Now This Is A Burrito! We have been going to Tacos El Norte as part of our regular dining out rotation for years and they never disappoint. The ladies behind the counter and also serving are super pleasant and friendly, always greeting diners with a smile, a warm Hello! and Sit Wherever You Like. I am a burrito fan and after this visit I had to post this. Burritos come three ways. All three come with a flour tortilla, filled with chicken or beef, lettuce, tomato, not too many beans and cheese for $8.99. You can also order it as Burrito Suizo Especial which also includes guacamole and sour cream, then topped with a ranchero sauce and melted cheese - our favorite way for $12.40! And for those that are super hungry, try the Papi Burrito Especial for $12.99. A mega tortilla wrap that comes out looking like a ranchero and cheese topped football. Onions and cilantro can be added by request to any of these. Large condiment bottles of homemade red and green sauces are brought to the table and use as much as you like. I prefer the green as the red is just a little to spicy for me. As my picture shows, the regular Burrito Especial is huge and we order it so we can bring home half to eat the next day. You know this place is the real deal and priced right when you see the volume of carry out business they do at dinner time. Burrito fans - give them a try.

Although the waitress denied new ownership, there were several changes at this location. First they serve liquor. Second the salsa greatly improved from subpar to above average with spice to boot. Third the plate was huge in all proportions and tastes excellent! And the beans are more blended pinto style that totally refried. And excellent service! This location went from the worst of this chain to right up at the top!

A nice little spot to grab some Mexican food. We were able to sit outside and enjoy our lunch. The carne asada was very tender and had an excellent flavor The rice was solid and the beans were okay. My friend enjoyed his steak tacos. He gave it an 8/10. Friendly service.

We arrived at 6:20 (website says they close at 7), and the dining area was fairly busy. We were rudely told that we could not eat in as the server was cleaning and done taking tables. I confirmed 7 pm close time, and she still wouldn't seat us. I would not recommend this place. If they want to close 40 minutes early, they should update their website.

My son, daughter, and I stopped by Tacos el Norte today for an early lunch. We have always gone to there for a good Mexican meal and have always been happy. Heck, I've gone to Tacos el Norte all over the metro area while I was traveling with work. However, the McHenry location seems to have gone downhill recently. Are they under new management? Today they charged us $40.00 for a late morning lunch for three. I've never liked the way they bill; you do not receive a check at your table, you walk to the register and they ring up your meal items individually. The first time they charged $35 and change, I asked if she was sure because it seemed awfully high. Then another lady came by and re-rung it, it came to $36 and change. I told her she was going the wrong way. Then the manager came over and literally asked me, "What's the problem here." I told her that her cashier's were ringing too much for a meal for three people. The manager apologized, then proceeded to ring me up for $40.05. I told her that was ridiculous and she started going line-by-line with me, showing how they nickle and dimed every item. At that point I told her not to bother and that, while we were regular customers, we will not be returning - EVER! read more

Been eating here long time and the food is good but one problem is when you order steak on your taco or burrito it's not really steak, it's taste like cheap beef stew meat or a roast. This place would be on top if the used skirt or flank steaks chopped up instead read more

This is our go-to local Mexican food place, and they never disappoint. The chile relleno burrito and tilapia fish tacos have become favorites for my wife & I. The food is as affordable as it is tasty. We tend to stick to our "regular" orders, but I've never had anything on their menu that wasn't good. One of the things that might surprise you, from both the nature of the place and the locale, is that they have several vegetarian options, in case that's your thing. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants; not just around McHenry...anywhere. We've been going here for about 10 years now and the food has been terrific. There's a wide variety of traditional mexican dishes to choose from, each with its own strengths. I generally get the torta or burrito suizo especial. You can put any type of meat in it ie. ground beef, chicken chorizo, steak, etc. The tacos are great too. Simple with lettuce, tomato, and cilantro, again, any type of meat. The service there is always first rate. You never have to wait more than 10 minutes while they prepare your food right in front of you. With Taco Bell just down the street, people really need to wait that extra 3 minutes for real, delicious mexican food. I would definitely recommend to others, and I have. read more

