They made the burrito w tons of meat, cheese, rice and I can't remember if there was beans or not. They left it open for me to add all the toppings I desired from coolers. Then I handed it back for them to wrap. This thing was soooo huge. I only ate half and it was delish. My boyfriend ordered 4 tacos. Each w a diff meat that he selected. He also got a large glass bottle of coke. Our bill total $21. Unbelievable. If I lived in SLC I would come here all the time. Plus the workers seemed really nice and kind to everyone. The owners are very friendly. This taco cart is in our rotation of favorite taco places. It is one of the best in the state and in my opinion the best in downtown Salt Lake City. The asada is tender and seasoned very well. They also have avocado which I've noticed most places do not have in the accompanying toppings. The Salsas are excellent however the red one is VERY spicy so proceed with caution on how much you add to it. This taco cart is located by gateway. Parking to get to it can be frustrating sometimes but worth it! They are generous with the meat in their dishes as well. A great meal for a great price! read more

Woooow! This place is great. I was just walking around when I stumbled upon this tiny little taco truck. There were several men mowing down tacos in front of it so I decided to stop. I wasn't very hungry and thought I'd just get something small but I saw they offered four tacos for $8 so I decided to try them. I ordered steak, chicken, spicy pork and shredded beef. They also have a cooler full of salsas, pickled vegetables, cabbage with grilled onions and jalapeños on the side. All of the meats were good with generous portions. Shredded beef is usually my favorite and this one had good texture and flavor. The spicy pork is definitely spicy so stay away if you're not into spicy foods. I'd say the chicken was a little bland and slightly dry but with all of the toppings it still tasted great. I ate all four tacos and am beyond full, two would have been just right. They are not the best tacos I've ever had but they're fantastic for the price. Definitely give this place a try. Ill be returning to try the breakfast burrito next time. This is another great Mexican food stand on the streets of SLC. The format isn't much different than the rest of 'em. Set up a stand with a few kinds of meat, offer some tacos or a burrito, get your fixins from a cooler on the side of the cart, and dive in. Where Hidalgo shines is the meat. Pollo, carne asada, adobada. All extremely well done and tender. Sometimes you worry about them drying out a little, but that was not the case, at least today. Perfectly moist, and downright gooey if you got it in smothered burrito form. I chose a tasty sampler of three tacos and really enjoyed each one. The spicy chicken was indeed spicy, but my wussy mouth survived just fine and I'd do it again. The asada was my favorite. Topped with green salsa, hot salsa, a little cabbage and some pico de gallo I couldn't stop winning. Tacos will set you back $1.25, the burrito $4.50 so it's a bargain. They know what they do well and they stick with it, which means you get great food, but may start craving a wider selection if you eat there every day. Who doesn't love tacos? Today I had their steak tacos. 4 for $5 which I think is a a very good deal. The tortillas are a bit too small and need to be cooked a little longer. Steak could be cut up just a bit more but they do provide a lot on your taco. The meat is lightly seasoned, could use a little more sauce but it still has flavor. I only tried their red hot sauce and I liked it. It has the spice but not the super unbearable ones that you usually find everywhere. There were three different sauces I believe and a variety of toppings. Cabbage, pico, cilantro, lime, carrots and jalapeños. All in all the sauce is what brought everything together and I would definitely return and have more tacos or try something new. read more

