Found this place on yelp, I was craving some bun Bo hue and found this place. Very hidden in the corner of an Asian plaza and a bit run down. Would've never noticed it, had it not been for yelp. Once you walk in, it's your typical Vietnamese restaurants. Theres no bathroom inside but had to ask the staff, and she led me to a bathroom that was on the side of a building, with a lock you need a key for. Very gross and not well kept. Felt like a public bathroom but it was locked up as the employee told me that the whole building shares the one bathroom. Other than that, the food was decent We ordered a bun bo hue and a chicken pho. Very flavorful and tasty. Small size was really small. I also ordered a sugarcane dragonfruit juice. I really liked that. The ladies there were super nice. Had to ask for water refills but it was okay. read more

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and were seated right away. My friend and I wanted to try their specials for the month and got bun rieu and bun cha. Our food arrived fairly quickly after we ordered. It was an elder lady that served us and she was really nice. The bun rieu is very traditional, the real northern style bun rieu without all the fuss. It is very different from the southern style if people dont know know and were expecting something different. The broth was sweet and tasty. I ordered the larger and ate it all without passing out after. My friend ordered the bun cha and it too was delicious. I would have asked for more cha patties, and less grilled pork. This place is a little hidden. I have driven past this place many times and have never noticed it until I looked up Vietnamese restaurant on yelp! Saw it had some decent reviews so I gave it a try with my family. We got there and it was at the corner of the plaza. The inside was clean and did not look like anything outside. We were immediately seated, and the lady was very nice. We started off with their wings (3 garlic soy sauce and 3 salt and pepper drums/wings) and their pork spring rolls. The appetizer came out fresh. I personally would probably do without the wings next time. It was fresh and not bad but there were too much breading on it. The fresh spring rolls were good along with their sauce. We ordered their chicken pho, bun bo hue, fried rice, and their vermicelli noodle bowl with grill pork. I've been seeing videos of the Bun Rieu on my social media so I was excited to finally try it. Unfortunately, it's was only ok. It was a little on the sour side and the broth lacked flavor. The noodles were cooked perfectly though. We also ordered salt and pepper chicken wings, but it was dry. My parents love Vietnamese duck noodle soup, along with pork intestines and blood sausages. After doing some research on Yelp, I found this place. We arrived around 2pm on a Friday and there was only one other customer. Initially, my parents tried to order in Vietnamese but it seems like this place is a Chinese owned restaurant and they don't speak Vietnamese. Therefore, we communicated with them in Cantonese. We ordered 3 duck noodle soups, pork blood sausage & liver heart, and charbroiled pork over rice. As for flavor, the duck noodle soup was just okay. The soup was lightly seasoned and the duck was super chewy and dry. My daughter's rice dish had thinly sliced pork that was so dry that it tasted like jerky. No comment on the pork blood sausage & liver heart appetizer. Since I'm not into organs, I didn't try it. My dad had to use the restroom and was told that the restroom was outside the restaurant. When my dad came back, he said it looked like a communal restroom for the whole building and it was super dirty. Parking is plentiful. So I came here and ordered the Bun Cha Dong Xuan, pork meatballs with vermicelli noodles. It was excellent, very simple and down to earth. A hidden gem out in the open! Loyal people have been coming here for 30 years I hear and although I'm late to the game, I'll def be eating here for the next 30 years. I've ordered the Bun cha Hanoi style several times! Its a warm noodle dish deconstructed with powerful savory and tangy notes served with a healthy serving of herbs and veggies. This dish originated from the capital of Vietnam which is Hanoi. For this dish. every ingredient is served separated and you can essentially put together your soup anyway and any style you want to. 2nd dish on mind but tied for number 1 in my heart is the Bun Rieu. Its served super piping hot and I mean steam clouds burn your lips hot and its the chefs kiss perfect remedy for a cold stormy winter weekend. Its savory flavored from a pork base, some definite tangyness from the tomatoes and a hit of crab which somehow all mixes together to completely confuse the mind outta me but convincingly makes sense in the mouth. Taste buds got smacked with some unexpected complexity for sure. I want moaar. They've also amped up their decor with a recent remodel and their menu has been updated too. Unfortunately, Pho Bolsa just didn't do it for me. - Bun rieu: I love a good bowl of bun rieu and have had it so many times at many restaurants, including home-cooked ones. However, the bun rieu here is just way too tart for my liking. Where's the crabby flavor? Where are the chunky crab pieces? Where's the pork blood? - Pho dac biet: this was so flavorless. Pho broth is usually so fragrant, rich, and satisfying. My bowl lacked all the great blended flavors from the star anise to the charred onions. The sliced meat also tasted really off. When it came, the sliced meat was still slightly raw but brown. It should be red when uncooked or still slightly pink from being in the hot broth. What a complete disappointment. - Goi cuon (shrimp and pork): these were the only good things I've had at Pho Bolsa, but you can't really mess that up. Cook the shrimp or pork, throw in your veggies and herbs, and roll it up. read more

