We stumbled upon this restaurant while walking along the Riverwalk on our first day in Chicago and decided to give it a try. I'm so glad we did! My friend has a gluten allergy, and the manager went above and beyond to ensure the kitchen was aware and that her meal was prepared safely. He even checked in with us during our visit to make sure everything was okay, which we really appreciated. We both ordered the lunch special, which included two tacos, rice, and beans. Everything was delicious and very satisfying. The atmosphere was relaxing, with outdoor seating along the water. This place is a major tourist trap and expensive but I'm all for it. Ordered a 2 taco meal for $16 (that comes with two tacos with nothing else). That's $8 for each street taco (slightly bigger than a street taco but still). Amazing taste though, their carne asada was well seasoned and nice quality steak while their pastor was a little cinnamon heavy but still a great bite and flavor overall. Their tortillas were very good though...a make or break for a lot of taco spots for me. Come by for a snack or if hungry be okay with spending $50 for a few tacos and chips. read more

This restaurant was kind of a bare-bones experience where we ordered at the counter and carried our food to a table, but we were tired and hungry so we just made do. Although there might have been a restroom, I didn't see one so we weren't able to wash our hands before eating. The food was tasty but unremarkable. Had a summer fun day along the Riverwalk and downtown and decided to stop by Taco Rio. The tacos were really good, just a little pricier than usual since it is downtown. The crowd was great, the views were beautiful, and there was plenty of seating to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. They also had a restroom available, which was convenient. The views of this location are top tier... can't beat a Riverwalk experience with a Margarita (and semi) good food. To start, the service was spectacular - the guy making our Margarita gets this Yelp Review more points. Thank you Margarita bartender man! Now the food, I would say the fries were pretty good size, nothing crazy just some waffle fries you can get anywhere else. The tacos, same thing, very mid, nothing too crazy. I would say... Horrible place. Food sucked. Got two Beaf tacos and a veggie. The Beaf was so fatty I had to spit most of it out. I ordered on their site bc they practically force you to. Very confusing. Couldn't figure out what I was doing. Came with no sour cream which I thought I ordered as an add on. Told the kid who bought my food. He said you didn't order it. I said I was confused can't I just give you the 50 cents and get one. He said " No". I said you can't just give me one I'm willing to pay ? He said " No". I said then get me a manager please. He came back a couple minutes later and said here, no charge. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas for $56 , never came. We went up and they said oh we forgot. After walking around Chicago we came across Taco Rio on the Chicago river bank. We figured we would give it a shot. I ordered the Chicago Dog and some tacos. Both where filled with a lot of favor and spice. The service was fast and friendly. The outside dining along the river was relaxing and enjoyable. Great views of downtown Chicago. Outdoor seating with some covered spaces. Self serve water station. Halfway clean bathrooms. Key code for bathroom door. My spouse had the shrimp nachos and they were massive. I could not have any due to a shellfish allergy, but she said they were amazing. I had to steak tacos on flour tortillas with onions and cilantro, and they were great. We didn't notice until later there was a sauce or salsa station they don't really help you out with that. You just order at the table and they bring it out when it's ready. Had to wander around and find the silverware napkins as well, but it was fine. They do have some alcohol selections. For what we got, the price was steep, but it's also Chicago when you were paying for the downtown river views. It's all good. read more

The service was OK. The person that took my order was very confused and had a hard time understanding my request. The Taco Al Pastor was sold out so I had to settle to order a chicken taco instead which was not my first choice. The location was perfect being on the river, providing great people watching and a nice breeze. The guacamole and chips were very tasty with a lot of crispy tortilla chips and a substantial amount of guacamole. The Chicago dog had tomatoes, mustard, onions, pickles, relish, celery and sport peppers which added a substantial spicy kick to the traditional Chicago dog. A little too spicy. The Right Bee Semi Dry Cider was refreshing with a cup of ice. The prices were expensive, which is to be expected while in downtown Chicago. read more

This place of course has the best views being right in the riverwalk. This is a perfect spot to grab a bite to eat and drink and chat with a date or friends - especially when the weather is nice. I will say that when I went the line was pretty long and it took a minute for the food to be ready so definitely prepare for that. The drink line was separate from the food line as well just an fyi. The drinks were just okay & the tacos were decent + everything was a bit pricey but that kinda comes with the riverwalk spots. read more

My friends and I stopped here on a Saturday evening. We found a seat fairly fast, although it was busy. You place your order by using the QR code on your table. I have mixed feelings on this. The website platform was majorly lagging and was taking a ridiculously long time to load so ordering and paying took us awhile and a few times I thought we might just give up and leave. However within just a few minute of placing our order our food was at our table. It was incredibly fast. We all got tacos and they were really good. They were packed full of meat which is nice because sometimes you go to places and they really skimp. It's a nice place to sit by the river and enjoy some tacos and people watching. read more