Excellent, fresh, mexican food. What can I say, just go there and eat... Its my first choice when the need arises for mexican food. The service is fast and very friendly. Never had a mix up with food and we've placed some huge orders there for work and not once any mistakes. Because we all know what its like to get back to the office during lunch and find out someone got screwed for lunch. Not this place, not once. I've tried just about everything on the menu from chicken taco salad to the chiles rellenos ( my personal fav) and its all been very very very good. Excellent authentic Mexican food! There is a Taco Bell right down the straight and I pity those that can't wait the extra five minutes to get the real deal from this place. It is not a very big place, but there are some tables inside if you want to enjoy your meal there. The service was fast and friendly. As soon as I walked in the door, a gentleman came out of the kitchen greeting me before I even made it to the counter to order. The menu is pretty extensive covering pretty much every kind of Mexican dish I could think of, including a breakfast portion. This was my first time there so I was struggling a little bit because everything sounded so good, but the guys working there were very helpful giving me some recommendations. I ended up with the Burrito Suiza Especial with Carne Asada. I also ordered the Tilapia fish taco because I wasn't sure how large the burrito would be. That ended up being totally unnecessary as the burrito was huge! I only finished about half of it along with the fish taco and that was a perfect amount of food, and then I had leftovers as a bonus. The burrito was delicious, with melted cheese over the top, definitely the best I've had in the area. The fish taco was also very good. I washed it all down with some tasty horchata which was perfect. The prices were very reasonable as well. I can't wait to go back and continue to try out other things on their vast menu. The best mexican food in McHenry County! We've never had a bad experience here. All their food is great. My personal favorite is the steak tacos, but their nachos are also delicious. The nachos are huge so I usually stick to the tacos, unless I'm splitting them. All their food is authentic. Also their chicken soup is the best. Highly recommended ! read more

This place, although in a strip mall next to a pawn shop, has really great food and fast service. The burritos, enchiladas, chicken tacos, and rice are authentic and my kids (who are picky)love it! Great food, great service and great prices! We come here a lot for our Mexican food! read more

Prices were much higher than the menu online, and the food was not all that great tasting. I've never had flautas with double taco shells that weren't deep fried. Odd and not tasty. read more

Very very very good Mexican food!! People were sweet. Food came out fast only reason for knock off of one star is the horchata is very good it has a little to much cinnamon and the guac is great but don't like that it's not chunky it's very pureed otherwise will be back! Way better then Sophia's Mexican. And better pricing!! read more

Ate here for the first time in about five years, take out. All of the food was fantastic! I think this was the first time my wife did not have to add extra salt to her guacamole. I had the shrimp burrito, which was very fresh and not packed full of filler like most burritos I get. Other people in our group had various tacos and the chips and salsa. Everyone commented on its authenticity and taste. The only reason for the 4/5 was the wait. Was told 20 minutes on the phone, ended up being well over 30 minutes. But it was worth the wait! read more

What this place lacks in ambience it makes up for in food. This is clearly the most underrated place in McHenry county. It's nestled in a rather generic shopping mall, but good lord the tacos, salsa, and sauces are out of this world. Make this a stop on your list, your taste buds will thank you. read more

I get that Cinco De Mayo is probably the busiest day of the year but that is no excuse. Today my party ordered many things ranging from entrees to burritos and sides like rice. I went to go pick up the food and tried to pay for the some of the meals separately and the attitude I got was unacceptable. They were rude and took a phone call while I was trying to pay because they didn't want to deal with the separate checks. So after that fiasco of getting my food, I get back to distribute the food and nothing was labeled. Everything looked the same and even better they forgot 2 meals!!! That was bad, but then the food was not even warm and my burrito was watery. Definitely would not recommend on Cinco De Mayo or even on a good day. My service will be brought somewhere else. read more