Was craving bun mang vit. Duck and bamboo noodle soup. My order was taken quickly but my food took forever to come out. It wasn't that busy. When the food came out I was disappointed. It wasn't what I expected at all. It was so disappointing that I didnt even want to take a photo. The dish usually has boiled duck on bed of salad and you can pour or dip ginger fish sauce on it. My duck was already in the soup and I just got a few herbs to throw in. The duck was a bit tough. The broth just tasted like chicken broth. Sadly my craving was not satisfied. After a year of renovations, Pho Bolsa is finally back! Pho Bolsa is an iconic Pho restaurant that has been in sac since 1991. The remodel of the restaurant itself is amazing and they updated their menu as well. Some items were taken away and some new items were added. I got the chicken pho ga and it was so good. The meat was tender and their portions and pricing can't be beat. You can pick your noodle and meat type (dark, white, mix) as well. Great customer service, ambiance, and food. I had been by several months ago, and they were closed for a complete remodeling. I heard that they had reopened, so I came down for lunch. As great as always... The inside remodel is beautiful! Clean, fresh, and it looks brand new. Everybody was friendly as they have always been. They are on a bit of a limited menu right now, but they still do have a good number of items. They told me that they will be expanding the menu soon. I went with my old standby, the rice porridge. I had the pork offal rice porridge. They asked me if I wanted a big bowl or a small bowl. I took the small bowl, because I knew that it would easily fill me up. It did. The porridge was creamy and delicious, and I loved the offal... Rich, With a bit of an earthy flavor. The prices have gone up a little bit, as they have everywhere. But for what you get, they are still extremely reasonable! Service-the vibe was weird, they got Vietnamese rap music on CD, but the entire time, it's skipping and stuttering and nobody bothered to changed the disc, the Asian lady that took our order, she doesn't speak Vietnamese. Bun Bo Hue had the pork blood, a few slices of cha lua (Vietnamese ham) 1 piece of pork and and ONE piece of beef and ONE piece of tendon, this is the star of the dish, and the beef and tendon is not edible, it's like trying to chew on rubber, the one piece of pork was barely edible, the broth was ok. The pork chop over rice, it wasn't grilled, more like deep fry because it was dry and chewy. The bun rieu, it was subpar, the pho tai, we ordered with no onions and scallions, it arrived with a handful of onions and scallions. I didn't want to spend the next 10 minutes picking everything out, so I asked them to remake it, they were not busy, we're the only table there. The Pho tai came back out, I can still see pieces of scallions floating around, the beef was very tender, but the broth was bland. The pho was for my 8 year old, that's all he eats, he's eaten pho at many restaurants, my other son is a pork chop kid, that's his go to dish, from the Bay Area, up to Sacramento, and Folsom. After paying and as we walked out, both kids said "dad, let's never come back here", my wife agrees. I can't believe I've been sleeping on Pho Bolsa. This place is such a hidden gem and I feel very fortunate to have found it on my way to one of the supermarkets on Stockton Blvd. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted and given menus. When the waiter noticed that my partner's cup had cracked, he apologized and replaced it with a another cup. The pho...(insert drooling)...was everything. Flavorful and not over powering. Piping hot with noodles cooked just right. Now, I'll be honest, at most pho restaurant, I typically find myself adding just a tad bit more fish sauce; however, at Pho Bolsa, I knew it right away when I took the first sip of the broth that the only thing I wanted to add was just the chili oil. My friend wanted to go here as it was somewhere she grew up going to. They are located in south Sacramento near a grocery store, it is definitely a "hole in the wall" but let me tell you, it is one of the best hole in the walls I've had for pho. The pho noodles had really good broth, the egg rolls were delicious, and the crab soup noodles were even better. The ladies there were so nice, they were quick to take our order and quick to bring us our order. THEY ARE RENOVATING. Pho Bolsa has been around since 1991 and I believe the original owners has since sold the place to the new Owners. Why or how do I know? For one, the place has been remodeled to be cleaner & up to date with decor. Simple & elegant are what I would describe the interior. Another clue is the menu of the food and the new meeting the Owners. The traditional Pho (both beef & chicken) are still there but they added some other items like the Bamboo soup & sweet/sour fish soup, etc... They no longer offer any traditional Vietnamese appetizers like springs rolls, egg rolls, etc.... We tried the Bun Rieu n Beef stew with big chow fun style noodles. Both were delicious in flavor with veggie offerings ( herbs, been sprouts, shredded cabbage , cilantro) If you want a something a little different but still some good Viet food on menu Give them a try.... read more