Found in the heart of downtown, right in front of the Depot, is Tacos Hidalgo. This isn't the first time I've been, nor the last, but I wanted to share some of the food we enjoyed. I had the steak quesadilla w/ sour cream, avocado sauce, cabbage, and pico. I also had a side rice and beans. The quesadilla itself was gigantic and amazing (which is always how it's made). They didn't skimp on anything. My only complaint would be that the beans were somewhat dry, but it happens. My love had the Al Pastor torta which they prepare with actual pineapple. She loved it. Hidalgo became a part of mi familia real quick. I was (who am I kidding, I still am) a poor, struggling, college student in Salt Lake and couldn't afford quality food between classes and work. I saw Hidalgo's taco stand while riding the Trax one day and decided to check it out. The tears of joy that rolled down my face when I saw that I could get get tacos for $1 that were filling was unlike anything else. The instant love I felt when I took the first bite of my steak tacos, garnished with my favorite tomatillo salsa and sour cream, and realizing that I wouldn't actually starve to death in college since these tacos were filling was something I will never, ever forget. Hidalgo was there for me when no one else was, keeping my excessive hunger at bay and my heart happy through his amazing street tacos. The burritos are just as great as well, but seriously, where else could you get $1 tacos? (Now $1.50 or 4 for $5). Because of this, Hidalgo and his wife(?) became part of my family. I visited multiple times per week while in school and never waited in long lines for my excellent tacos. I went back a year later after graduating and they were out in the snow, working as hard as ever. I decided that Hidalgo was going to be catering my wedding, my birthday parties, my half birthdays, basically anything that I need food for, he's that great. read more

The best taco stand near the Gateway. Tacos are $1.25 each with a few different choices, always fresh, and the people who run it are soo friendly. I went to Order the Adobada tacos and the guy warned me they were SPICY, I ordered one anyways, WOWZA it was spicy, if you cant handle spice do not get the Adobada meat. This place is amazing!! I am not very adventuresome. I had heard great things about this place so since it was a beautiful day we decided to venture out!! WOW! For $3.00 I received the best 3 tacos I have ever had. They did not skimp on the meat and the toppings were build your own. I got the Spicy Pork, Chicken and Steak tacos. They also have a Pork taco but 3 was more than my limit. My friend got a "monster" steak burrito. Amazing!! The men were very nice. I love Cafe Rio and I am willing to stand in line out the door but I have to say this was no competition. It was so much better and a 1/3 the price! Tacos Hidalgo is my new favorite lunchtime place!! I've searched high and wide and Tacos Hidalgo has the best tacos in SLC hands down. The price, meat selections, and toppings combine to get the 5 stars. Other joints have good tacos, but jack their prices up or lack toppings. Hidalgo will take care of you. The family that runs this taco cart is so nice and I love supporting them by visiting weekly (at least). They are open M-F 8am - 2pm by The Depot outside The Gateway. So worth it! read more

