If it's not bite-sized, it's not happening. So I played it smart and went with the trusty burrito bowl--this time with steak. And let me tell you, that was the right call. That steak? Tender, fresh, and seasoned exactly how it should be. No surprises there... Taco Mama doesn't really miss. Birmingham staple. Always crawling with kids and teens, especially at The Summit. My go-to dinner is the chicken quesadilla. You can add anything from the 'toppings' section into your quesadilla. I usually opt for some light black beans and light corn. I specify light because too much topping it there and your quesadilla can fall apart! The staff here is always very friendly and always bustling around. Taco Mamas operate very smoothly. My hack: order a Chipotle Ranch on the side. Perfect for dipping quesadilla in. The line at The Summit is nearly always out the door. It moves fairly quickly, but I would still expect to wait a bit. Dare I say... I think Taco Mama makes the best margarita in town. They don't use any of that sour mix that other places do, so the margs aren't too sweet or syrupy. I'm open to suggestions if y'all think there's better out there. It's watermelon margarita season right now. This place is packed, family-friendly, fun, but can feel stressful at times. Not to mention the parking lot. This was my first time trying taco mama. I made the mistake of going right at lunchtime and the wait to order was a little long. There was a young gentleman named Zach that was outside, assisting the customers and was very polite and helpful. The restaurant is quite loud in my opinion. I felt a bit overstimulated even just waiting for my to-go order. The staff were working quickly to get all the orders out promptly. I got the Alabama redneck taco basket, and it did not disappoint! So very tasty and tender and full of flavor. The chips are light and thinner than the ones you typically get at most Mexican restaurants. I really enjoyed them. Went to this place based on a local recommendation. Yeah it's all cool looking and in a nice mall. How is the food though? Well I had the mayor tacos with a side of salsa and queso. I always like getting salsa because you can tell a lot about restaurant from their salsa. Well it wasn't impressive. I tasted a hint of oregano which I have no idea why anyone would want their salsa to resemble Italian sauce. Not the first time but don't get it. Second, the queso was lackluster. Very plain and needed something to make it kick. Would recommend having a premium queso with meat, avocado and a signature hot sauce. Now for the tacos. Ehhh is all I can say. The margarita was the star of the show - your standard frozen margarita but delivered in every way you want it to! The tacos and chips were typical texmex style, I enjoyed the quac. The only downside is the location, the surrounding area didn't seem very safe. We were there around 6 and ended up getting to-go boxes and leaving before finishing in order to get back home before sundown. read more

Took my sister here for a quick lunch last week. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the sunshine. But we had such a good time talking and eating that I forgot to take pictures of our food! I had a steak burrito bowl with queso fresco, jalepenos, black olives, onions, rice, and corn. YUM! My sister had the Cheesy Beef taco basket with chips, salsa, and queso. DOUBLE YUM!! We ordered The Mayor and a Orange Fanta for my son, I got a Justice is served with grilled flounder and a Pomegranate margarita and my husband got a Ah Tuna Si with a Mama's Salad with Shrimp & Lime Cilantro dressing and a especial Modelo . You order and then sit down they bring you your food . Pros-Food came quickly, Everything was seasoned well, Everything was SUPER fresh! The Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette was very good(Bottle that ya'll), The Pomegranate Margarita was good (3-4 on buzz meter) Drinks are 2 oz. Unless special requested(most places are less so that was a good surprise) Employees on the floor were attentive and asked if we needed anything, food came fast! Cons-Was loud(we couldn't hear the cashier and she couldn't hear us, I ordered corn tortillas but received flour, I didn't receive my slaw that came with my meal, The chips were a bit salty (still good ) just we are not used to salted food) , salsa was a bit thin (but good) Gets crowded super quick( we were there maybe 30 min from opening) (did progress quickly once inside) Asked for the tip at the start. Ate here on Friday, May 31st... got 2 tacos... steak & fish. I told my friend that something was off about the fish taco, but I didn't think much of it at the time. It wasn't until maybe an hour later my stomach started to hurt and I had diarrhea for the rest of the day. Very, veryyyy disappointed in this restaurant. When I first walked in it was super busy so I was a little worried about the wait time, but my food was brought out within 10 minutes! I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and the La Playa margarita with a sugared rim. The margarita was perfect and tasted like lime, coconut, and pineapple. Very fresh and tasty! The shrimp in my quesadilla was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Also, you can get unlimited toppings in the quesadilla! I ended up going with cilantro, grilled onions, and queso. Okay Mexican food and margaritas. What's not okay is the incredibly complicated process for getting said food and margaritas in the first place. As in stand in line for something like twenty minutes, order from the counter, move to the next counter to pick up your booze, and then go back to your table to wait for your food. I really enjoyed Taco Mama! They have a ton of margarita flavors which is awesome. The margaritas are $9 each or $22 for a pitcher. We got a pitcher because we figured we'd buy 2-3 drinks so money-wise it was worth it. In reality...a pitcher is really big for just 2 people! I love that majority of the toppings are free to add (even guac!!). Because of this, I basically added everything to my burrito, and it turned out super yummy!! My date really liked his steak quesadilla as well and he isn't a huge fan of Mexican food. We got there around 6:10pm on a Friday and the line was out the door. I was concerned because it was blazing hot outside, but the line moved pretty fast. Plus, a worker will order your margarita for you so you can drink it while you wait, if you so choose. We didn't do this because we didn't want to hold a pitcher. The only downside is the space and noise level. This particular location is always crowded but they do an excellent job moving the line and seating you quickly. If you're taking your meal to go, try to call and order ahead so you can skip the line. The restaurant is always very clean as are the bathrooms and the food is always fresh. We really appreciated the generous serving of meat in the tacos and chips. The Cheezy Beef tacos had a perfect balance of juiciness and flavor from the meat as well as freshness from the vegetables. The chicken in the Mayor taco was also flavorful and paired nicely with the complimentary chips and salsa. Who doesn't love tacos? Never eaten here so thought we'd try it out last night. I got one Classico beef and one of The Sizzlin. I ate the Sizzlin first which was steak and the Classico which was ground beef second. I thought the Classico was better only because 1. It was seasoned much better and 2. It wasn't extremely messy to eat. The chunks of avocado on the Sizzlin were to big and the steak was cut into medallions. Would have been easier to eat if both were chopped smaller. oh well.
