"Fried Pork Empanada" very dry hollow and salty
    Mariah J.

Worst empanadas I've had. They were nearly hollow, over salted, no seasoning... just meat and cheese. Very greasy. Rice and Beans were good. Soggy nachos with barely any guac.

    FLAN!

It's one thing to be in the ghetto of a major city and land some authentic cuisine...it is quite another to be in the armpit of the northeast, and stumble upon a seriously authentic experience! My first clue, yelps help. Solid reviews. Upon entry, the entire staff is of Mexican descent. Finally, they make errthing fresh and in house. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that the owner transitioned from food central, San Francisco, to God knows why....this shabby city! He is dishing out delicious, albeit subtle flavors. To the untrained palate they may say bland, but it's there, and it's amazing! In conclusion, GET THE FLAN!!! Made fresh in house. I would put it against any I've had my entire life. Zivali!!

The menu is a little confusing as it fails to let you know what you can true get and I had to ask a few questions to get what I wanted.

Come Mother's Day and I am not a fan of going out on the actual day, but I did remember this place. We made a Saturday reservation, picked up my son from work, and headed over here. SO WORTH IT! I thought the spot was adorable and clearly well loved by locals and their own staff. You really get the feeling that all that work there really love the place. I like the menu items are not the "usual suspects" I see at most Tapas places, which are good but sometimes you want to shake things up. We got: Bolas de queso Patatas Aioli Croquetas De Jamon Croquetas De Verduras Solomillo De Ternera y Queso Cabrales Calamares Fritos Tabla de Quesos Pisto Manchego Albondigas De Cordero Iberico Peras Borrachas Torta De Chocolate All the menu items were flavorful and enjoyable. I think my favorite was the Croquetas De Jamon, if I had to choose just one item. We also decided to get two desserts - a pear dessert which seems to be their signature dish and the chocolate tort. While the pear was lovely, I was really in the mood for something chocolate so I enjoyed it more (but honestly cannot go wrong with either).

The MOST welcoming and friendly staff that treats you like family as soon as you walk in. I enjoyed my staples for the night: Jamón Iberico, garlic Chicken; pollo al ajillo (a must), and a red sangria. The jamón is freshly cut to order with a nice drizzle of pure olive oil over top. The sangria is so refreshing with fresh fruit tasting like they just picked it themselves. The lovely bartender, Astrit, informed me the grapes are Grenache from Spain , which have a dryer, robust flavor compared to the sweeter red sangrias that make you regret your decisions the next morning and tastes better in my opinion. I'm usually more of a beer guy but this slaps! I've also had the white before and that also hits the Richter scale. Last but surely not least, the garlic chicken (pollo al Ajillo) is the best chicken I've ever had, hand to God. Spiced with everything nice and delicious oil and garlic that you deserve. Even on a first date, you'll be kissed after giving this to your significant other. This fine establishment is one of my favorites and I always am satisfied, leaving with a full belly. I hope the same for you!

I suggest going slightly before or after lunch peak to get in and out faster. I also suggest getting it to go since seating is limited. The service has always been friendly and as quick as they can be. Speaking some Spanish can make the interaction go faster. This is some of the most comforting comfort food around.

I started going there about 10 years ago, moved away, and returned recently. It doesn't bother me much to go down there but it is unquestionably in one of the tougher parts of the city. The place is very small and very clean. There is probably room for 20 at the few tables. Parking is out front or on the corner. The food is in a large steam table and you can view it, decide what you want, and either sit or get it to go. It is pretty standard, rice accompanied by a meat and essentially sides. I am pretty sure you can get as much food as you want and they will just charge you accordingly. a feast can be had for under $7.50. To the food....Not being Puerto Rican I will do my best to describe each dish they have and compare it to what I know authentic should taste like. Arroz con Gondules, yellow rice with pigeon beans is my favorite. Their yellow rice varies from day to day. Sometimes plain yellow, sometimes with pinto beans. You can get white rice as well and always request a side of beans to eat with your rice. I am not sure if they use alcaparrado (olive caper salad) in their rice but it is very very good. The main dishes change daily but many things they have every day. There is chicken, beef, ribs, pork chops, sometimes pernil (pork shoulder), maybe an ox tail dish?, plantains, salads, etc. I sometimes see Pegao on a plate. Pegao is the crispy tasty treat that comes from the bottom of the rice pot. I have never had it there but I have seen it. They also have spicy and mild Pastelon? which are meat filled pies, similar to an empenada. I like the spicy myself. I also see alcapurrias? which I think are taro or rice balls filled with meat. Make sure that with whatever dish you choose that you request plenty of the sauce. That is where all the love is. You have more than a few options for Puerto Rican Food in Worcester but my choice is Spanish Grill.

For the main course I got mofongo with creamy chicken. It was bland and the modongo was hard and dry. The cream sauce reminded me of Alfredo, but it was on the bland side. The chicken within it was dry and tasted like microwaved chicken breast covered in white sauce. Would try something else next time. My fiancé got the ribeye and that was cooked to his liking with good seasoning and very tender. The server was very nice, however very slow. Had to go up to her and flag her down multiple times throughout dinner and especially when we were trying to get the check. I had to keep reminding her because she would come then leave "to get it" but then went behind the bar and was talking to people. Then would come by and ask if we needed anything, and after the fourth time it was very annoying.
