I am very happy to see authentic street tacos, but authentic isn't always executed well. Unfortunately for this place, it's executed poorly. As usual, I always try a huge variety of items to see what's what. I was extremely happy to see them serving up tripas and buche. I tried their tripas, buche, carnitas, asada, al pastor, barbacoa, and lengua. The best item was their buche, and even that wasn't all that great. It was cooked perfectly, but really lacking in flavor somehow. The tripas, crispy, was a complete disaster. It was like hard and burnt. When it's hard like that, it's no longer crispy. It's crunchy. And what I like about tripas is that soft texture inside when it's done well. Not these. They really sucked to eat. The asada and carnitas were very boring and almost dry. Lengua was okay. Probably second best, behind buche. Al pastor and barbacoa were okay too. When the problem is that the flavor isn't there, then it's a pretty big problem. They didn't provide any salsa whatsoever. Who eats street tacos with no salsa? Not me. It's almost offensive to serve tacos with no salsa. Overall, I want to give 1.5 stars. I guess I bumped it up to 2 because they had buche and it wasn't awful. Anyone who thinks these are good example of Mexican street tacos has not had a good Mexican street taco. Yes, it's better than Torchy's and taco bell. No, it's not better than almost anywhere else serving street tacos. read more

Living in San Diego for over a decade, it was SO easy to get spoiled by great Mexican food especially Carne Asada burritos and fish tacos. Ever since I moved to Denver, I've been DYING for some great Mexican food. Finally found what I've been looking for here. Their fish and shrimp tacos are absolutely amazing! The quality of the fried fish and shrimp combined with the white sauce and toppings makes it absolutely delicious! It is a little pricey but I would say that the taste justifies the cost. I'm a big fan of great Mexican tacos. This place is definitely a great spot for a quick bite that is full of flavor. My favorite taco was the Al Pastor which was like an explosion of flavor in my mouth. We also ordered the chips and guacamole with a variety of salsa from the salsa bar. Each salsa has its own little flare and wasn't too spicy. If I go again I think I would get all Al Pastor. The other tacos I ordered were the Barbacoa beef and the carnitas. Each had great flavor but the meat was fatty for the carnitas and the barbacoa wasn't as flavorful as the Al Pastor. Presentation was great and the interior is clean and has a modern feel to it. So let's be honest. The young cashier girls can be very rude. I get prices have gone up but $12 for a burrito and $5 for a water. You know their up charge is a lot and they making a lot of money. It's places like this that's not good for our economy. I will admit the food is good but not worth the price. The burritos shouldn't cost more than $7 bucks. Got a burger meal with a coke and fries for $11.59 at Culver's the day before. Do better. Stop and think of your customers instead of the money in your purse. Just wanted to also not the salsa bar was empty and filthy. You he girl behind the counter was rude and lazy. I asked for a manager and she said they didn't have one. Omg...........I'm in taco heaven. I'm from Baja and these are by far the best fish tacos I've ever had on this side of the border. All other tacos are very good specially the lengua and they also have a salsa bar and very delicious refreshing drinks like cucumber, guava, watermelon and horchata. Very trendy Mexican taqueria, so refreshing to see that it was not filled with multi color chairs and sarapes everywhere but instead the have a few black and white pics and plants along the wall. My only critique of this place is that it gets so busy that it makes it hard for the staff to keep it clean. Tables aren't cleared right away. However that won't stop me from coming back and trying the pozole. read more

Tried the Al pastor tacos no pineapple and dry and not flavorful at all, carnitas was also disappointing as it was also dry and lacked flavor had to hit it with a ton of salt and lime. The fish taco surprisingly was actually pretty good and so were the salsas. I also tried tripas bien doradas and they tasted burnt and over done. I didn't eat one of my pastor and one of the carnitas not because I wasn't hungry anymore just the food wasn't good. Paid $40+ for 10 tacos and a coke overpriced and very low food quality. read more

