I ordered the mini tacos: barbacoa, tripa, asada, and chicharron in green sauce. Most recommend the barbacoa, the meat chunks just fall apart in my mouth, and the charred edge added extra texture and flavor too. And I really like the chicharron too, every piece was soaked up with zesty and spicy juice, very juicy to eat. The place for excellent chorizo. Not that greasy saliva gland grocery store chorizo. But real chorizo. As a person native born to Houston, but having lived and explored much of the world, one of my favorite things to do is to invite friends to go on a walking tour with me, of the area around the Houston Farmer's Market on Airline. Many years run by the Canino family, as a co-op with local farmers. And when they retired a group of Houstonians, committed to preserving it and making it as nice as possible for shopping. And it's a wonderful place to go shopping for fruits and vegetables and to eat one of the restaurants here. So I usually begin my walking tour with a trip to El Bolillo Bakery to show them the breads and then over to Granel Spices and then to El Rey meat market to show them the chorizo that I like and the freshly made chicharrones and to pointing out the most excellent Mexican restaurant just on the side El Rey. And then heading over to the farmers market proper and showing them the excellent flour tortillas that one can get at Alamo Tamales. A visit to LA Crawfish or other eateries. And also walk and talk about the different uses of the spices and maybe some tropical fruits that people might not be familiar with. It's a great half day and I love taking people around. So definitely plan to visit this area of Airline Drive and have some fun. read more

After visiting a local farmers market on Airline this morning. Without having my usual HEB Houston blend coffee and some breakfast at home, I built up a decent appetite on the borderline of being hangry with the hot and humid weather we have been experiencing in southern Texas. Finding authentic Mexican food is like finding a needle in a haystack in Texas. Went in looking to buy meats to cook at home and noticed they were serving food. We ordered some carnita tacos and washed it down with some Coca Cola from the glass Mexican bottles. Food was prepared by a team of females. It felt like I was eating some tacos prepared from the comforts of the cooks homes. There is no menu, just numbers for orders. Was quite chaotic since I don't speak a lick of Spanish but love all things Mexican cuisine. Food was amazing! 6 tacos with two cokes for a little over $18 and left the place with full bellies. El Rey meat market has several locations but I can only attest to this one. Not only was this location immaculately clean, it had everything imaginable. Not only quality meats and groceries, but it also had a full hot food area with awesome food, but a dine in seating area to enjoy it. There is also an area to barbacoa and carnitas by the pound. Delicious!! I got the ropa vieja plate with Mexican rice and everything was so good! I absolutely hate beans but the black beans were so flavorful. I loved it. The beef was so tender. I will definitely come back again. I would've given 5 stars but I bought a rotisserie chicken a la carte for 6.99 but when I opened the box the chicken was sooo small. My husband and I have been coming here for our weekend menudo fix for a few years now. It's out of our way but worth the trip! On Airline Dr., just across from the original farmers market, parking lot and street parking are available or you can park the farmers market lot and stop by before or after your meal. The steam table/counter is always stocked full of fresh favorites; barbacoa, fajitas, chicharron en salsa verde and of course egg w/chorizo, egg w/potato, egg w/bacon. My favorite is the consome de borrego...the full order comes with carne de borrego and the consomme is a bowl so thick with collagen and bits that its fills your heart with joy and satisfaction. The menudo is always fresh and if you're regulars like us, you get the special universal symbol of hospitality, a nice piece of meaty collagen goodness, pata! The tortillas are made on site...you just can't beat the taste of freshly made corn tortillas hot off the griddle, soft and flavorful. We usually make it in between 10am-11am on Saturdays or Sundays which allows us to be greeted at the door by the owner who is either at the door greeting his customers or overseeing the grill set up just outside. The grill is stacked full of arrachera and onions and if you stop to chat he'll give you a slice to get your taste buds ready for the comfort food waiting for you inside. Folks, this is Mexican meat market complete with a butcher counter, small vegetable display, a few aisles of packaged foods and sundries. A wall of refrigerators with beverages and staples such as milk, eggs. You'll see an army of friendly ladies behind the steam table, get in line so they can take your order and name. You can then choose where to sit from the two rows of tables and chairs. They offer fresh juices, smoothies or Aguas frescas such as horchata and lemonade or help yourself to the cold beverage selection in the coolers. You'll have your food brought to your table and then you go back to the counter when finished to pick up your tab. Pay at the front register and don't forget to let them know about your drinks. You'll be smart to pick up some delicious Mexican treats or bread which are conveniently displayed near the register. Walk off your meal next door at the farmers market or go across the street to Granels spice market for a short visit to spice and herb wonderland and an assortment of artisanal treats, chocolate, gifts and candles.
