Ambiance - family style izakaya. Service - very good. We were immediately seated. Service was fast and efficient. Food - we came here for lunch. I ordered a chicken teriyaki, California roll combo and my friend ordered the shrimp tempura lunch. The chicken teriyaki combo was around $18.50 and the tempura was $14.50, I think. The price is very reasonable for the amount of food you get. The chicken was tender and flavorful, the tempura was crispy but not greasy and the Cali roll was fresh and had depth of flavor. You can't go wrong here. The meals are always satisfying. Love this place.

The staff here are the sweetest, most caring Japanese ladies and they will not rush you and they will make you feel so taken care of. Immediate comfort. The space is a little dated but in the best way, feels like a rustic little spot in Japan and honestly that's the whole charm. Went for lunch and did the build your own teishoku. Got tempura and sushi, my coworker went sesame chicken, sushi, and veggie tempura. The portion size is MASSIVE and suddenly very clear why it's $20-25. I had leftovers and I was not expecting that. The food genuinely reminded me of home cooking. Warm, comforting, made with care. Vast menu so there's truly something for everyone. One tiny thing: canned green beans with mayo came with the meal. Very Japanese, very classic, very much not for me personally. But that's between me and the green beans. A hidden gem. Go for lunch, clear your afternoon, and let the auntie energy wash over you.

Happy hours are an important part in Orange County's restaurant culture. We want a place that's welcoming and servers are kind. Specifically, me and my wife were craving Japanese food that reminded us of our time in Osaka or Tokyo. That's why we come to Taiko for Happy hour! Food was fantastic as always, we always get the tempura and sesame chicken. Lots of food with this one, and the chicken is fresh. Miso soup is amazing with it. We also like to get tuna rolls and 2 bottles of Sapporo. The dodger game was on so it was a fun environment. Servers are very attentive and good at what they do. They also have a rewards system so look at that for future discounts. We'll be returning often to Taiko, it's really a comforting atmosphere to enjoy Japanese cuisine!

Lots of options- sushi, udon, plates. I went with Teriyaki chicken- it was flavorful and tender. Rainbow roll was good. Portion sizes are on the bigger side. Service was good. Place was big inside and lots of tables.

Taiko is one of the main Irvine Japanese gems that brings back so many memories. Every time I come here, I just have memories of large beautifully plated meals and friendly waiters/waitresses. I'm so glad they made it through COVID and still have pretty decent sized portions. My husband and I love coming here for an easy and delicious date night. I usually order the salmon teriyaki and chicken and they're both so so yummy. The salmon is always cooked so perfectly. He likes to order the California roll and chicken teriyaki and those are both good too. Overall we enjoy the experience and food of Taiko!

Used to come as a kid and it's been quite some time! Got a togo order and portion was reasonable. Also 10/10 for putting the teriyaki on the side for the bento. Would come back

Taiko is a cute hole in the wall located in Irvine off of Jeffrey. I love this spot because of their diverse Japanese food selection. The menu consists of items like sushi, sashimi, udon, tempura, and other Japanese classics like teriyaki or mackerel. The food here is very afforable even during this time of increasing food cost. A prime example of this is the Lunch Specials and Teishoku meal sets. The Udon & Una Don lunch special only costs $21.90, but comes with a massive piece of eel. All the employees are so friendly here. There's a lady who works here that speaks English, Japanese, and Korean fluently, which makes it much more welcoming for a wider variety of guests.

    Liz B.

A delicious and authentic Japanese spot with great combos! The tempura and nigiri combo was more than enough food, and I left feeling full sand satisfied. It came with a generous amount of salad, shrimp and veggie tempura, and five nigiris. The sushi was fresh and delicious, and the tempura was light and crispy. I also a bite of sesame chicken from another person's combo, and it was tasty and came with a lot! The interior is very cozy and feels like an authentic Japanese restaurant, and the service was great. I will definitely add this spot to my rotation!

Food is amazing with huge portions but if you don't like a noisy restaurant with a long wait then this isn't the place for you. Also the waiting area in the front is pretty dirty or maybe just old? There was water on the floor. This place has been around for a long time so the interior is pretty worn down. They really need a renovation.

