Decided to swing by Tai Pan since we were already in the neighborhood, and I'd heard this dim sum/bakery spot originally came from the Bay Area. We showed up about an hour before closing, so the selection was pretty limited, but we still grabbed a few dim sum items and some baked goodies. Everything we tried was delicious and super filling. There was only one worker there, and she was super friendly and sweet. They do have their own parking lot, but it's definitely on the smaller side and it's a bit of a tight squeeze. so....this place has been operating for about a year now. i have never been here and wanted to see how their take out items are after their initial grand opening. I also wanted to compare their items with other 2 other local Dim sum take out locations: ABC Bakery and Dim Dim bakery. Why only these locations? ABC Bakery is considered by many locals as the "OG", And Dim Dim bakery is just a few minutes from ABC Bakery. But all three locations would be considered local take-out dim sum competitors in south sac. I wanted to include Lam Kwong market but they recently sold to new owners and it would not be a true comparison. And Ho Chin market was also not included since their dim sum items are available every Tuesday and Friday from San Francisco bakeries. Not local. So first impressions. Very clean establishment. But their staff needs some training in customer service. Granted, ABC Bakery and Dim Dim staff are also not the most friendliest but they are fast and efficient. Tai Pan staff are also not the most friendly when customers approach them...perhaps that's the norm? But what stood out for me was the very unfriendly attitude of the cashier that took my order. He had an attitude of being "Too cool" in retrieving and very slow packaging my items. As if, i was doing him a favor by patronizing their establishment. So enough of their poor customer service. how was the food. I ordered their pork shu mai, hai gow, and baked bbq bun. Their shu mai is decent and didn't seem to have as much msg in the pork filling. Their hai gow had your basic shrimp filling, thin casing but it also possess a different seasoning than other hai gows. I couldn't place that spice though. it was ok. the baked bbq bun had a basic somewhat dry pork filling but the bun itself was sweeter than other baked bbq buns. In terms of flavor and size of the items - decent. Nothing to rave about but also nothing to be despondent about too. And i did noticed prices are a little higher than the other two locations. Personally, i would still rank ABC Bakery as #1, Dim Dim as #2 (especially their outstanding Portuguese egg tart) , and perhaps Tai Pan #3. Would I return, not sure. I decided to visit Tai Pan for the first and last time after reading several reviews, even though it was a semi-short drive. Upon arrival, the parking lot was full, so I had to park along the side of the Starbucks. When I walked in at 11:00 AM on a Saturday, the place was completely empty--a bit unusual for a weekend morning. The layout: to the left, there is a variety of baked goods, including BBQ pork, hot dog, and pineapple *baos*. To the right of the register, you'll find fried shrimp balls, pork dumplings, eggplant tofu, noodles, and other treats. Finally, on the far right, they have the steamed dumplings and *baos*. We tried the shark fin dumplings, pork *sui mai*, *har gow*, BBQ pork *bao*, and fried shrimp balls. **The Food:** * **Shark Fin Dumplings:** These tasted old. The "fin" was crusty, and the filling had a sour taste. It was honestly gross. * **Pork Sui Mai:** Average at best and in need of salt. The texture was dense, though semi-juicy. I much prefer the version from Dim Dim Food. * **Shrimp Har Gow:** These were a highlight--large, juicy, and full of flavor with a nice bamboo crunch. * **BBQ Pork Steamed Bao:** The bun was soft and warm, and the filling had a good balance of sweet and savory. However, I wish there had been more filling inside. * **Fried Shrimp Balls:** These were lukewarm and had a rubbery, chewy texture that made them difficult to eat. Compared to ABC Bakery, where the balls are crispy with wonton strips sticking out, these felt greasy and lackluster. **Verdict:** While the shop itself is nice and modern, the food was disappointing. I was hoping for better quality and more traditional preparation. Given the higher prices and the lack of freshness, I will be sticking with ABC Bakery and Dim Dim Food as my go-to spots. Note- They were open on Easter. I was surprised as most small business are closed on Easter. It looked like the Pizza and Thai place in their little strip mall were open also. I've never been here before due to the parking situation. They are part of a strip mall and the parking lot always looks full so I pass. My husband was during today and thought this place would give us some tasty Easter treats so we drove