Possibly a coveted 5 stars pending review for authenticity. There is a lot going on in this middle eastern supermarket. I found the secret restaurant where workers were having lunch. I asked for a shawarma plate but they told me to have the lamb and rice. It was savory and tasty. Wow. I didn't have time to shop more but there is an entire olive oil aisle , large tea selection , and many more. I tried some traditional Arabic deserts that were too heavy with oil and sugar but good experience to learn what you like. I grabbed a few cans of babaghanoush and hummus which I like to keep in the pantry. I will return next month probably and consider 5 stars. read more

Dishonest grocer. Many of the goods do not have a price. Each time you go, they decide what price to randomly assign to many items. In the past, something they charge me $0.60 for, they now claimed was $1.29, meanwhile, when they scanned the item, no price came up. With a recommendation, we walked in, and for a second, we were so happy to see a big store fully loaded with all kinds of groceries. Still, as soon we walked towards the aisle, we saw employees, customers, and half of the people were not wearing a mask, and there were few of them kind of holding a show on their necks and mouths, they decided not to cover the nose. I can't believe it when we all know Texas has a maximum number of coronavirus victims. These people chose to kill themselves and others and pretending nothing is going on. Based on recommendation from a friend who lived in Houston I decided to give the restaurant a try. long story short, the owner seems fedup with the business, didn't care about his language in front of customers, using the cell phone while making my sandwich, so one hand on his cell phone the other is making the sandwich and trying to cut a tomatoe. The place is not clean and you can see for yourself, the attitude is horrible! If you don't want to deal with people maybe you need to sell and move on. If you follow a halal diet and are adventurous in your kitchen at home, then this place is a staple in your repertoire of ingredient sources. For those not in the know, when compared to other stores like HEB or Krogers, Jerusalem is an unorganized mess. The aisles are narrow and the shelves are filled high to the sky. Yes, there are signs letting you know what's generally in the aisles; however, they're more like suggestions. There's a small produce section next to the olive and oil aisle. Yes, a full aisle dedicated to deliciousness. And trust me when I say to peruse the produce section. It's small but has random fruits and veggies like sweet lemon. Yes, that's a thing. No, they don't taste like oranges. The chaotic good continues with aisles that are only open on one end- like their beauty products. An assortment of soaps and lotions towards the front. Head to the back and you think there are going to be more products, but surprise! It's a small prayer hall set up with prayer mats facing Mecca. Then there's a restaurant in the back right corner. Get the chicken shawarma with everything on it, thank me later. The crown jewel of this establishment is the deli in the back. Their meat is delivered three days a week, so you're getting the freshest product sans going to a farm. It's clean and the workers typically fill your order quickly. Bring a sweater, because it's frigid in there. Just outside the deli are a couple of freezers with prepackaged meats that people typically order- think different ground meats, chicken breasts, and the like. They also have products like pepperoni, salami, and bacon. I haven't seen some of these products in the other halal markets in town **major disclaimer** none of the workers on the floor or in the deli are super fluent in English. The guys in the back who butcher the meat understand enough to fill your order, just don't expect a lot of small talk. They even know what cuts you need for certain South Asian dishes like Nihari. Head to the front counter if you can't find something. This is a family owned and operated establishment and they're all great about telling you where everything is and when it'll be in if they're out. If you have some spare time and want to try some new ingredients or aren't sure where to get a certain middle eastern ingredient, try Jerusalem. You never know what will inspire you there. read more

Most of the cashiers act like it's their first time working with their check out system. They add each item multiple times onto the receipt and change the name of the item to grocery so that no one can really understand which item is which. I've been to this store at least two times already and each time the cashier adds 4/6 items extra onto my receipt! That is theft! Never going back to this store! If there was ever a Halal meat market more critical to the existence of man, it would be this one. Jerusalem Halal Meats has been dropping it like it's hot for a good while now. They still have one of the largest varieties of Middle-Eastern products anywhere. Not to mention the largest collection of olive oil I have EVER seen in my life. Once you have had Lebanese olive oil, you don't go back to any other kind. I personally stock up on "El Koura" extra virgin olive oil when I am in town as I can't find it in KC. If you use a hard to find brand of olive oil though, you will most likely find it here. There is also a huge variety of pastries near the registers. I personally find their regular baklava to be pretty disgusting. To give the stuff to hungry Bangladeshi street dogs would probably be a crime punishable by death (preferably via firing squad) But their pistachio baklava however, that stuff is straight divine in every way. read more

