This place is quite the local legend that needs to be visited for any cajun or southern enthusiast. This time around, my wife and I decided to order food from their inhouse cafe. We got their daily special Jambalaya and their crawfish and stuffed chicken etouffee . Both of which is absolutely delicious! However, the best part of this place is its endless selection of Cajun/southern inspired butchery. Loaded with freezers and coolers, there are many selections to spice up your next bbq with something unique. Stuffed duck, stuffed chicken, stuffed pork, meat pies, turduckens just to name a few things. Pricing is reasonable but still on the higher end. Logical as you should pay for unique products. Changed plans for winter break and swung by Hebert's Meat Market for a quick meal. The deboned chicken stuffed with cornbread dressing was good, but the dressing was too moist for our liking. Green beans and corn sides were not our favorites. However, the boudin balls were spot on with a perfect meat to rice ratio. Also tried the chicken Diablo by mistake and was pleasantly surprised. 2 Stars for bad service. I know we are in the mist of this horrible time with this Coronavirus but please, let's try and have some patience and get through this together. First time there and I had been wanting to go in this place for a while now. I pass it each time I head to Costco. This time, I made a point to go in because of all the shortage of meats in the grocery store. Wasn't sure what to expect but when I arrived and went inside, it was pretty bare and that was no surprise. I fully expected to see that however, I was not even been greeted by the little person in all black that was too busy with boxes to even look up at me. And I'm the only one in this store. I came on Christmas Eve right before lunchtime to pick up a duck--they had one with shrimp stuffing and another with crawfish stuffing (that weren't frozen)--I got the shrimp stuffed one so we could bake it immediately. It was way too much meat. Yes I said it. Plus the default stuffing isn't very good. It's a pork stuffing. The best roasted chicken I've ever had. And so easy to prep too - 1 1/2 hours in the oven. The chicken was juicy throughout, and the stuffing was incredible. Boudin Balls. I've never had really spicy boudin balls so these were a first and they are really awesome! Crawfish etoufee. This was the reason why I came, but it's pretty expensive and the flavor is pretty mild compared to most restaurants. Crab au gratin. Cheesy and crabby goodness, but nothing too special. I haven't visited the store personally because my parents usually pick up stuff for me. However, I've enjoyed everything I've tried. This Thanksgiving we got a turkey stuffed with crawfish rice. We have a stronger oven, so we didn't use the full cooking time. I would suggest keeping an eye on it with a thermometer. It was juicy, spicy, delicious, and deboned! The smallest size was 10 pounds. Got the stuffed catfish and pork chop for a reasonable price, Both were good, me leaning towards the catfish, but the chop had a ton of meat on it. This my happy place! They have the best quality selection in Houston. Staff are incredible and everything is vacuum packed and super clean and fresh. If you need a turducken, look no further, this is the place to get it. Heberts! (It's french/creole, so pronounced 'A-bear') That's right folks, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken. All deboned. Laissez le bon temps rouler! When the thing is cooked, the fat from the duck congeals the birds together, so it is relatively easy to slice. For the past several years, my family has gone here during the holiday season to get the stuffed deboned chickens. Chicken isn't really my thing so the whole deboned thing is amazing to me. Just have to pop it in the oven, then eat it. My favorite is the chicken with crawfish and rice dressing. Inexpensive for $12. The Turducken is $60+. I've tried their boudin (I love boudin). I usually review restaurants, so I must mention that this is a store..like a local butcher! No hot stove, no microwave, no nothing. Everything is either cold in the meat section or the frozen section. It is basically a convenient cajun grocery store! Turducken - this is their specialty! And also other stuffed meats! Their website is quite helpful with what they serve...which is some good ol' cajun food. Being a Louisiana girl, I was craving some gumbo, meat pies and crawfish pies. I went here on a Saturday and was comfortable all around. It is a small shop with fridges and freezers all around with Zatarains and New Orleans seasoning packages throughout the store. I picked up the frozen gumbo, 3 meat pies, and one turducken stuffed with ground pork. In a matter of weeks, my hubs and I cooked everything according to directions and it all tasted like home. I would NOT recommend the meat pies because they are not as spicy/flavorful as the ones you get at the corner store in NOLA. But everything else is just as good. Hebert's where have you been all this time?! Oh, in that grungy little strip center off 610 and Richmond Ave next to the Chinese restaurant. As a late bloomer to the wonders of Cajun food, my interest was piqued when I heard about Hebert's last year, but the only location I knew of was OTL (outside the loop), which might as well be BFE (bum furkey Estonia), as far as I'm concerned. Well, this Thanksgiving, thanks to Yelp and the awesome reviewers that proliferate, needin' to get their opinions out, I find out we ITLers (inside the loopers) are blessed to have an Hebert's within the loop, if not right on the cusp of 610 itself. Hebert's specializes in turducken and all kinds of stuffed fowl, fish and meat. I, on the other hand, am over the moon about their crawfish and shrimp pies. I was determined to get some for our Thanksgiving dinner this year and at $3.75-$4.25 a pie, why not pick up several? Waaay better than a Hot Pocket. These pies are a puff pastry encasing crawfish or shrimp in a bechamel sauce. Heat them up at 400 degrees in the oven for about 30 minutes, per the directions (all of their food is frozen and comes with directions for cooking). Oh, be sure to cut a little slit on top of the pie before you bake it or you may have a crustacean explosion with a flat puff pastry when you open your oven. The pie, with a nice salad makes a good, simple dinner. One pie is about the size of your hand and very filling, what with that rich bechamel sauce. Hebert's also sells quarts of crawfish or shrimp etouffee, crawfish or shrimp fettucine, stuffed crab, boudin balls, and just a whole lotta stuff that will put on the weight. read more