over. It's a little bit of a drive for us, but worth it as we were also going to get the cheaper gas down the street. Upon walking in I was a bit shocked at how bare bones the place was. It wasn't a fancy bakery with lots of baked goods to choose from. The one case with Mochi was completely empty. I'm guessing since it's a holiday they didn't stock up. The line is confusing. When we walked in we figured the line started by the cashier, it wasn't till we paid and I looked back and realized the line started at the other end of the counter. OPPs. When we arrived there were two people at the cashier and a third person waiting. We just got behind that last person and figured we were in line. By the time we left there was a party of 4 that had walked in and it turns out they were standing in the correct place. I wanted the BBQ Pork bun, but my husband swayed me away from it saying it was all dough and virtually no meat. I looked at some pictures on Yelp and that's exactly what it showed. Too bad. I would have bought a dozen to eat over the next week and even freeze. My grandmother used to buy a box and freeze them for a rainy day. I loved going to visit her as she'd pull one out and we'd get a real treat. They have some really good combos, but you need to be in the mood for Congee and fish. We were on a quest for a little snack so that didn't fit the bill. What we really wanted was the lotus leaf filed with sticky rice, chinese sausage, and some meat mixture with tiny shrimp and mushrooms. My favorite part is the sticky rice and chinese sausage. We also got the stuffed eggplant with shrimp. They have a little sitting area in back, which we used to enjoy our treats. My husband and I agree that the Lotus leaf was the best, even better than other places we've gone recently. The stuffed eggplant was ok, but it was room temperature. I would have preferred it to be warm or hot. Service was slow. It just took them a long time to gather the orders up and package them. It's nothing like another local dim sum place we usually go to. I happened to be in the area and decided to check out this new spot everyone's been raving about. I ordered the custard bun and the 3-piece shu mai. Custard bun: Soft as a pillow with delicate layers and a moist interior. First off. Parking sucks at this location! Tight spots and it's hard to get in and out of the lot with cars coming and going. I picked up a few items to try, since this was my first time here. I also waited until the crowds and hype died down. I got 3 pork sui mais, 2 stuffed bell peppers, 1 BBQ pork bao, and 1 sticky rice in lotus leaf. BLAND! Lacks flavor. Unsure what rice they've used for the sticky rice in lotus leaf. It wasn't sticky and it lacks flavor. Same goes for the stuffed bell peppers. I mean it was a pretty decent size, but it also had little to no taste. What was happening here?! The bbq bao has a nice soft doughy texture, but there wasn't much taste in the meat filling! The chivas and shrimp dumplings were juicy and full of so much flavor. The sesame seed balls were warm, gooey, and crispy. So delicious! The baked bbq pork buns were fluffy and had so much filling. A friend and I were doing some errands in the neighborhood, I wanted to try Tai Pan, so we stopped by. This place is more of a to go place, but they do have a few tables you can sit and enjoy some dim sum. I was in the mood for some congee. It was a rainy, cold day, congee sounded so good. We order a variety of items to share. I thought the congee was very good. The soup had good flavor and a good amount of pork and preserved eggs. It tasted like my mom made it. The steamed Char Sui bun was ok, but a little dry. The pork did not have any sauce and the bun was heavy. The bun part was thick and a little dry. The chive fried dumpling was very oily. The pork fried dumpling was good. The dumpling was crispy and had a lot of filling in it. It was different than others I've tried. It had peanuts in the filling. I didn't care for it. Plus, I don't like cilantro, I probably won't order that one again. My friend ordered more items, but I didn't want to stuff myself. I didn't try the shrimp dumplings and Sui mai. The staff were very nice. The place is ok. Some items are good and some are not to my liking. Also, the place uses peanuts and peanut oil. I finally had a chance to check out Tai Pan and also wanted to wait until they had been open for a bit. They're located in a small shopping plaza so parking is always a challenge. The line wasn't too bad. A gentleman took our order while we were waiting in line which I thought was pretty cool. Said we could add to the order when we get to the cashier and there were 5 people ahead of me. I order lots of things and too many to name, but I'll share what I enjoyed, the congee with salted egg, I thought was cooked really tasty. Everything else like the pork dumpling