I'm sitting here right now. Food is meh, music way too loud and the "margaritas" are basically straight lime juice over ice. A pitcher of margaritas was $60. My husband and I choked down the extremely sour pitcher and neither of us thinks there was any tequila at all in the entire pitcher. I'm so sober I could drive a school bus right now. There's also an automatic surcharge on every order, and the food is overpriced to begin with. I loved this place a couple of years ago, but it's really changed and I won't come back. I had two shrimp tacos that were just okay (nothing memorable), though I will say the Agua Fresca was delicious and worth a try. What left a bad taste was the happy hour confusion. The sign clearly said Monday-Friday, but the staff told me it's actually Monday-Thursday and didn't honor the posted specials. For a place in such a prime spot, the details matter. Mediocre tacos + incorrect signage + slightly overpriced = a 3-star experience for me. Great for a quick drink with a view, but I'll keep hunting for my go-to Riverwalk taco fix. read more

Taco Rio is hands down one of the best hidden gems in Chicago! Coming from a Latin background u know I had to try the tacos here in Chicago.The vibe was warm and welcoming -- casual, colorful, and full of life. The staff was super friendly and patient while I browsed the menu, and they even made a few great recommendations. Now for the food -- absolutely delicious! I tried the carne asada tacos and the al pastor, and both were packed with flavor. The tortillas tasted fresh and homemade, and the meat was juicy and perfectly seasoned. The salsas added just the right kick without overpowering the taste. Portions were generous and prices were really fair for the quality you're getting. Solid place to grab a bite to eat on the Riverwalk! I'm appreciative that there is a Mexican restaurant on the Riverwalk proper, and that it's pretty good. Otherwise reasonably priced Riverwalk restaurants are mostly overpriced burger-and-fries type offerings, with a couple exceptions. I recently tried the veggie tacos and I thought they were great! They had a ton of sauteed veggies (mushrooms, peppers) and even potatoes in it. They were tasty and super filling - also love that they had corn tortillas and not just flour tortillas. It was super easy to order and pay via the QR code at each table - very efficient to have the table number associated with the order. They have some salsas near the front and plenty of space both shaded and not. Will definitely be back. read more

Not impressed at all. The wait is not worth it! There are so many other restaurants along the riverwalk that are probably 10xs better. The food was mediocre at best, cheese tasted weird. I would not come back here. Plus, the people in this area are a little bit *classless* Someone really tried to fight me over a table (lol). read more

Came here recently for a snack and drink while on vacation in Chicago. The setup here is really cool, brightly colored outdoor space right on the river walk. You walk up to order at one truck, they give you a buzzer and you go to another cart to get food. Their menu has everything you'd expect, tacos, nachos, and margaritas. My husband and I got the margarita flight and an order of chicken nachos to split. Prices are kind of steep, the flight and nachos were $85, this includes a 15% service charge. The margs in the flight were generous, 10 oz each and we got all three margs and the paloma which were all very tasty and decently boozy. The nachos were solid, I appreciated the sturdy chips that did not disintegrate under the toppings. You mostly pay for the vibes here, which are pretty good, I'm sure there is better Mexican food elsewhere but this is a nice stop on a sunny day. read more

The taco was filled pretty heavily with meat, but still not worth the $6 that it cost. It was tasty, but nothing special. The corn was really tasty, but super hot and also not necessarily worth $9. The food took pretty long to be ready when the place wasn't super busy, so I can't imagine how long it would take if it actually was busy. You do get a 20% coupon if you kayak with urban kayaks next door which makes the price almost worth it. read more

I used to walk by and grab food And a frozen drink once a week or so. Because I live close by and walk my dog by it every day. This year not only did the food change to terrible quality but the prices went up AND there is a surprise surcharge automatically added at the end. So an 18 pina colata now costs 25 dollars with all the fees and it was not even that good. The drunken bean is right around the corner with a better pina colads for 11 dollars, same size. They are going to lose regular business and customers quickly if they dont reassess quality, inflated prices and hidden charges. read more

Taco Rio was listed as one of the best restaurants in Chicago for food and drinks. I stood in line for about 45 minutes. You place your order at one window, they give you a buzzer to notify you when your food is ready and if you want to buy a drink you have to go to the next window and place an order. The drinks are made while you stand there. I ordered the Pollo tacos and the street corn. I wish there was a option where you can mix the three taco up, but you can't. I also tried to just order one taco and the guy told me that I had to order three. I ordered a strawberry margarita. It was good not too strong just right. I loved the street corn. After finishing the street corn, I was only able to finish one of the tacos. They offer to-go boxes, you have to ask for them. There is no indoor sitting. They do not take cash. read more

La Paloma cocktail: 4/5 (too much ice, couldn't taste the alcohol but it wasn't overly sweet) Carne Asada taco: 0/5 (flavor is there but overcooked and dry) Crispy fish taco: 0/5 (no flavor, no salt) Elote: 0/5 (corn-on-cob with seasoning and cheese on top; tasted wack) How do you make a taco with no flavor?!?! Their sauces are also trash. Lacks flavor. Overpriced for nothing. $7 for 1 damn taco?!? I guess you are paying for riverwalk views. Can't believe I wasted $31. The cooks need to be fired, retrained, or just shut down lol. I don't know where these "positive" reviews are coming from but something isn't adding up. The overall look is pretty and colorful.
