Herbert's Specialty Meat Market is such a great Houston spot for Cajun food. They have a huge selection of easy meals to take home, including deboned chickens stuffed with rice, crawfish, or shrimp, along with gumbo, étouffée, boudin balls, and plenty more. Everything I've tried has been excellent. It's especially great for stocking the freezer with something you can pull out later in the week for an easy dinner that still feels like a real meal. Everyone I've recommended it to has loved what they've tried as well. This location is great, although one thing to know is that it doesn't serve hot prepared meals like their other location does, where you can get a full plate with things like chicken, étouffée, collard greens, and other sides. I do wish they offered that here too. For Cajun food in Houston, especially something you can take home and cook yourself, this is one of my favorite places. I recommend it all the time and would go back in a heartbeat. It really feels like a local staple, and I'm glad we have it in Houston. read more

We got their daily special Jambalaya and their crawfish and stuffed chicken etouffee . Both of which is absolutely delicious! However, the best part of this place is its endless selection of Cajun/southern inspired butchery. Loaded with freezers and coolers, there are many selections to spice up your next bbq with something unique. Stuffed duck, stuffed chicken, stuffed pork, meat pies, turduckens just to name a few things. Pricing is reasonable but still on the higher end. Logical as you should pay for unique products. Changed plans for winter break and swung by Hebert's Meat Market for a quick meal. The deboned chicken stuffed with cornbread dressing was good, but the dressing was too moist for our liking. Green beans and corn sides were not our favorites. However, the boudin balls were spot on with a perfect meat to rice ratio. Also tried the chicken Diablo by mistake and was pleasantly surprised. 2 Stars for bad service. I know we are in the mist of this horrible time with this Coronavirus but please, let's try and have some patience and get through this together. First time there and I had been wanting to go in this place for a while now. I pass it each time I head to Costco. This time, I made a point to go in because of all the shortage of meats in the grocery store. Wasn't sure what to expect but when I arrived and went inside, it was pretty bare and that was no surprise. I fully expected to see that however, I was not even been greeted by the little person in all black that was too busy with boxes to even look up at me. And I'm the only one in this store. Again, I know it's a crazy time but hey, I was there to purchase some meat and really needed the help. I didn't see anyone else working the store either. I came on Christmas Eve right before lunchtime to pick up a duck--they had one with shrimp stuffing and another with crawfish stuffing (that weren't frozen)--I got the shrimp stuffed one so we could bake it immediately. Your place to get your TurDucKen. A full sized one will cost you 67.00. The line was going out the door so you knew it was the place to be. Honestly, the TurDucKen was a DisAppointMent. It was way too much meat. Yes I said it. Plus the default stuffing isn't very good. It's a pork stuffing. The best roasted chicken I've ever had. And so easy to prep too - 1 1/2 hours in the oven. The chicken was juicy throughout, and the stuffing was incredible. Boudin Balls. I've never had really spicy boudin balls so these were a first and they are really awesome! Crawfish etoufee. This was the reason why I came, but it's pretty expensive and the flavor is pretty mild compared to most restaurants. Crab au gratin. Cheesy and crabby goodness, but nothing too special. Probably wouldn't get it again. Can't wait to go back and try more they have to offer. read more

I haven't visited the store personally because my parents usually pick up stuff for me. However, I've enjoyed everything I've tried. This Thanksgiving we got a turkey stuffed with crawfish rice. We have a stronger oven, so we didn't use the full cooking time. I would suggest keeping an eye on it with a thermometer. It was juicy, spicy, delicious, and deboned! The smallest size was 10 pounds. Got the stuffed catfish and pork chop for a reasonable price, Both were good, me leaning towards the catfish, but the chop had a ton of meat on it. This my happy place! They have the best quality selection in Houston. Staff are incredible and everything is vacuum packed and super clean and fresh. I will miss the food counter at the Dairy Ashford location, but stocked up 10 days ago and will be restocking online for mail delivery tomorrow. You can get your meat refrigerator fresh or frozen. These guys will even sit and discuss with you (with a Cajun twang) the best ways to ensure your meat is cooked perfectly! If you need a turducken, look no further, this is the place to get it. Heberts! (It's french/creole, so pronounced 'A-bear') That's right folks, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken. All deboned. Laissez le bon temps rouler! When the thing is cooked, the fat from the duck congeals the birds together, so it is relatively easy to slice. For the past several years, my family has gone here during the holiday season to get the stuffed deboned chickens. Chicken isn't really my thing so the whole deboned thing is amazing to me. Just have to pop it in the oven, then eat it. My favorite is the chicken with crawfish and rice dressing. Inexpensive for $12. The Turducken is $60+. I've tried their boudin (I love boudin). Theirs is great, however if given the choice, I prefer to get mine at a mom & pop place east of Port Arthur. read more

Their website is quite helpful with what they serve...which is some good ol' cajun food. Being a Louisiana girl, I was craving some gumbo, meat pies and crawfish pies. I went here on a Saturday and was comfortable all around. It is a small shop with fridges and freezers all around with Zatarains and New Orleans seasoning packages throughout the store. I picked up the frozen gumbo, 3 meat pies, and one turducken stuffed with ground pork. In a matter of weeks, my hubs and I cooked everything according to directions and it all tasted like home. I would NOT recommend the meat pies because they are not as spicy/flavorful as the ones you get at the corner store in NOLA. But everything else is just as good. Forget driving 5 hours to NOLA...I can just go to Herberts and get my fix for NOLA!! YAY!! read more