and shrimp dumpling were basic. The pastry I grabbed was dry which I thought should have been moist. The BBQ pork bun was just ok. We opted for the following items: -Shu mai/pork dumpling: This was pretty standard as well, but not as pretty in presentation as some other places and didn't have the black fungus or little fish eggs to top it off like at other places. -Shrimp dumpling: Pretty standard, nothing particularly unique. -Baked BBQ bun: This was pretty good! I liked the slight sweet glaze on the outside. The bread was chewy, and there was plenty of BBQ pork filling, which was flavored perfectly. It also wasn't too fatty. -Steamed custard bun: we ordered 3 but they only had 2 at the time we ordered, so they asked if we wanted a red bean bun or lotus bun. I had already paid, and didn't want to make a fuss of getting refunded or what not, so I opted for the lotus bun. The lotus bun was ok. It was a bit on the plain side and it seemed to have more bun than lotus paste. It took almost 1/3 of the way through to get to the filling. I can't really comment on the steam custard buns themselves since I ordered it for family. My family also ordered chicken feet (I didn't get to try), and some cocktail buns (also didn't get to try). Was excited to try this place, especially because I'm not fluent in speaking Chinese, I'm not comfortable ordering dim sum at places where they barely understand English. I was mainly excited to try the deep fried meat dumplings, those are my favorite, and this place makes them bigger than normal. I was a bit disappointed that there was barely any meat inside, but there was a lot of peanuts and other stuff. Service was good, I like how they come up to you and help you with your order by noting down what you want while giving us plenty of time to browse and decide. There's much less anxiety this way since I'm a bit indecisive and slow to know what I want. I wanted the red bags but they don't seem to always give them out. I had high expectations for Tai Pan because of all the hype. I was happy to learn this to-go dim sum & bakery was a short detour from work. They opened at 7:30am and it appeared I was their first customer. I had perused the online menu so had an idea of what I wanted, but also knowing that the display case will sway my final order, as it did. I got 3 pieces of Pork Shu Mai ($4.95), 3 pieces of Hai Gow ($4.95),1 Baked Hot Dog Bun ($2.50), Baked Green Onion Bun (3.45), 1 seasame ball (1.85), 1 fried shrimp ball (2.25), 3 baked pineapple bun (6.95), 16 oz congee - preserved eggs, pork ($5.50). Came out to about $32. I had the green onion bun first because I could smell it from the bag, it was so big that it did not fit in the bag. The soft slightly chewy texture was a perfect bite. Actually, I had to eat it in 3 sittings. I enjoyed the congee for lunch and it was delicious, nice flavor good amount of egg and pork, I liked the consistency, a little thicker than other places. The dim sum although huge portions, seemed lacking in flavor - definitely would pass on these items next time. The seasame ball (a little bigger than a golf ball) & fried shrimp ball aka a football shaped fried goodness was more than enough and satisfied that GBD craving. I didn't realize they had pineapple buns with and without custard, so I was sad to learn I had ordered the one without. By the time the cashier finished bagging my order there was at least 5 new people behind me, so I can see how this line can get backed up quickly. I will be back to try more baked goods, steamed buns, and reorder more congee. I will go to my regular sitdown dim sum spots for those cravings. read more

Parking can be challenging because there are so few spaces for all of the businesses' customers. I visited on a Sunday afternoon and there was a long line of patrons. But, the line went fairly quickly and there were staff taking orders ahead of time - which was great as my items were already at the counter by the time I got there. There are a large selection of dim sum and baked goods to choose from. Food was visible through glass - which was greatly appreciated. Prices were clearly identified. Staff were friendly and helpful. We tried the following items: Steamed BBQ Pork Buns Hai Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) Pork Shu Mai Seafood Shu Mai Shark Fin Dumplings Beef Rice Noodle (Cheung Fun) Sesame Balls Custard Buns Frozen Pork & Shrimp Won Ton Unfortunately, flavors fell flat for the items we chose. A strong competitor to ABC but I don't think it makes the cut. They definitely have more offerings and variety and the venue is a bit more modern. The staff here do not seem to communicate with each other. One young staff member said, "I'm afraid of the kitchen". Valid, given the age difference between the younger cashiers and the older aunties in the kitchen. I made my selection of various items and everything was available except the shrimp rice roll. I was asked if I'd like to wait but not given a time frame until I pressed. 