Came here awhile ago. Waited 45 mins to get our bowls of beef pho. Pho came out looking like broth is made of just plain water with no taste at all, just bland and clear as the water. No joke. I have been waiting for Pho Bolsa to reopen for the longest time because I missed their affordable prices and Vietnamese-chinese style bún riêu(shrimp crab paste tomato noodle soup) with thick rice noodles. When I was a pescatarian, this was my go-to because they don't use pork in it like most Vietnamese restaurants. After the reconstruction, their prices have finally caught up with the economy. The then $6.50 bowl of noodles had doubled to $15 and their portion sizes have gotten smaller, with the flavor slightly sweeter than what I had remembered. I saw the previous owners working in the kitchen, but the front was manned by an unfamiliar face. He was probably learning the business because he kept returning to the kitchen to ask questions. Definitely a work in progress because I wasn't handed any utensils or napkins after my food arrived and had to get it myself so the service was slow and lacking. Maybe because they just reopened, but their menu shrunk to a one-pager and even so, there was a lot of items on the current menu that weren't available. The Vietnamese coffee tasted like the Lee ones that you can buy at Costco because they didn't have their dripper yet. The price was one of the main reasons that I came back before and that is now long gone. A lot of pho places have been popping up around my area so I wouldn't need to make a further trip to Stockton Blvd, but if they do increase the menu, or at least have everything, I might give it another go. read more

When I first moved to Sacramento 21 years ago, Pho Bolsa was my comfort spot whenever I missed my family. Their Northern-style beef phở had a clean, bold broth with tender slices of beef that could cure homesickness for a few hours. The elderly couple who owned the place were absolute sweethearts. The owner always gave me extra broth because she knew I wouldn't waste a drop. I stopped going for many years and recently came back after noticing the remodel. Ordered bún chả and beef phở to-go. Sadly... I was shook. The chả was dry even sitting in sauce, the veggies looked rationed, and the phở broth -- this one hurt -- tasted bland, like dishwater with ambition. To be fair, customer service was good, the greeter was friendly, and the food came out quickly. I also noticed the staff speaking Chinese, so ownership or operations may have changed over time. Nothing wrong with change. Someone told me the original owners came back. So I had to come back and see for myself. Original boss lady and best daughter are back in business. Representing Asian food and culture the best way possible. Friendly atmosphere, they remember you, and most importantly good food that is always spot on. They are taking it easy due to the big boss no longer being around, and may close early due to this. The daughter helps out in the afternoons due to having another restaurant downtown, and comes to help out her mother. Original Asian family restaurant and family style meals. You get the real deal here. This place will remind you of an old village restaurant in your neighborhood. Very friendly family atmosphere. Prices are the updated price, but worth it big time. The daughter told me the polite way that there was no large when I asked for it to go, and my coffee was spot on. The boss lady made my bun rieu and I was very happy eating it when I got home. I am very happy to see the original owners. No boss man so probably no more Asian donuts. Call before you come, just in case they close early. Came back today because I was craving bun rieu for lunch. Got sat down quickly and order immediately because I knew what I wanted. Few minutes after ordering, I got my food. I put in some add-ins to my bowl and mixed it together. I grab a bite of noodles and in my chopsticks I see a hair. I told my waiter and she apologized and took it away and told me that she would bring me a new bowl. A new bowl came and I was eating it. When I was about done, I found another hair in my bowl.... I got up to the register to tell my waiter, while she calculates my total. After I told her about finding another hair in my second bowl, she only gave me a 30% discount off my total. Nice people!!! Food was delicious as I had the wonton noodle soup was filling and tasty. I also ordered pho chicken soup and my daughter loved it!! Then tried both of the wing appetizers aka salt n pepper and the sweet and spicy wings was outstanding. The only complaint was when I got the soups and asked for hoisin, soy sauce and chili oil they put it all together in one condiment container.
