The store I worked at today suggested we get Taco Star, I personally have never had it the 3 years we've lived in Colorado Springs. I'm disappointed I haven't tried it until now, but so happy I did! Keep in mind that this is a fast food restaurant with a few other locations in the area. They get your order to you very fast, so don't expect gourmet, but do expect a decent meal with large helpings! I love their enchiladas combo because they also give you a whopping amount of beans and rice and the red and green salsas give if a good amount of spice. I'll add a pic of those next time I get them. The carne asada fries are eh. It doesn't really taste like carne asada because the meat is super chewy and rough. Maybe they just cook it too much? But I've had them several times here and as a carne asada fry connoisseur, these just aren't up to par. There's no flavor in the meat at all and some pieces were so chewy I had to spit them out. I do love the horchata, so there's a point. But I wouldn't say the fries are worth a $17 meal. Try a different menu item! Also be aware that this is right next to a gas station and I've seen a lot of people experiencing homelessness around. The Taco Star that I frequent, is the Airport and South Circle location. I think the receipt prints out a different name, "El Burrito"? But the signage on the building is Taco Star. I mention this specifically because I've been to a few other "T S" locations in the Springs, but the one that consistently out does them all, is the one mentioned off South Circle Drive and Airport. That said, .... I can't rave enough about the food, not to mention the cleanliness of the restaurant itself. I almost always order my "Go-to", a soft shell carnitas taco, which is served with two corn tortillas because the delicious filling is so ample that one tortilla won't contain it all when eating. Their meats are generously seasoned and the carnitas taco is generously smothered with pico de gallo, though recently they've omitted the tomato, which is fine with me because it has less moisture, thus allowing the robust flavors of the cilantro and onion to meld into the meat. Visiting Colorado, I live in California looking for real, authentic Mexican food . So difficult in the springs to find. I drove around, stopped at Fuzzys, what a joke of a "so called" Mexican taco and burrito shop. I left after looking at their menu. I guess you can call it "white Mexican food", no thanks. This location is absolute garbage. The staff is very rude. For the third time in a row I've tried to ask for extra red sauce at the window and the drive thru employee closed the window on me while I was still talking. He completely ignored my request. This place used to be my guilty pleasure before the pandemic. They have lowered portion sizes and gotten my order wrong the three times I've been there since. The first two times were back to back and you could tell the cooks had changed. The food was awful, especially in comparison to how it used to be. Skimpy protein in every item. It was a normal late night, working into the evening and I noticed it was already 11:30pm. (most grocery stores were closed) A lot of my favorite places have gone way down hill for late night food, so I was hesitant to head out and see what I could find. A friend told me to try the Taco Star on Woodmen. I got the Quesadilla and a Supreme Burrito with no onions. I haven't stopped talking about these burritos since! So much food, incredible service and friendly people even later at night. The drive thru is a bit tight for bigger cars so don't be afraid to take a double turn into it! So we came in here tonight 1/25/2020 as we were extremely hungry. We ordered $45 worth of food & gave a generous tip. Our daughter, who uses a wheelchair, does not chew food. We have to blend ALL of her food. We do this EVERYWHERE we go since 2007. We have never been treated like we were just treated. Taco Star is slightly more expensive than other local taco shops, but they are open 24 hours, and $3 for a carne asada taco sounds a lot more reasonable at 3 AM. But the prices are a small thing to complain about; the food really is good. After a night of drinking, there isn't a bite in the city that compares to Taco Star's la lengua taco. If you don't know what lengua is, don't ask (at least until after you're done eating it), just order it and go! Taco Star has become increasingly ironfisted with their little cups of red and green salsa recently. I like to smother my tacos and tortas with half a dozen salsa cups, but this is no longer possible, as they will stingily give you a maximum of two salsas before charging you some ridiculous fee to get more. I have been living in another state for the past three billion years and haven't had authentic Mexican food in ages.My husband and I tried to go to one restaurant which was closed, then another which didn't have my pickup order after waiting an hour, so we decided to try Taco Star. My husband got the carne asada burrito and rolled tacos with guac and cheese. He really enjoyed the rolled tacos and gobbled them up like they were his last meal. His carne asada in his burrito was a little chewy but it normally is anywhere I have had it. I ordered the carne asada fries. They were delicious. Fries were shoe string style and hot. The entire styro container was full of fries and then sour cream, guac and carne asada meat was completely covering the fries. I sometimes think, "how can anyone afford to give away that much meat and still make money". I don't actually want to know the answer to that question because it was delicious.