5-10 minutes was promised and not delivered. Two different cashiers checked in with me while I was waiting but none could give me any time frame, adjusted or not. Almost 15 minutes later, I waved who I am assuming the manager over, an older gentleman, and he said he would go check with the kitchen. He explained that something was going on with the shrimp and they were still making it. Around 20 mins post-ordering, I finally received my order. Mind you, this was 9:30 AM on a Friday, not many customers and fully staffed. As for the food, the shrimp rice roll was good, but definitely not worth the 20 min extra wait and inconvenience. The taro cake was interesting and had bits lap cheong in it. The chive dumpling was such a disappointment! It was larger than what is typical and wrapped in a clear wrapper that was reminiscent of thick rice paper, very tough. The har gao and shu mai were both good, solid. I am especially partial to cream cheese wontons and those were good. The shrimp bell pepper was very good. And the shrimp ball was not typical, but had good flavor and texture. I was a little bit hesitant based on the reviews, but actually had a really great visit! Just goes to show you should always give a place a fair shot despite other people's experiences. We came on a Sunday morning and it smelled so good from all the fresh bread. There wasn't much in the cases by the window, but all of the hot food was ready and on display. They even have tables inside in case you want to eat right away, which is what we did. The baked bbq pork pineapple bun was really tasty! I only know of one other place that has these here so I was happy to find one that's closer to our house. We also got the other regular baked bbq pork bao but for some reason there was way less filling in those, so that's the reason for my 4 stars. Maybe we got a bad batch. The siumai and the shark fin dumplings were huge, and tasted great. The pricing is pretty fair here too. Service was awesome, they were very friendly! Only went for the 50% off discount on wednesdays. I didnt actually go but i got to try some of their things. Overall below par but decent since discount. I tried e hargow, seafood suimai, and sharkfin, and also the baked chasui bao. We also ordered pineapple chasui baos and they didnt give it to us... Personally wasnt a fan of the seafood suimai, i dont like peas and carrots which it had lol, and also didnt like the crab sticks that were in it because it jus tasted too fake and floury. Sharkfin dumpling was whatever, kinda fatty but if thats how it be. The most disappointing thing ive tried so far was the chasui bao. We cut it in half and my half was literally 98% bread 2% filling (picture included except i ate the crust off before i took pic lols). I really wanted to like this place but I think it needs a little time for it to be better. Staff was super nice!!! We came during their soft opening and it was fairly busy. The food... The shrimp rice noodle was super thick, almost boat noodle (thicker than a boat noodle) and it was very flour-y. The deep fried shrimp ball seemed like it was super oily and just a big ball of oil in my mouth, it was not crunchy at all and I wasn't really a fan of the batter that was used. Rating everything we had. In my opinion: Steamed Custard Bun 5/10 there was too much bun and the bun was dry. The custard was tasty but too thick. Hai Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) not sure didn't eat this. Pork Shu Mai 8/10 probably the best thing I had but I've had better. Seafood Shu Mai 2/10 least favorite, too much vegetable and a little fishy. Shark Fin Duplings 5/10 it's ok not my favorite Fried Meat Dumpling 2/10 it's not your traditional meat dumpling there's no minced pork but there's lots of Chinese sausage, which is very different. Fried Shrimp Ball 7/10 not your typical shrimp ball, it's breaded with panko breading. Stuffed Bell Pepper 3/10 way too big and the bell pepper was not cooked all the way. Turnip cake 3/10 super salty and also not your typical turnip cake, instead of dried shrimp it's filled with a lot of Chinese sausage again. Spam Mushubi 2/10 the rice was hard and dried up. Preserved Egg Pork Congee 2/10 the porridge was burnt and had a burnt taste. Food was a disappointment, hopefully they're still working out some kinks or training staff. The baked bbq pork bun was an hour wait. What I did finally get was shrimp dumpling (har gow), pork dumpling (siu mai), chicken feet (fun jow), and a steamed bbq pork bun. It was all pretty bland. The POS system went down, very understandable that's why I brought cash. The three star review is very generous for their grand opening but with a few quick serve dim sum options close by, I wish them the best of luck. read more