Prices are reasonable as you get lots (I mean LOTS) of meat for $12 per pound and the service is friendly here too. The Staff: Steer clear of the male Arab cashiers...well...because they're creepy. Except for the owner, he's a middle-aged Arab man who handles his business quite well. He is hard working and trustworthy. I hate to categorize by ethnicity...but any of the Latino staff (cashiers or meat butchers) are the friendliest and most accommodating. Layout: Yes, everything is cramped. You are going to have to excuse yourself a few times after bumping heads with someoe else in the little produce section. The normal aisles are fairly easy to navigate through. The butchers clean the meat nicely; it gets pretty loud in the butchery area, and the lines can get crazy. Ramadan (Islamic month of fasting) will be coming up in the summer so expect to wait in line for three hours before getting your meat if you come around July or August. As for the normal pita bread packets that you can find towards the front of the store, freshly baked! Some of the break packets will still be warm if you come in the morning! mmmm mouth watering. As for the various food items at the cashier area; meh never really interested me. So if you want some cheap halal eats this place is decent. Today I had the lamb platter and tried some of the rotisserie beef as well as the salad. The platters are definitely too big for one person and probably should be shared. On my way out I noticed a nice woman preparing Ethiopian dishes at a table off to the side of the lunch counter. Will have to go back to try it out because it looked delicious. Curiously not mentioned in other reviews (perhaps only available on Sundays?). This review is for the deli in the back of the store. Got a recommendation from my Indonesian Barbecue Sensei that this spot had a good falafel sandwich. I kept passing the store because I was expecting a standalone restaurant. The deli is actually hidden in the back of a grocery store. Parking - fine Ambiance - They're not going to win any awards for decor and design. In other words, I felt right at home. The tables weren't bussed yet. Behind the counter, where the magic was happening, wasn't as organized and neat as what you might expect @ Chipotle or Subway. So be warned, this isn't the place to bring your OCD date. Clientele - When I got there, there were 4 tables of 7 occupied. At 2 tables, there were just some older men talking about the topics of the day, plates had been finished possibly hours ago. Some taking tea, most just exchanging words. It's actually a very beautiful thing that we don't really have in our culture at all, breaking bread and talking to each other for the purpose of talking to each other. I wasn't the only non-middle easterner there, my hermanos from another madre were repping too. Another awesome thing about Houston is that folks from different cultures will venture outside of their own culture and the dominant culture and partake. Everybody loves good food at a fair price. Service - It was very friendly. I wish I spoke Arabic so that I could communicate better, but the guy behind the counter spoke plenty of "customer english" and hooked me up. I really wish there was a menu, so I could figure out what dishes they had on the steam table and available to be prepared. Price - I just got the falafel sandwich and a coke - which came to a little more than 5 bucks. The Food With that in mind, I came for a falafel sandwich. The falafel was made fresh. (it wasn't sitting under a heat lamp unlike some other places i've been....*mentions no names*.) It was rolled up like burrito with some spicy harissa, ice berg lettuce, pickled jalapenos, tomato, and some yogurt sauce. I'm personally a fan of the smushed balls rammed into a slit pita pocket with self serve toppings, but I haven't seen too many folks rock the Amsterdam/Maoz style yet. This is a review of the deli in the back rather than of the grocery store as a whole. If you like middle eastern food, specifically kebabs, hummus, rice, etc. this is the definitive place in Houston to get it. My advice is to skip the cafeteria style stuff on display under the counter and do the following: 1) Call ahead around 11:00am or so and order lamb chops. Figure out how many pounds you need based on how many people are going to eat there because they order in terms of weight rather than size. 2) Show up at about 12:30 or so, pick up your lamb chops, an order of hummus (be sure they put the chili paste on it, or if you want more meat, get it served hummus shawarma.) 3) Pig out on the food, then when you are about to leave, ask for their special rice in a to go container for you to eat for supper. If you follow those steps, you will enjoy your food. I've tried stuff from the counter and it's not really that good, in my opinion. Their kebabs are good, their shawarmas are good, but the lamb kebabs are the absolute best in Houston. I would also say that they sell the best hummus in Houston, if you prefer it to be middle eastern styled rather than greek style. Their rice deserves a paragraph of it's own. Each day, they serve a different variety of rice. Don't get confused and order the stuff with the cafeteria style food, this comes from a huge foil-wrapped dish the size of an extra large pizza sitting on the side where the cash register is. They vary the spices of the rice between middle eastern and Indian, but it is always great. Different days have different meats in the rice, but my favorite (I believe it's served on Thursdays) has lamb. Although I love this place, it is not going to be the nicest looking place you've been to. If you love hole in the wall restaurants, this is for you. If you aren't aware of the fact that every restaurant has a dirty kitchen, and that this place is just a little more obvious about it, don't go there. read more