Love these portions! Another day, another salmon collar! This one was huge, nice and fatty, and perfectly charred. The vibes are great here, feels like traditional Japanese restaurant. The service was excellent, the food came out super quick, what a great time!

Haven't been here in many, many years and recently a co worker wanted to come here for lunch. We were greeted right away, and our attention immediately went to their lunch specials. I got the sesame chicken with tempura and wow. Their portions are HUGE. The other food items we got: chicken rice bowl with udon lunch special, sushi with tempura lunch special, and an eel roll to share. The portions were so big that we all took leftovers to go. Food was delicious - will def be coming back to try more items! At around $20 for their lunch specials, you're definitely getting the most bang for your buck!

Taiko is a very cute Japanese restaurant with such friendly staff. It's also conveniently located near other shops for dessert/skincare/makeup shops if you'd like to walk before or after your meal. Portion sizes for some dishes are pretty generous! The salmon nigiri that I ordered was fatttt. The charashi was also very worth the price. We spent about $60 (tad pricy) per person and were both full/had some leftovers. Of everything we ordered the only one I wouldn't order again is the takoyaki just because I'd like more sauce.

    Christina N.

Taiko is a great Japanese spot with a standard menu and generous portions. The service is quick, but that also means everyone gets served at different times. I ordered the sesame chicken and udon combination, which was more than enough food. They're both nearly full-size servings of each meal instead of a half-and-half style combo. The udon was as expected, and I get why the sesame chicken is so popular here. It was well-cooked, had a good flavor, and balanced well with the other veggies in the rice bowl.

From the valet to the nice waiting area and the seafood displayed over ice when you walk in, everything had a very upscale feel. Once seated, the bread and butter started us off right. We ordered a few cocktails and every one was really good. For food, we went IN on the seafood. We got the chilled shellfish platter, calamari, seafood pasta, sea bass, and a seafood soup that was probably one of my favorites. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and prepared really well. The chilled platter especially was such a nice presentation with the oysters, shrimp, lobster, mussels and scallops. The seafood pasta was also so good. Rich without overpowering the seafood, and the shrimp were huge. Definitely on the pricier side, but this is one of those places where the food, atmosphere, and overall experience matched the occasion. Perfect way to celebrate surviving tax season. 9.5/10

He was really friendly and very helpful throughout our meal. I ordered the Wild Pacific Halibut, it was decent. We order brussels sprouts for the table to share. The brussels sprouts were ok, not my favorite. We also ordered one Kumamoto oyster for each person at the table. The oysters were really smooth and creamy, I would definitely recommend. For my drink I order The Pessimist. It is a NA take on an old fashioned. For the price I wouldn't recommend The Pessimist, because it tastes a little watered down. We were celebrating my birthday so the restaurant brought out a complimentary pazookie which is really nice. Everything on the menu is à la carte. I found the prices to be a little high for the portions that were served. The ambience is nice. They have a raw bar if you want to pull up for oysters. There is indoor and outdoor seating. I would recommend the Water Grill if you ate ok with spending a little more on a meal and are craving seafood.

Totally understandable as it's peak summer, and a weekend, they get busy. The restaurant was hot and humid. Now I'm sure they have AC, and even with all the windows and patio doors being open, they really should have opted to use the AC. The entire dining experience was uncomfortable. We ate our meal literally sweating. Even our server was sweating lol All our drinks went room temp in a matter of 10 minutes, we had to repeatedly ask for glasses of ice from the bar just to try and mitigate our body temperatures somehow. Also, the booth itself was incredibly tacky. And I don't mean visually tacky, I mean the texture. The feeling of plastic when it gets really old and it feels sticky to the touch, that tacky. You couldn't slide in or out of that booth if your life depended on it. And again, considering how humid and hot the interior was, it only made it worse. The lighting was also so dim that it gave the vibes of being sat in the corner of a musky Denny's diner lol. Halfway through our meal they turned the lights off for dinner service (I get it, to set the mood) but it made the table so dark we had to ask them to turn them back on so we could see the food on our plates. It wasn't that the entire restaurant was dim, it's certain tables (and sadly ours was definitely one of them) We had a party of 6, and one person got their meal well before the rest of the table. We of course insisted she begin eating, which she did, and our remaining meals came out as soon as she was done with hers. The waiter removed her plate as he set down everyone else's lol. The food was good, but, again with how uncomfortable the environment was, it was hard to enjoy. The restaurant was also fairly empty throughout our meal. We got there before 5 so that awkward "linner" time frame. Even so, we had to flag down our waiter for another round of drinks, water, etc. The Shorebird absolutely has stunning views, and that's what they're known for. Their food is solid, mist dishes fairly justifies the high price point. This visit was just not their best. Overall service and ambiance, fell extremely flat. I set the bar high for my guests, as they traveled in from out of town and I raved about my experience from a few months back. Granted, I was sat at the patio, overlooking the beautiful view, and the service was impeccable. With all the stellar dining options in Newport, unless you find yourself at a table on the balcony, I don't think Shorebird is the obvious choice. You'll end up spending the money regardless so you may as well look for a spot that is guaranteed to meet the expectations of the price point without having to be dependent on a view.

