This was our first visit to Tacos Gavilan. Here are some pros and cons. Pros: I had the taco plate and my wife had the egg burrito. I would describe both meals as competent. The rice and beans were good and filling. The tacos were small but there were three of them. The restaurant is very clean and has a lot of seating. It is in a good location. Pricing for the taco plate and for the burrito was reasonable by today's standards. Cons: I found the food to be somewhat bland. The salsa was mild. The guac was crushed avocado with little to no seasoning. The P.A. System was annoying. No one could make out a word that the cook was saying when he called out an order. It was loud and distorted. We were overcharged for the fountain drinks. We ordered regular soft drinks and were charged $6.95 each. I was seated before I discovered the overcharge and let it slide. So will we return maybe. This taco chain restaurant was pretty average to me. It has authentic flavors for Mexican food, and the texture of the various meats I tried (pastor, lengua, and chicken) was tender enough, but none of it really stood out to me compared to some of the other Mexican restaurants I've been to lately. This is a chain-ish establishment in that they have a lot of locations in So Cal, and we tried the Santa Ana location via Grub Hub. Our order was fairly basic, but they have a wide variety of delicious looking treats to try! We got a chicken taco, super mulita asada, super burrito asada, and cheesecake. They also allow you to order the entire salsa bar fixings with each item, which is awesome. (We did not order the jalapeños, but got them instead of our beans, which was sad, but ok I guess. We didn't eat them.) The chicken taco with onions and cilantro was delicious. I tried the green salsa and almost died. The flavor is so good, but it's spicy! Hubby tried the red salsa and said the same! If you like it spicy, these are the salsa for you! We do not, but the flavors were really good! They just killed our souls! Next was the super mulita asada. The only way to describe this dish is that it's a quesadilla that is not sealed and is fried? I have never had one, but it was delicious! What makes it "super" is the addition of sour cream and avocado. 5 stars even with how greasy it was and required almost all of the 5 napkins we got in our bag to eat it. The super asada burrito had beef, cheese, rice, beans, sour cream, avocado in a really nice tortilla. It was a lot of rice. A lot. I would wager 2/3 of the burrito was rice. I don't mind a good BRC burrito, but this was a lot of rice. I ended up having to open the burrito and take some out. The taste was nice, it was just too much rice. Finally, the cheesecake. Sadly, this was not the highlight of our dinner. It tasted like a weirdly failed flan. Not cheesy. Not creamy. Not cakey. Nothing good about this one, sadly. The food was good. This place is alright, and after ordering a few times, I can say its a solid joint that doesn't necessarily outshine similar restaurants and isn't my top choice for Mexican food. However, in a pinch, this place is not bad and it's really neat how they package the food, provided sauces, and other condiments for customers to grab on their own. The meat has been on the dry side a few times when I ordered for take out, and the flavor is alright with average portion sizes. The store itself is relatively large and makes it really easy for groups to sit down and stay together. I didn't really experience any customer service from any of the associates, but I also did place my order online and just pick up at the end of the register. Item ordered: asada burrito and an horchata Asada burrito was under $9 dollars and was pretty good. A good ratio of meat, rice and beans. Another great outing to Tacos Gavilan. Although I gave them a 5-star review last time, I went with a group, and it was pointed out to me that they did not seem to have a fish (fried or grilled) option or a shrimp option. So, I do have to deduct a star for that. I don't normally order those items, but I do occasionally, so it is a miss. I would still say that they are one of my favorite places. The service is fast and very friendly. The place is still clean as a brand-new whistle. With the place being so big, they can crank you in and out from order to getting your food so very quickly. Everything that they do have is top notch. Although the Al Pastor does not seem to have any pineapple, that can be a regional thing. The flavors are still fantastic. Hubby brought home a Plato Pastor w Large Horchata for Sunday Lunch 08.14.22 The Pastor was really yummy, tender and flavorful. Really good marinade. Has some chopped up onions. Definitely great addition to the asada. Horchata drink was good but not the best I've had. Definitely had better before. The jalapeño beware! It was really spicy as heck. El Gavilan is a chain food restaurant that specializes in tacos and other Mexican fast food. the ambiance is family oriented and has ample sitting tables. This place has caught my attention by serving "pre-packed" sauces and condiments that make it easy to take out without making a mess during your drive home. Another plus is that the restaurants are open till midnight, which makes it easy to make a quick stop after returning from an event. the establishment was very clean, and I could also see that the kitchen staff was careful to follow sanitary protocols. Tried this place close to work. I was impressed at how clean it was and the staff were nice and friendly. I ordered individual tacos and taco meal with rice and beans to go. We ordered steak, chicken and pork, lengua and cabesa. I think the lengua was the best. I was impressed at how nice they packaged everything. The plates had a plastic with elastic over them and the meal was in a nice to go container with a matching lid. All the condiments are pre-packed. Tacos gavilan on 17th street is a quick and easy place to get decent tacos, sopes, burritos, and more. The restaurant area is always really clean and well maintained including the condiments bar. I usually order the three taco plate and my husband loves the super mulitas. Inflation has bumped up the prices to about $8 per entree but it's still very good flavor and size. Of course it's not the best most authentic taco place but it's convenient and well done for what it is. The condiments bar has mostly pre packaged salsa, onions and cilantro, and lemons, and I appreciate that for cleanliness reasons. The staff are friendly and helpful to offer suggestions. The great thing is that they are open really late until 2am! PRO TIP: All the tacos come with two tortillas and plenty of meat so go ahead and double your tacos! read more
