    Not cooked in the inside

I came in because I didn't feel like cooking at home as I walked in the two workers were sitting in the tables i placed my order the cook got up want straight to cooking my food didn't even WASH HER HANDS I asked for fried fish it was cooked but had blood in it it tasted so nasty not ones have anyone came to asked if everything is good.

    Half Spatchcock Chicken Quartered

We were passing through from out of town and thought we would check this restaurant out. We were surprised at the size of the items they served. The restaurant appeared clean and had a nice salsa bar. The two people cooking was also waiting on us and did an outstanding job. I would return to this location again.

Enchilada toppings, separate from the order. Nice touch! Guac, pico and lettuce.

I'll preface by saying I ordered my food shortly before closing and maybe that contributed to the quality of food I got....but I don't think so. I ordered the chicken enchilada plate, a pastor burrito, and some tacos (1 chicken, 1 pastor, 1 carne asada) I paid $2 extra for 4 small containers of salsa. And the order came with a bag of chips. Chips - stale I tried one, no crisp, all chew, and I threw the rest of the bag away. Chicken taco - moist, basic flavor. Pastor taco - tender, juicy, flavorful Carne asada taco - omg overcooked, do not enjoy the flavor, ate 3 bites and tossed it. The meat was so hard and bland. Enchiladas- I love that they separate the toppings from the enchiladas themselves ::chefs kiss:: but the enchiladas themselves were unimpressive. Lots of bones in the chicken meat for enchiladas made it difficult to eat them without being very careful to chew slowly and feel around for potential bones. IMO, that's entirely too much brain work to just be stuffing my face. I wanted to give a new place a try and I'm semi glad I did because now I know, but I really could've gone without this experience and I will not be returning. I will say, the ladies working were pleasant but that's about all the good I had in my experience.

I made an pick up order on doordash to pick up steak fries. This was my first time ordering here. On doordash it says the steak fries comes with fries, steak, cheese, sour cream, and salsa. I went to pick up my order and opened my food at home to see that the fries came with guac. I am highly allergic to avocados, and on doordash it says guac is an extra $1.50. I decided to call the restaurant and ask for a new order, they said it was okay and they would make a new one. I went to the restaurant and they told me next time i should of put in the notes that i didn't want guac. I told them it was my first time and i didn't know. the girls behind the counter were consistently speaking spanish and had a dirty look. They had a security guard translate to me the whole time. I sat and waited for my order and the security guard told me that they ran out of fries!!!! asked if i wanted anything else and I just asked for a refund. I had to do it over doordash. Worse experience of my lifeeeeeeee!!

** The following review reflects my delivery experience DURING the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** As Jamie W. and I were made fully aware at last year's Cinco de Mayo festivities, 23rd Street in Richmond is chock full of family-run Latin American eateries each one likely drawing their own devoted followings. Jamie and I, for example, are pals of Portumex since the menudo they serve there is really good. This raging pandemic has offered a glimpse at other nearby restaurants that otherwise wouldn't have drawn our attention. That's due to delivery apps like Door Dash which treats all these spots on a level playing field. What drew me to La Selva was the $21 Pollo al Carbon. On the menu, they accommodated us uneducated, unilingual souls by describing it as "Whole Chicken Everything". It was an entire chicken cut up in eight pieces and accompanied by six flour tortillas; sides of rice, refried beans, and pico de gallo; and a paper bag filled with tortilla chips and served up with little containers of a typical salsa bar selection. In other words, it was a family meal for a relative bargain price much like my mom used to get at KFC when the empty bucket magically turned into a Christmas card holder. The poultry was surprisingly tasty. Not really succulent but the breast meat wasn't dried out as I was fearing. I got the impression they make these whole cluckers en masse, so we were happy it was quite edible (photo: https://bit.ly/2TSGaK3). The rice and especially the frijoles were quite flavorful though likely calorific if that's a concern (photo: https://bit.ly/2Xx9EOi). Presentation is not a strong suit here but flavor is as we ordered two of the $6.25 Super Soft Tacos with the pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, cheese having shifted around on its travel to our home (photo: https://bit.ly/2TEDMGm). For an extra fifty cents, Jamie had pieces of pork added to his, while I had yet more chicken added to mine. Sloppy was just not a big deal to us as our bellies were getting filled. FOOD - 4 stars...get the chicken with the fixings...get sloppy tacos at your own discretion AMBIANCE - n/a...a 'shelter-in-place' treat SERVICE - 4.5 stars...it came fast and warm TOTAL - 4 stars...you hungry?...come here! Carne asada burrito
    Lea S.