For entrees we got the lean and mean plate with sea bass. It comes with salad and rice, we substituted the rice for black beans. We also got the skirt steak "bulgogi" which was served on top of mushrooms and bok choy with a sweet soy sauce. They accidentally brought out salmon instead of sea bass, but were very apologetic. They brought out a sea bass on the side and comped the entree to make up for it. Great service right there! The salmon and seabass were both delicious and cooked perfectly. The steak was tender and juicy, full of flavor. As a birthday gift they brought out a thai milk tea blondie sundae which was soooo good! Get it if you like sweets. I wish the owners all the best in their future endeavors, they created a great restaurant that many will miss. Thanks to all the servers, hostesses, cooks, and bussers as well for making my birthday dinner so special!

We came on a Friday night at 5:40 and was seated right away. A big restaurant with lots of seating and best to come with a group of people so you can order a variety of dishes. With that being said, restaurant is loud and packed. The staff is friendly and quick to help. Now, on to the food...it is so delish! Everything comes hot piping HOT, well seasoned, and oh so flavorful. I don't think I can pick one dish that's my favorite. Definitely coming back to try more of their dishes.

We got the spicy stir fried squid, filet mignon udon noodles, abalone, and clams with cheese. The squid was probably my favorite, the sauce had so much flavor and the squid was cooked perfectly with a really good texture. I just wish the bell peppers were cooked a little more. The filet mignon was super tender, and I loved the chewy udon noodles and sauce. The abalone and cheesy clams were also really good. We also tried the coconut kumquat and the strawberry soda version, both refreshing and flavorful. I liked the ambiance too. My only complaint was the service. We had to flag our waiter down a few times and eventually went to the front to pay after waiting longer than expected. They did give us a free dessert though, which was a nice surprise. Overall, the food absolutely delivered and I'd come back. 9/10

This place isn't popular enough!…read more We walked here after enjoying a fun day looking at the pet farm, winning some prizes at the fair, and built an appetite! Jack o lantern fair was just a few blocks away but we were craving seafood and we decided on Seafood 1555. Oh my gosh. We shared a steak burrito and two octopus& shrimp tacos & it was grilled to perfection. They also had 7 types of salsa as well as the fresh one they make on site. I mean I need to come back and order again because it's worth it all! Just walk behind the parking lot when you enter the church, it's behind the car repairs. And they make it looks like a farmers market with about 3-4 businesses serving food and desserts :) Service was amazing they asked if we needed any thing and we were the only customers remaining so they were patient and didn't rush us at all. Super kind cook. Pop up chairs, canopies, and beautiful dishes were served. Don't think twice. Go order some stellar seafood tacos today!!

You can feel that they care, and it makes the whole experience even better. The shrimp tacos were loaded--generous, fresh, and insanely flavorful. Every bite was satisfying, not skimpy in the slightest, and perfectly balanced. The kind of tacos you think about later and immediately want again. And don't sleep on the chips and salsa. So many places treat it as an afterthought, but here it was very, very good--fresh, flavorful, and the perfect start to the meal. Great food, generous portions, and standout service. Seafood 1555 is a must-visit and an easy recommendation. We'll absolutely be back.