Unbelievable fantastic flavor! I ordered the El Pastor and the Barbacoa tacos and they were amazing. This place was recommended by the Doubletree hotel and he said he knew the best place for tacos and that the El Pastor meat was 'the best' and he was 100% right. Ok so don't be expecting some fancy sit down restaurant that you have elite servers waiting on you. You walk up to the counter order, you can sit,stay and eat there or go. Ate here for the first time today and it was OK. I've been looking for a new taco place to try and I actually found this on Yelp so we decided to try it out for dinner. By the time I got my food home, it was cold so that sucked. I only live ~ 6 min away so I am not sure how that was possible unless it was sitting out before I picked it up. The cheese in the quesadilla was already hard and cold, and even the cheese that's all the way at the bottom of our carne Asada fries wasn't even warm anymore. I am really glad that the woman behind the counter asked if I wanted some packages of salsa because if I didn't pick up any salsa, I think the tacos would have been pretty dry. The avocado salsa was actually really good so I suggest topping your tacos with it! The carne asada fries were pretty good, but they definitely did not taste as amazing as they looked. The were fries topped with some sort of melted nacho cheese, steak, guacamole, and pico. Again, once I got it home, it was cold so it just didn't taste very good. Maybe I would've had a better experience if the food was hot when I picked it up. All and all, the staff was friendly, location was super accessible, and the have indoor seating which is great, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. Wow, I'm happy we gave this place a shot! In the midst of a 3-day burrito craving, I turned to Yelp. I happened upon Tacos El Metate and was instantly intrigued. With high expectations, I placed a to-go order. My partner and I ordered two burritos (El Pastor and Carnitas) and a "small" (might as well have been a large) order of carne asada fries. Everything was fresh, extremely flavorful, and high quality. We finished all of the fries and ate only half of our burritos, which we are super excited to eat for lunch tomorrow. I've been watching the construction progress for many, many months and was excited to see Tacos El Metate finally open! The Boy and I stopped in for lunch. The Good: A wide selection of tacos offered from seafood to pork to beef to more exotic offering like tongue and tripe. Definitely the nicest interior I've seen in a street taco joint - very clean and modern. The gal at the counter was patient while we looked over the menu and friendly. I very much enjoyed the seafood tacos (I tried one fish and one shrimp) and the Boy loved the salsas on our tacos and quesadilla. I liked the fact that they used fresh mexican cheese and fresh tortillas to make the quesadilla. The Not-So-Good: The meats we tried today were uniformly overcooked - the Al Pastor, the Carnitas, and especially the Barbacoa, which I couldn't even finish because it was so dry. The chicken in the quesadilla wasn't dry but was very bland. If it hadn't been for the salsa it would have been flavorless. My son was craving street tacos and we came here for the first time, not knowing what to expect. We looked at the reviews and one guy said it was dirty and the food was bad. We found it to be the complete opposite! We were surprised at how extremely clean it was, and a little hip ...and food was amazing! We were going to go to tacos and tequila but I'm so glad we went here because their tacos were just as good and we probably paid a third of the price. My order got miscommunicated, my fault I'm sure, but they were really nice about correcting it. My son and I had giant Mexican cokes. I ordered the cameron burrito online for pickup. The site for ordering was easy to use, and have me an estimated time for pick-up. I got to the restaurant and got my food, salsa, and limes. When I got to my burrito to eat, it barely had anything in it, leaving a lot of extra tortilla to which it collapsed at the top. The burrito wasn't terrible tasting, it was actually good, but the extra tortilla wasn't doing it for me. Stopped in today and were not disappointed. The food was really good! The only downside is there was no "kids menu" and when we had to ask if we could just get a small cheese quesadilla for our son (we didn't want to waste food) it took the girl working the register to ask multiple people if this could be accomplished. Being from Texas I am always skeptical of any Mexican food in Denver but my stomach was happy. Unfortunately there was a couple of things missing. No queso, no flan, no real chips and salsa. We ordered chips and salsa and they gave us a basket of chips and an empty small cup. They told us to fill up our cup at the salsa bar. That was disappointing but the chips were good. We also ordered 6 different types of tacos and they were all delicious. Good small size, decently priced, about $2.50 each. I really liked the tortillas. The restaurant and restroom were both clean.
