First the service. Everyone was very nice. Food arrived before i could finish getting salsa! I thought that was cool. I ordered the giant taquito, a crunchy chicken taco and a potatoe taco. The potatoe was beef. Not a fan of beef. The taquito was made with breaded chicken breast. I tried to like it but was definitely expecting shredded. And the taco was made the same way. Breaded chicken strip inside a crunchy shell. Not a fan at all. I dont remember them ever serving chicken that way. I always liked how fresh it was. But not tonight at all. We have been going to Taco Mesa in Orange and Mission Viejo for well over a decade. It was our favorite spot. However, the recent menu changes make me a sad girl. Many of the unique and interesting items have been taken off the menu and the vegetarian options are reduced. The menu has, in my opinion, been given a very whitewashed and boring facelift. The salsas are still bomb. I appreciate that they still focus on healthy ingredients and the employees are always so kind. I have not been to Taco Mesa in years and I actually forgot about how amazing their food was! I love the cool murals on the walls and the overall chill vibes. All the staff are nice and their chips and salsa are amazing. The food tastes very authentic! I ordered a veggie quesadilla and I'd love to see them make it more like fajitas with bell peppers and other veggies because it was pretty bland. This spot usually has a line out the door and every table is full. It's a casual spot, and family friendly. Patient and kind service explaining the portion sizes and flavors. The chile relleno itself was huge, stuffed with meaty cheese and more of a stewed-tomato sauce/topping than red sauce. The pepper itself was a little more firm (underdone?) than I've usually had it at many other spots before but the flavors were on point. And big scoops of rice and beans accompanied it. The shrimp taco with corn tortilla was really good. The tomato soup also good and tasted like a cheesy tomato soup - not the typical basil-tomato-y soup you might get with a grilled cheese. Decided to try this place since it's my friend's favorite taco spot. I thought it was really good. It's definitely on the pricier side, but good enough that I'd come back if I didn't live so far. I got two tacos; steak and fish. I wish I got a third! They were quite good. My only real complaint is the horchata. It was super grainy and had a coconut-like texture that kept getting stuck in my teeth. I think it might have been the tiger nut. It also tasted a bit bland. I guess I prefer a more traditional horchata that's sweeter and milkier with the rice. On a positive note, I liked what they had to offer at the salsa bar. read more

My favorite sides are the coleslaw, carrots, and the green salsa. I love their horchata but today it was a bit bland imo (bad batch probably) The interior is so beautiful hand painted and just clean. We've been loyal customers of Taco Mesa for several years and have consistently supported this neighborhood business by recommending it to family, friends, and neighbors. That's why this experience was especially disappointing. I understand that Cinco de Mayo is one of the busiest days of the year, and longer wait times are expected. However, our order took significantly longer than usual, and we noticed several customers who ordered after us receiving their food first. When I politely approached the owner to check on our order, his response was condescending and unprofessional. What made the situation worse was that he spoke to me in this manner in front of other customers and employees. Rather than addressing the concern respectfully, he was dismissive and even stated that he didn't care if he lost our business. As long-time supporters, this interaction was disheartening. They're located in the Los Alisos shopping plaza on the corner of Trabuco and Los Alisos Blvd., near Auto Zone. Plenty of parking is available in the shared lot. I called in my order to go, and it was ready within 10 min. Upon arrival, I was surprised how large it was inside. There were lots of tables inside and quite a few outside as well. The employee on the phone and the one who gave me my order were both very friendly. I ordered 2 crispy beef tacos and 1 crispy chicken taco for myself, 3 soft shell carnitas tacos for the hubby, and guacamole & chips to share. The Taco Tuesday special is $2.50 per taco and there are 7 options to choose from. You can also add rice & beans for $2.50. The chips & guac are $8. They also offer margaritas for $5 or 2 margaritas to go for $14! The crispy tacos were definitely crispy and amazingly non-greasy. I preferred the chicken to the shredded beef, but they were both good. I was full after 2 tacos so hubby ate my last one. The chips and guac are amazing! The chips have a little seasoning on it - I think it's paprika. The guacamole is absolutely delicious! They give a generous portion of both. I will definitely return in the near future! read more

I'm glad I was wrong because this place was pretty good. We came here on election night right before the crowds for dinner. Came here mainly because we saw taco Tuesday specials on yelp and thought we should give it a try instead of driving too far away. For $2.75 I got three tacos, the crispy chicken, Al pastor, and the fried fish. All were pretty decent. I like the green tortilla they put it on. The meat was pretty good. They had 3 choices of salsas, one green, one orange and an Arbol chile one. The salsa had really great flavor, but the only negative to say was they were not spicy.