Great selection on middle eastern grocery items though I would recommend to avoid the sweets, as it very expensive and not as tasty. Lamb at 5.99 a pound is the best deal you will find and it's very good quality. While the place seems dirty and disorganized, it's what is expected as this is a truly traditional middle eastern market. The reason I am taking one star off is because the staff aren't the nicest people. On my recent trip, I asked for Okra and the man looked at me like I am crazy then when I proceeded to ask him in arabic, he just told me, "I don't know." While I understand that the staff member maybe truly didn't know where the okra was, I really have never had a good interaction with anyone working here! I love going here to get that international/world feel. It's not your average supermarket. Aisles are narrow and shelves are full to the brim, but like another reviewer said, it's like a slice of the Middle East in Houston. It's fun going through and checking out all of the unique foods from all around the world. I don't know how to cook with 90% of them, but the cheeses are delicious, the olives, to die for and they have real turkish delight, which is always a hit with my little CS Lewis fans. Unfortunately, this place is way disorganized and not enough room between shelves. Hard to find stuff, and the place stinks from their meat shop. When I first moved to Houston, I bought meat one time here, and would never buy again. I wasted a lot of money on lamb meat, as the kabob meat tasted rubbery and hard on the BBQ grill. The Mexican workers in the meat shop don't understand how to select the right cut for the right meal. The workers seem rude (very uncustomary friendly). That is very bad for the business owner. He needs to consider training for his workers on how to be friendly, smile, answer politely, look customers in the eyes, pay attention to their needs, and overall have a positive attitude. This is basically a slice of the Middle East in Houston. If you're looking for something that's organized and efficient you're going to be disappointed. On the other hand if you don't mind the "Inshallah" mentality and not rushing through things, it's a real treasure. You can get all kinds of Middle Eastern things such as shisha tobacco, chai, rice, halal meats, bread and pretty much anything else you'd want for groceries. But there's also a small restaurant in the back that serves some great Middle Eastern food at good prices (I recommend the hummus and chai). But if you've never been around Middle Easterners, it may be a bit of a culture shock, but that's what makes it fun. read more

I read the reviews before coming here and indeed, this place is overstocked. I walked around the entire store just to glance at what they carry. I came here ONLY to purchase goat meat ($7.49 per lb). I couldn't find the goat meat initially and was trying to figure out who works there besides the cashier clerks. Eventually I found someone and he directed me to where it's located. The store had several customers and some Hispanic workers. The clerk I had spoke English and smiled. I did pass by the small restaurant/cafe area that other reviewers mentioned. There is a prayer room. Also, there is a large kitchen to butcher fresh meat and I saw a crowd of people (maybe 6 people) waiting. So my guess is one can purchase fresh meat per request. Unsure what "fresh" meats are available, but besides goat, I noticed they sell different cuts of chicken, lamb and beef. First time purchasing goat meat so I hope it comes out good and that the meat is from a young goat. The cuts I saw had lots of bones. It will help if they had aisle signs. I saw stacks of boxes in one area and other boxes that were just in the way. They are seriously overstocked and in lack of space to store the amount of items they carry. I am still unsure of this and need to do some more investigating but nevertheless I went to this locale to try out some meat. What I found was much more than just a meat market... it was a full on grocery store, with a deli in the back no less. They had tons of international oils, sweets, treats, and drinks. I found my way to the prepacked meats and was able to snag 4 rather large skinless boneless chicken breasts for $10.85. That's a pretty good deal, but I was a bit worried on how a real chicken could have breasts that large without hormones... Is my search over or has it just begun? Anyways, the people there were really nice, and even started telling me how they'd been to the pyramids in Egypt, (the man had been handling a hookah with a picture of kebu on it). The roasted chicken in taste great plus it's halal. Used to come here after school to buy drinks it's like right across the street from Lee. (GO GENERALS!)