Am I the only one who gets super excited every time I see a new business open up in town? I literally jump for joy each and every time. We decided to pay Tai Pan a visit on an early Friday morning. To my surprise, it was vert crowded! The line was long, and there were a handful of people dining in. The place its nicely decorated and modern! The woman in front of me excitedly told the owner that her entire family have been waiting for this place to open. Based on the goods they offer, I can say that it was worth the wait! They have endless options of your favorite dim sum treats and more! Just a heads up, you can't just buy one of something , they price things as a deal, so for example: if you'd like to try their shrimp stuffed eggplant, they price it 2 for $6.95. They also dont do mix match bundles. For the price, you really do get your moneys worth because the portions are huge! So, why the two stars? It's pretty unorganized and everything we ordered lacked flavor (might be a good thing? maybe they don't use MSG?) They also don't provide any dipping sauces which didn't help either. I will say, there's definitely potential here though and I look forward to seeing them improve once they've settled into things. Tai Pan is now open! So great to see this family owned business in the Freeport neighborhood. Gorgeous fresh pillowy soft dim sum...made fresh daily onsite (you can even see them makijng it)! My faves so far: The Har Gao is a good size - larger but still able to pop in your mouth in one bite...and the fresh shrimp is soft and perfectly steamed. The shrimp and chive dumpling is fresh and perfectly balanced. And the peanut & coconut mochi is a perfect lightly sweet with a soft chewy mochi to balance the crunchy peanuts and tiny coconut flakes. First time trying this new place. Went in on a Sunday. There were only a few people in front of me so the wait wasn't bad. I ordered a baked pork bao, and the 3 of the pork sui mais. The baked bao was okay. My first two bites ended up being mostly bread. A little disappointing, however, the pork filing was good once I got to it. The Sui Mai tasted pretty good. Overall, this place is clean. I liked how everything was packaged and placed in a little red bag to go. I would try this place again. I would give it 3.5 stars if i could. read more

Arrived around 8am on a Sunday morning. Relatively clean and new. Line was short. ordering counter was quite high so i either had to tell or the employee had to walk around to take my order. they had additional goodies/ pastries on the side as well. Overall, the service was okay! Their paying system has to reboot a few times so i had to wait to pay. After coming home i've noticed that they charged me for a sushi roll in place of a spam masubi. however the masubi was only $3 and i was charged for about $5 something. Sui mai and the chive dumplings were pure favorite. only tow items i'd come back for. portions are large too. read more

For the past 5 weeks, I have come here to buy some dim sum and their congee. There is seating both indoors and outdoors. However, do not expect wait service Upon entering, all the baked, steamed and fried goodies are on the left side. If they are busy, they have people taking your order on paper and by the time you get to the cashier...pay and off you go My favorite is the fish congee. The congee is very tasty and they don't skimp on fish. On a previous visit, I bought the preserved egg n pork. It was just as delicious The "footballs" are huge...5" in length. In Chinese it's called ham shuia gwok. Filling is plentiful and they are hot and crispy. Another FAV is the turnip cakes. (Lobok go). When you bite into one, it's not chalky like others I've had. Great flavor and just enough of the chopped Chinese sausage and pieces of dried shrimp. They are pan fried perfectly. Only drawback is the parking lot is small and tight. I walked in and the first thing I noticed? This place is sparkling clean. Second thing? A bunch of happy customers hanging out, clearly in on a secret I was about to discover. The menu? The staff was super patient, answered all my random questions, and helped me pick out a few mystery dishes. And since everything is so affordable, you can take risks and try new things without feeling guilty if you pick something weird. We are stopping by to hang out with friends for a bite this morning. Mainly designed for carry out and pick up, they do have 4 tables inside and about 8 tables outside which for today's weather would be excellent. Especially seated across the street from William Land Park , a great spot to chill and sight see or people watch ordered our favs again, assortment of dim sum, peppered wings, fried shrimp balls, eggplant, and pork spareribs. We did not try the fried shrimp balls last time, wow they are sooo huge! Nice light fried outside layer.