The food is decent though the selection is limited. You'll get your typical steak, chicken and pork tacos but nothing more exotic than that. No carnitas, no chicharron, no lengua, zip. This is about as whitebread as it gets for folks that don't care too much for truly authentic Mexican food. Employees were pleasant enough. Prices are a bit steep for the selection and quality. Well. The food is extremely bland. Had a burrito and the Lebanese Mex gf had the taco dinner. To begin, the service is great. But that's where it ends. Considering I'm from Chicago, I have high standards. For all these mofos in the NW burbs who claim this is the spot to to must have bland palettes or think that Taco Bell is authentic. And I say this w much love. now, I have yet to have an amazing experience in regards to taco or mex fare out in the burbs. Please fellow yelpers, quit rating restaurants in the area so high and go to the big city and experience some real food before designating a restaurant so high. That is all. read more

Been going here many years with my husband and never had a bad experience. Their service is always fast & attentive. Food is always fresh, hot, fast & accurate. I have eaten here several times and have enjoyed the food. What I haven't enjoyed was calling in to place a carry out order. The woman who has answered the phone each time is very rude. They don't have a menu posted online and the woman was upset that I didn't know a detail of one of my orders. Customer service is not a priority. read more

This place gets really busy! However, people seem to be hunger-crazed and scarf down food quickly to free up tables if you're waiting. They have a nice countertop to sit at if you cannot wait, though. Service was absolutely superior and bilingual, which is absolutely essential to our community. The food would be good if it didn't always come out in a few minutes...I'm convinced they cook all the meat for your meal in the early morning, as it's always reheated and never piping hot..it's so disappointing that in the last few years at this location that they don't cook to order!! I've given them so many chances to do so and its such a disappointment that they don't..I don't think I can return to this location any longer which is a shame since I only live a few min away. read more

I love this place! I've been to 5 or 6 different ones on and off throughout the years. Guacamole Tostada, it's not on the menu so just ask for it. TO DIE FOR! I love their steak burritos but recently found the Chile Relleno burrito. It's way too good with all that cheese. They make great food cheaply here. Support them. read more

The restaurant is in the heart of downtown McHenry and next to the river. I highly recommend sitting in the enclosed patio. It's spacious, full of tvs, and has a nice view of the river. You can tell based on the menu and confirmed by our server, burgers are their thing. All kinds including beef, bison, chicken, turkey, veggie and fish, some choices are an up charge. The burgers come with a side, some have an up charge. Our server mentioned everything is made in-house. I feel it's a rarity of restaurants to made their food in-house so it made me excited for the food. Everything is reasonably price. I opted for the BFM burger and pickle chips ($2 up charge). The burger was juicy and well cooked. Their burgers are 1/2 lbs so it was big. The pickle chips were crunchy and really good. Portion was huge and worth the up charge. My lunch partner chose Cajun fries and they were crispy and flavorful. Our server was great! She was so nice! One negative, they allow dogs and many people brought their dogs. Since the space is enclosed, I did not like all the dogs while I was eating. It was tricky leaving since the hostess stand is located in the tight entrance and there was a dog right in the doorway. My lunch companion is deathly allergic to dogs. Luckily this dog owner was considerate and moved their dog so we could pass. Other than all the dogs, we enjoyed our meal and would come again.

this is an awful place to work they over work you under appreciate you and some nights you dont make minimum wage the food is over charged because they dont post on their menu the over charges they say extra cheese .25cents but they dont state thats per taco and .50 cents for sour cream also not specified per taco . there is ants all over the floor under the tables and the cashier margo is rude to the customers.poor management is a big part in the issues with this place. read more

I have been eating at Tacos El Norte since 1995! My dad used to bring home our family of 9 burritos for those quick dinner nights from Round Lakes location. The burritos were HUGE! Therefore fed our big family for cheap! The best part is they are SOOO yummy!! I am happy to see there is a location in my town McHenry too, and its STILL the same awesome food! So whenever I want GREAT mexican food you know where I will be!!! Hope they stick around another 20 years!! read more

Yum Yum YUM. The only reason why I did give it maximum stars is because it was a little pricier than I thought. I spent about 40$ for 2 horchatas, one appetizer and 2 meals plus tip. Great Food at low prices! Food is cooked right behind the counter s you order, so you know it is fresh. Try Burrito suiza....any combination and get extra sauce.....best around. Also best salsa....and that is saying something since there are plenty of mexican restaurants to choose from. read more