As strange as this may sound, if you are staying at the Courtyard or Hyatt place downtown SLC, you have very few food options between 9:30-11 am. Tacos Hidago is a food oasis in the vast desolation called downtown SLC. You may miss it as it is just a small food stand on S Temple if it were not for the steady customers that frequent this place. I had the steak burrito with an breakfast twist (ie fried egg as what looked like potatoes). It was hearty, tasty and hit the spot. I had a Pineapple mexican soda to top it off. There are a lot of things I find that I love about working downtown, you know, besides the extremely ample parking, the really short lines between the hours of noon and one for lunch spots, and the lack of traffic getting onto I-15 after 4. My real favorite about working downtown though is all of the cheap food options available (and this isn't sarcastic). Seriously, just a short walk down South Temple with a couple of my coworkers and I find myself here. Tacos Hidalgo. Now, what makes this so special from every other taco cart? I'm not really sure. But I do know that they have $1 tacos, with the meats consisting of carne asada, chicken, spicy pork, and shredded pork. Me being the fatty I am, had to order a taco each of every meat type. That and I've been craving Mexican food like crazy for the past few days. Anyways, I found that I loved all of the meats, except for the spicy pork, with the shredded pork being my favorite, and the carne asada coming in a close second. This place is awesome not only because they warm your tortilla right there when you order, but they have a huge cooler full of all the condiments you could ever want or need. And I'm talking limes, shredded cabbage, cilantro, pico de gallo, onions, various salsas and the more saucy guacamole. Normally I am very wary of taco carts, but they seemed very clean and trustworthy. It's 5 hours after I've consumed my plethora of tacos and I am still good to go, however... I just had the best burrito I've ever had, and I found it at Tacos Hidalgo. A friend recommended I try the chile verde pork burrito, but they only offer it from time to time. I lucked out today, because they had it as their special. The burrito is spectacular. Perfectly tender pork doused in a chile verde sauce that was deliciously spicy and rich. You can get the burrito smothered in the tasty green sauce as well, which I definitely recommend. The tortillas are also very good. Not tough in the least. This cart also has a large cooler with various salsas and other condiments. Crema, pico de gallo, and cilantro are all present. The owner of Tacos Hidalgo has over 15 years of experience working in the Salt Lake City restaurant scene, working for places such as Cafe Pierpont. First off, I'd like to say that I'm a huge fan of Taco Carts. I think they offer the best taco/burritos you can get at a fraction of the price. Now, not all taco carts are created equal. I have some basic criteria that I use to compare taco stands against other taco stands. - Compare carne asada and al pastor - Compare tacos/burritos - Condiments/salsa - Cleanliness - Location So, on this basis, Tacos Hiladago is the best in the state. His asada/pastor is second to none in both taco/burrito form. The pastor is well seasoned (not over/under). The asada is leaner meat and less fatty. Also, both types of meat are not dry or soupy. The condiments are pretty standard; but always well stocked and clean. I think this is the part where he stands out from everyone else; he has the cleanest taco carts I've seen. I don't mind a cart that looks old, but not dirty. His cart's are newer and clean. Also, his location down by 'The Depot'/Energy Solutions Arena has plenty of street parking. But the best feature compared to taco stands down by Sears; is the lack of people asking me for money or to sell me laptops out of suspicious bags. Now, with all of this said, I believe that Hiladago is the best taco stand in the valley. This is compared to the following: - Tacos Don Rafa (sears parking lot) - Tacos del Toro (sears parking lot) - The other taco stands at Sears but don't remember their names off hand. - Three Brothers Tacos - The taco stand in Sugarhouse by Barnes & Noble - Sure some other taco stand downtown that just didn't stand out to remember the name The best of the above is Three Brothers Tacos. Always by Bar X on the weekends and great tacos and you can use a credit card after I have donated all my cash to Bar X. His Al Pastor meat is the closest to Hiladago that I've had and definitely worth trying. I wish he had a spot that he was at consistently at in Salt Lake or a Twitter feed to follow where he is at currently. Third place after Hiladago/Three Brothers is Tacos del Toro. The Al Pastor has less flavor than it used to. I think the recipe has changed; but still good. The only issue is as I mentioned earlier, people asking for money, only place to sit is on a ledge with pigeon poop everywhere. In short, Tacos Hiladago is amazing. I love getting a burrito and sitting under a shaded tree in the summer downtown. His catering is amazing too and very well priced. I would suggest it to anyone. I've had him do three events for my work and people who swore they would never eat street vendor tacos love them now cause of him. Definitely try it out, you won't be disappointed. read more

It's a taco stand, but one of the better taco stands. This little gem hangs out on the corner of South Temple and 400 West. Two people usually man it: one cook, and one cashier. You can get tacos with 4 types of meat, or burritos that come with rice and refried beans. I usually get a smothered Chile Verde burrito when they have the Chile Verde. Otherwise, it's tacos all the way. Hidalgo makes great meats:chicken, steak, pork, and spicy pork. After you've chosen, make your way to the cooler of fixin's. There's 8 different kinds of stuff in there including 3 different salsas. I recommend 4 asada tacos with pico de gallo, cilantro and the spiciest salsa, Yow! And in most cases, you should only do this once because a lot of food carts serve terrible food. Tacos Hidalgo is not one of those food carts. This food is amazing and affordable. I'm one of those guys who asks the waiter to recommend something when I try a new place for the first time. I have eaten here several times and I'm still not sure what anything is called because I always ask them to make me something they'd like. Every time, I have not been disappointed. I had the mix breakfast burrito (bacon, sausage, potatoes, cheese, pico, green sauce) and my fiancé had the chorizo breakfast burrito (chorizo, potatoes, cheese, pico, and red sauce). I walk 1.5 miles both ways just to have these guys make me a burrito or streat taco. Chicken, steak, pork or spicy pork, any meat it's good and tender.
