Since I've last visited this place there has been a change in ownership. Along with that change in ownership was a much expected price increase across all items on the menu... but what I couldn't have anticipated, was the drastic change in service. At the time I visited with my boyfriend it was not by any means busy. There were plenty of open tables for people to sit and the folks behind the counter didn't appear overwhelmed with orders. For a simple order of 5 tacos and a quesadilla, we ended up waiting almost 45 minutes. I was set to leave but my boyfriend really wanted to eat here so we stayed. I asked a few times for an update as I witnessed folks who walked in after we had ordered, get their order before us. Not once, but twice. The staff is not nearly as friendly as they used to be and i'm just not impressed with the way things are running under the new owners. read more

Tortillas are decent. Veggie burrito meant mostly rice burrito today for some reason. Beans are good, the few I got. If you ask for a cup of ice, that will be $5, wth?? Wild. The torta de asada I got was yummy and i liked the sauce it had. staff just handed it to me since it was to go and didn't offer me sauce or anything so i had to ask and i only got a little cup lol. Service was weird, also need to consider i went for lunch hour so it was super busy .my coworkers got tacos de asada and asked for all the toppings and they didn't put anything on their tacos which was wack and unfortunate when we got to our office. The vibe was cute and i really liked that it had the little disc player. It was pretty warm in there and stuff y tho, no open windows so i suggest asking to open windows or opening them yourself if you eat inside. One of the best places to get good burritos in the bay. Their wet burritos is delicious if you can handle a bit of spice. My personal favorite is the wet burrito with chicken and green sauce, hits the spot every time. The price and portions are also very reasonable. The staff are very nice and patient. They are generous with the salsa! There is usually a bit of a wait during the lunch and dinner times so keep that in mind. But it's worth it. Parking can be a bit hard due to the corner lot, but there is also some street parking available too. read more

Not bad. I came here for a taco fix. I ordered three; one asada, one pastor, one tripa. I asked for the tripa to be cooked longer so that it's crispy. The place is clean, service was friendly. As for the tacos, the fix was met. But, unfortunately the tripa was not to my liking. It wasn't crispy. Flavors were okay. They added toppings as well. I really want to like this place, which is why I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. But unfortunately, every time we come, something is off with our order. We usually order for about five people, and without fail, there's always an issue -- missing ingredients, missing utensils, or something just not prepared correctly. This last time, parts of the quesadilla didn't even have meat inside. Little things add up too, like having to ask for limes every single time, or being told they can't give extra ice because they don't have cups available. The food itself is okay when it's made right, but the consistency just isn't there. At this point, you have to double-check your entire order before sitting down and be prepared to get up and ask for the items that should've been included. I'm not writing this to bash them -- I genuinely hope they improve -- but attention to detail and order accuracy really need work. read more

Tacos are just ok. But they are fine. The burrito was terrible. I got a super burrito and they put so little salsa, sour cream, just everything it was dry and flavorless. I didn't bother to finish it. We even took burrito up to counter thinking they forgot to put any of the stuff on it. Good luck finding it. Had 2 bites of a carne asada burrito and then opened it up. Meat was sparse,gristly and flavorless. Main ingredient was bland rice. Stumbled upon this place after going to get gas from Costco. There was no wait time and the woman at the counter was so nice! She let us try the different sauces as I don't like spicy and wanted to try them. We got a wet burrito, a carne asada burrito, and a carnitas sope. They were delicious! The meat was perfectly cooked and the sauces had the perfect amount of spice. The sope was our favorite as they made it with cheese that melted in your mouth. The asada tacos are delicious. you can order as many tacos as you want. No free water. Either you buy a bottle one, or order soda or their drinks such as the delicious horchata. If you order the soda bottle, be prepared to use a short straw or chug it, no cups available. The ambiance is very casual. The flavors here are excellent and the location can't be beat - perfect for a quick, delicious snack before/after Costco or Sigonas. This is the first Grullense I ever been to. The tacos are amazing. I usually order one taco de pastor and two sopes de pollo con todo salsa verde. My favorite agua es de piña and also jamaica. If you don't like spice food don't get the red salsa! My go to is always the green salsa. You can't go wrong with green salsa. read more

I used to really love this place/location! I was obsessed with their tortas and would finish one in a heartbeat cause it was that delicious! My bf and I went back yesterday and ordered our usual. Unfortunately, the quality has gone down and it tasted really bad that we couldn't even finish it. I've been to this place since early 2000's. It's still legit. You can tell because it looks exactly as it did as back then and the tacos are still delicious. Asada tacos is recommended! El Grullense has many locations throughout Redwood City area.  This location on Middlefield rd. is  one of my favorites. Sure, you may save 50 cent per taco possibly at a taco truck. It's hard to find decent Mexican food in the Bay Area after growing up in SoCal. This place does a decent job. I suspect it's the Tapetio sauce they put on their tacos, which gives it a nice flavor boost. The meat appeared precooked though as opposed to fresh grilled. read more

