small pieces of meat. Combine that with odd service and some concerning health reviews, and this is a two star experience at best. Won't be going back.

We were both in the mood for Mexican, this was very close and the ratings looked good. The bar looked impressive as we walked in and after we were seated, we started with 24oz Margaritas (see picture) to accompany our free chips, salsa & white sauce (see picture). While the Margaritas were quite large, we both commented that they seemed a bit weak on the alcohol (or it is possible that they used Reposado tequila with less flavor). My wife decided to order the Combo #2 (pork tamale, ground beef enchilada & ground beef hard shell taco - see picture) while I went with the street tacos - Carnitas (pulled pork), Pollo (chicken) & Al Pastor (spit-roasted pork). We both enjoyed the Combo, with my favorite part being the pork tamale. I'm a big fan of corn tortilla street tacos and found them all to be very good - but my favorite was the Al Pastor. A quick Google search indicated that Al Pastor is a spit-roasted pork influenced by Lebanese shawarma - marinated and then cooked on a vertical rotisserie. This carmelizes the edges, resulting in a savory, tangy and slightly sweet flavor. Whatever the science...I found it delicious! If you found this review helpful, please Share, Follow & Like.
