My husband and I randomly stopped in because he felt like tacos for lunch. We didn't realize it was also a Tuesday which means buy 2 tacos, get 1 free. Yay!! Of course, we each got two tacos and one free taco. The place was packed with construction workers, which was a great sign. They have a pretty diverse selection of tacos that run the gamut from traditional to more out there. I, the seafood lover, got the shrimp taco, dorado taco, and the signature taco. My husband, the traditionalist, got the chorizo taco, al pastor taco, and lengua taco. We dug all of the authentic tacos, though the lengua lagged a little behind the chorizo and al pastor. While not at the same caliber as what you'd get out west, they were absolutely solid and way better than what we expected from a random Chicago taco chain. My shrimp taco was also wonderful with a really generous amount of perfectly cooked shrimp inside. The dorado taco was very good as well. I'm pretty sure they could put that chipotle stuff on everything, and it would be good. The signature taco was the only loser of the bunch. It sounded good in theory, but the pineapple made the taco entirely too sweet (and I have a sweet tooth too!), and the cheese and bacon made it too heavy. Not our cup of tea. To go along with our tacos, they included complimentary tortilla chips and access to the very nice salsa bar. We had a lot of fun trying all the different salsas. I had only had Taco Maya from Uber Eats previously but my boyfriend and I decided to dine-in. The dining room isn't much to look at - it sort of reminds me of the inside of a Qdoba or Chipotle. You pick out what you'd like to eat and order it up front, then they bring it out to you on a lunch tray. I was surprised it was sort of a fast-food atmosphere because their food from Uber eats always felt restaurant quality to me. I've had the enchiladas with green sauce multiple times and have never been disappointed. My boyfriend had chorizo tacos that were good too. Their queso feels pricier at $9-$10 but you get a lot, and it's a queso blanco. I was impressed by how good it was. The tacos are seasoned well, and they have a nice salsa bar with maybe 6 different salsa options ranging from mild to spicy (plus jalapeños). DEFINITELY try the avocado salsa, it was mild and a bit sweet and so yummy. It was a great compliment to the grilled chicken taco, which may have been my favorite combination. You order and pay at the front counter, and the staff gives you a tray with a number and a dish of chips and salsa, normal for this kind of menu selection. This is a really cute spot right off State Street in River North. The restaurant is super clean inside, bright, and inviting. When we entered the restaurant, the staff immediately greeted us and handed us menus to order from. We decided to take our food to go, and ordered the protein bowl/salad, a burrito, and a few tacos to try. The food came out quickly and the staff was kind enough to give us chips and salsa while we waited for free. my favorite part of this restaurant is definitely the salsa bar. There are about eight different salsas to try and they are all fantastic! The creamy jalapeño avocado one is to die for if you like spice. Stopped by this afternoon and was quite satisfied! Many different types of tacos to choose from along with burritos, tortas, enchiladas, or fajitas. I ended up going with their specialty tacos (the signature, Cajun blackened shrimp, and chicken tinga). They give you an option of flour or corn tortillas. You can also make it into a meal with rice and beans but 3 tacos was more than enough for me. They also give you a basket of complimentary tortilla chips and salsa with each order! Love that they offer different deals each day of the week. Will need to come back on Monday for $4 margs. I highly recommend going on Tuesdays though since you get a free taco when you buy 2 and they have $5 michaeladas. They have a salsa bar with 5 different types of salsas that added a nice touch to the food. The jalapeño and verde ended up being my favorite. The Rice was viciously bland and incredibly 1 dimensional, ive truly had white rice with a greater sense of depth and flavor than this. the black beans were just that, just a pile of black beans, no seasonings or any additional ingredients besides the beans themselves, like opening a can of beans and sticking your fork in them to grab a bite before you actually begin to create a dish. But Unfortunately those issues pale in comparison to the worst part, which was the tacos. I ordered ground beef tacos and when they arrived I saw a mountain of a mashed up red colored substance masquerading as beef and I just knew this wasn't going to end well. but I cleared my mind and took my bite at which point my heart immediately sank. the meat tasted closer to sloppy joes than anything resembling the wonderful flavor profiles of the Mexican people. Truly I tell you that after my first taco I didnt want to continue eating as it would be an insult to my digestive system to process any more of this insult to my people. if you are Caucasian you may have a pleasant experience, because you may have created this same meal at home, but if you know what Sazón is, I would recommend trying a different establishment, or maybe just don't get the rice, or the beans or the ground beef. The Flavoring is not great and I feel I can make it better at home. The empanadas were super greasy and almost burnt like. Corn elotes was basically tastelessness. While the food was delicious (5/5), there were a few key things that makes my review for Taco Maya a 3/5. My friend and I decided to get tacos to take to the Lakefront and have a little picnic. We came in and it took a very long time for one of the workers to come and take our order. The worker that did take our order was not even wearing her mask properly. She had the mask right under her nose, which defeats the purpose of wearing one. We waited a very long time for 2 tacos each! As we were waiting, I saw the same worker who wasn't wearing the mask properly the first time, change her mask to a blue surgical mask, but fail to put that one on properly as well! I have tried several items from this place as I live close by and I will say that the flavors are not bad, however their tortillas are hefty compared to content stuffed into them. Best taco place. I've had taco maya more than a few times. I typically order the two taco plate which gives you the option of two tacos and a side of rice and beans. For beans, you can choose between a side of black beans or refried beans. The beans are served in a mini tostada bowl. The red rice contains peas and carrots. A side of chips and salsa is given as a free appetizer. The salsa is served warm and is quite spicy (but very delicious). You can ask for free refills on the chips and salsa as well. Taco maya also has a separate salsa bar with many options. I tried majority and was not disappointed! Many vegetarian options are available here. When available, I order the falafel taco with contains hummus, falafel, and shredded lettuce. I also enjoy the paneer taco which is topped with jalapeño mint sauce, grilled onions, and cilantro. Another one of my favorites is the shrimp taco which contains chipotle mayo sauce, lettuce, pico de gallo, and avocado. Today, I decided to try a new taco known as the chili potato taco which contains queso cotija, sour cream, and cilantro. Warning: this taco is quite spicy.