Meant to go to the one by the Mobil gas station on 5th avenue but came here by mistake but it was a good mistake! Stopped by on a Tuesday evening and was happy to see they were open late. They take card and Apple Pay. I shared a super burrito with my friend and I got a pastor taco and cabeza taco. The super burrito was pretty standard, but I wasn't a huge fan of the lettuce inside. Between the pastor and cabeza taco, the cabeza was much better. The meat was tender and fatty, while the pastor meat was tougher to chew. Food took about 10 minutes to come out. Every time we visit the bay we come here for the tacos but lately the gals at the register are assholes they always have an attitude with customers when ordering (especially with older people-from what I've seen). I kindly asked the person for 2-3 extra sauces and she said they already gave us some with the order. I confirmed and told her that we had asked to purchase additional but they told us to request more later. She said she had to ask the person in charge, comes to be the individual who took our order........gals talked right in front of me and than said "NO because we can only give the minimum per purchase/order", Seriously......... WTF !!!! So you actually told us earlier that we can request more with the order and now "you don't sell it and you don't give out extra sauce". This is my favorite taco place to go, especially right before/after Costco (right across the street). It's a ritual for my Costco buddy and I to come by every time we grocery shop at Costco together; we usually grab it to-go and eat in the Costco parking lot (lol). Tacos El Gruellense has a couple other storefronts, but I think this one is the best. Their parking lot is limited and so is their menu. They offer you usual basics - tacos, sopes, torta's, burritos, and quesadillas. Note that some of these items come in regular/super and you may need to request additional add-ons like guac, sour cream, etc. My always go-to that I've recommended to friends is their tacos - you can never go wrong with al pastor and carnitas! I used to go to this place when I had a studio around the corner. Like Gordo's on Clement, I didn't fully appreciate just how good it was when it was on the way home. I don't know about you all, but I enjoy walking into a restaurant that is owned and operated by people indigenous to the food. There are just a few English speakers, but if you live in California and can't speak enough Spanish to order food, you ought to watch some Youtube videos to brush up. I wear my gringo badge of honor in places like this. What's funny is when I say pollo, the lady says "Chicken?" and I laugh. As a Korean-American, one of the most jolting experiences I ever had was when I ordered Korean food in Koreatown in LA from a Hispanic woman...who spoke functional Korean! Certainly crossed up some of my perceived notions. So there are some reviews here that are low rated based on service or some dish like wet burritos...who goes to a Taqueria with a grill to order wet burritos? Those perfectly oily corn tortillas fresh off the grill with crisply diced onions, cilantro, and that tongue-stabbing salsa. I have no love for tripe, but I was once persuaded to try the tripitas taco here. The tripe is crispy and oily like bacon with a little bit of gameyness. I order it every visit now. The carne asada is solid, the pollo is good, although I wish they could make it a little less well done. The al pastor has a ton of flavor as well. Parking can be an issue sometimes. It gets really busy at night. The spots don't have a whole lot of room to back up, especially to the side near the dumpster. If you have a nice car, I'd suggest parking on the street or at Costco across the way. In any case, I think this place is a gem that serves some of the best and inexpensive tacos in Northern California. Brush up on your basic Spanish, head down to El Grullense and try ordering dos, tres, quatro, or maybe cinco tacos if you are feeling particularly hungry. read more

We moved to this area about a year ago and noticed a bunch of these places scattered all across the neighborhood. Curiosity got the best of me, I was craving Mexican, so we decided we'd finally give one of these spots a try. This particular establishment is located across the street from Costco, and right next to a small grocer. There's a decent handful of parking spots so we didn't have any trouble finding one. Upon walking in, the place is packed! There's ample seating, and nearly every table was taken by customers. Had to be a good sign this place would be awesome! Placed my order, the husband and I both wanted wet burritos. Sadly at 1:40pm on a Sunday, they no longer served wet burritos (out of the wet mole sauce). So we each got a super burrito (I got tongue, husband got the beef head), and the total came out to $16. We found a table, but it was covered in leftover food and smears. The floors beneath us weren't any better. There was hardly a wait, got our food piping hot in under 5 minutes! And oh man the burrito size was epic, it felt like the size of my face! Sadly the taste was just not up to par. The burrito innards were extremely mushy and bland, the meat wasn't very tender or flavorful, and not even some salsa could save the lack of taste and texture. The pickled carrots and peppers were also not great, tasted a little off and old. Our friends ordered tacos and said they were okay. Not bad, but not anything great either. They paid $15 for 6 tacos and a bottle of coke. Needless to say I didn't come close to finishing my burrito. Not wanting food to go to waste, my husband asked the ladies behind the counter for extra aluminum foil. The first staff member pointed to the girl at the register and walked away. The girl at the register stared at my husband, gave him some side eye, and proceeded to ignore him. Finally someone came out the back to see what my husband wanted before finally handing him a sheet of foil that was right next to the girl at the register. Between the less than mediocre food, the messy venue, and the unpleasant customer service, I don't think I'll be back, at least to this particular location. read more