I found this place through one of my favorite food sites and was excited to give it a try! This place is on a somewhat busy street with limited street parking. The restaurant is pretty casual walking up to it and the interior is equally casual. The food site recommended the whole grilled chicken or "pollo al carbon" which we got and was delicious! We also got some different tacos, the carne asada was just ok though it's usually my favorite but the al pastor was very good! The burrito we got was ok, nothing super unique. I think in none COVID times they offer a salsa bar but during COVID just offered some salsa options. We got our food to go and it traveled fairly well. Overall if I were in the area I would likely return!

    Camarones ala diabla

Another disappointing delivery! But again, the food is really good. I called La Selva and remind them to be careful not to spill the sauce. A lady said that my food has been picked up by my dasher already and they always reminding there dashers to be careful handling the food and I can call my dasher to make sure. Call my dasher and remind him to be careful handling the food and he said, "no problem!" And this is what I've got...

Got the Pollo la Carbon, 1/2 grilled chicken. $13 Was very good as was the beans and rice. Could really been better if the served homemade tortilla. They have free chips choice of green or red picante sauce. No salsa fresca but did get some on my plate. You can get some pickled vegi, radishes or grilled jalapeno too. The decor is a bit odd with giraffes and elephants painted on the wall. The black panther statue I'll give them as there are some in south America. Guessing this was an African restaurant before. They have a nice little outdoor patio where the also grill the chicken.

    Guacamole with green food coloring
    Amy C.

Ordered the pollo al carbon meal added a side of guacamole. The chicken, rice, and beans were good, but the guacamole had GREEN FOOD COLORING! It was an unnatural shade of green that I noticed as soon as I pulled it out of the bag. Seems like they were trying to hide the fact that they extend the guacamole with sour cream or something else. So disappointing. I'm not sure I'd order from here again even though we liked the chicken, because it felt dishonest trying to disguise the guacamole.

That's the burrito and the rock / tooth disgusting

IN THE CHIPS: Kicking things off, the Chips and Salsa are now $3.85 for an order, but they were worth the money - light and airy, and the salsa just barely had a hint of heat to it. Just perfect. (5/5) THE BEANS.. Perusing the menu, whatever plate you order, you can specify the kind of beans you want (black beans, pinto beans, refried beans). I chose the black beans, but specified "no cheese" on them in a semi-futile attempt to stay on the healthy side. =) SEAFOOD TACOS I decided on the Seafood Taco Platter, where you get one shrimp taco and a fish taco along with a big side of beans and lots of rice. Each taco comes with a double layer of corn tortillas with grilled shrimp, or fish topped by shredded cabbage drizzled with a lime aioli. Instead of deep fried, the shrimp and fish on each taco were grilled to perfection, instead of deep fried. The fish filet was diced and stir-fried with a wonderful aroma. Instead of making a mess, I decided just to eat my taco by slicing and dicing it from the plate. Super good! It was more than enough food but we just couldn't stop eating because of how delicious it was! The sweet corn tamale was like a dessert, but paired with the tang and salt of the sour cream and cotija cheese it became a refreshing sweet and salty bite. It was a traditional corn dough and the texture was insanely soft, unlike most of the dry tamales I have had before. The pache tamale was truly the star. I had no idea what I was ordering, but I'm so glad that I managed to get this item in my order. The masa is made with potatoes instead of corn which gives it a smooth and melt in your mouth texture and a savory, addictive flavor. The pork inside is juicy and tender. Each bite is complete with the tangy pickled onions. The chuchitos were like the traditional Mexican tamales I am used to, with corn masa and stuffed with flavor and juicy chicken. The tamales are doused in a delectable red sauce and topped with cotija, sour cream, and more pickled onions. They were delightful. The garnachas were definitely the other star of this order. I had never had tostadas like them before, with flavorful and juicy chopped meat, salsa, and cotija. They are served with pickled veggies to add spice and tang, but what surprised me the most was the sautéed cabbage placed on top of each garnacha. The cabbage was so flavorful and soft, and despite all of the other sources of flavor it made itself known. The chile relleno plato was unlike what I am used to. Often, the chile rellenos my family eats are poblano peppers stuffed with oaxacan cheese, these were not that at all. In a way, this dish resembled more of a stuffed bell pepper, with a red pepper filled with chopped meat and veggies. I did get a piece of cartilage which made me a little wary when taking a bite but it was so delicious I couldn't help myself. The black beans it came with were flavorful and the dressing of the salad was amazing and reminiscent of a green goddess dressing. The service was amazing. The people were sweet and accommodating. I also really enjoyed the ambience even though I did order pick up. There are murals and bright colors lining all of the walls, giving the place a welcoming and fun vibe. Overall, with the amazing food, sweet faculty, and beautiful setting, it is impossible to go to this place and not feel an immediate lift in mood.
