Our dog always pulled us into Tails when we took walks in SLO downtown. With all the goodies and friendly staff, who could blame him, though. The store had a cool family vibe, with a lot of neat stuff for pets. Our dog would keep circling around inside the store and wouldn't want to leave. The display case were full of gorgeous cookies and treats so irresistible we couldn't really stop at buying one, and our dog would gobble them up with joy. I love the small, family-owned vibe stores, especially pet stores! We had actually been before a couple years ago and we came back to town to do some shopping and exploring, and decided to come by again! Like most smaller pet supply stores and boutiques, the cat section is small. A bit of a bummer since that is a common occurrence. But the selection they do have is really good quality and cute. I bought some catnip and a couple toys! The catnip seems to come in a high quality container and has very little stalks, if any. The larger brands of catnip have the stalks which are almost as hard as wood so I worry about my cats choking on it or something. Not the brands they have here! Everything seems really well made and high quality. I'll definitely continue coming back here everytime I'm in town. Cashier was super friendly and nice. They also accept Apple Pay, which is a plus! I've decided to switch my dog to raw food to see if it helped with his stomach issues. The food I wanted to try was available for purchase at the downtown location. The owner was there when I came in the first time and I told him I was trying the food out for the first time. He was nice and said he has a good return policy, he doesn't even require a receipt, as long as the bag isn't completely empty I can return it if my dog doesn't like the food. The first bag I bought seemed to be okay on my dog's stomach, so I came back and bought two more bags ($50 each). On the second bag, my dog started having terrible issues and I could not get him to adjust to the food, so I had to go back to the food he was eating before. I just brought the food back to the store to get a refund and the demeanor of the owner was completely different. He told me he never said I'd get a refund, only store credit. I told him that in our original conversation he very much gave the impression that it was an easy return/ refund process and never said anything about store credit, which is SUPER misleading. I would've never bought a second bag if I had known it was store credit only because there's nothing else I would need to purchase from there. Instead of having good customer service he became defensive and continued to definitively tell me he never said refund, so it was my mistake. Completely unethical. So poor customer service and overpriced pet supplies is what you get at this store. Also, I previously made two trips from AG to the slo Ranch location and they were closed both times when their hours showed they'd be open. I called the other store to find out if anyone was coming to open and I was told they've shortened their hours bc it hasn't been busy. They have little birthday cakes for dogs and personalized cookies for dogs. So many enrichment toys and treats I've only seen online but they have it in person. Bubba and I had so much fun checking out this store. He loved the variety of smells, treats and toys and was wagging his tail more than usual! The employees are so kind and gave my dog space to sniff around and also gave him some treats that he loved very much! Very bad customer service, Incredibly rude. I worked as a veterinarians assistant for years and the man at the counter (without a mask) was giving us critical insight as to our dogs vaccinations. I did not want to get into it with him and I have social anxiety so it pretty much ruined my day. We stopped by Tails before going out to dinner because we needed something to keep our puppy occupied while we ate. The people working were so friendly and kind to us and our pup--they welcomed us in and gave her a treat while we perused the shop. Tails had a pretty wide collection of toys, snacks, food, and outfits for pets so we found what we needed (a chew) and bought a few extra bandanas while we were there. LOVE this shop! I took my rescue, Lily in to get a new harness because I hadn't been able to find one with a front clip that fit her right (wide chest, tapered body). The lady at the front took such good care of us - helping adjust each strap to make sure it fit right, showing me how it worked, giving Lily cookies for being good about the off/on of the harness, keeping her calm (Lily is shy), and helping me with other random questions I thought of while we were there. They have unique and fashionable pet items that you won't ever find at the chain pet stores. Collars, carriers, toys, bowls, bedding, specialty food, and more. Everything is over priced (like the damn theatre!), but what do you expect from a boutique store in Downtown SLO? It's all high-quality stuff so it's not such a bad deal. I came in for a unique cat collar and found their selection to be adequate. Prices are on par with custom collars found on Etsy.com ($7-$20), which was my back-up plan if I didn't find anything at Tails. The staff were friendly and make the experience a pleasant one. If you buy a collar there (which I did), you can also have an ID tag made on-site for $4 more. They come in red, magenta, purple, gold, and black, shaped like fire hydrants, bones, circles, and hearts. You can also buy a specialty tag for $12+ depending on style and size, but those are made off-site, so you would just fill out the paperwork there and then the tag would be mailed to you at a later date. They also have a small pet treat selection to choose from (reminiscent of a bakery), though I didn't buy any. Wish they had a store like this in Fresno. It's much nicer than shopping at Petsmart in terms of fashion and variety. read more

My daughter and I stopped into Tails while on a college tour. We were helped by a couple of very sweet young ladies. We were surprised by the affordable prices, fun selection, and loved a collar they had. We bought the studded collar for our six year old Golden, and the assistant talked us into going larger. I was skeptical, but took her advice. Unfortunately when we got home the collar was far too large and slipped easily off my girls head, even on the tightest fitting. Tails customer service, had us send the pink collar back and Neil, the owner replaced it via USPS and called me to let me know it's on it's way. My new fav store for my doggy! I've walked past it so many times but never stopped bc I assumed it would be too expensive. So glad I finally went in bc I was wrong!! Prices are totally comparable to the big chain pet stores if not cheaper and they have a way better selection of gourmet dog treats and really cute accessories. I purchased a raiders jersey for my dog and it was too small. I was able to easily exchange it for a larger size without any hassle. The customer service was wonderful both times I stoped by here. Adorable little shop- perfect for folks who like to pamper their pets. Only came in to kind of look around since we had our furbaby with us but really didn't have a need per se... we were immediately and warmly greeted and our little guy was offered some treats which he LOVED (and he's hard to please) --- we ended up spotting the cutest outfit at which the staff offered to help us with putting it on him... they were FABULOUS-- and the outfit looked too cute to pass up. Things may be a tad over priced but there is no doubt that everything from their collars to dog food are all high quality! My Bebe absolutely loved all the treats I got for her (kiwi wrapped in chicken, liver chips. Bebe was initially very afraid of the store-- she kept her eyes and tail down the whole time! I was impressed by how well the staff treated her and Bebe left with her tail and ears up! The staff definitely knew what they were doing and absolutely loved pets! Great little store. We stumbled upon it after we visited the gumball alley. Our dog Jedi decided he wanted to go and we didn't even notice it was a pet store. So many cute stuff. Lots of toys, and great selection of food, and other needed items for dogs or cats. We let Jedi choose something as we ways do and he couldn't decided on something. The two ladies working where giving him so much attention and treats and he was in love. He finally decided on a dinosaur plush toy. The prices aren't bad at all. We always support local stores instead of bigger chain stores. We will be back for sure next time we are visiting slo. read more

Not the cheapest pet store, no, but here is why I kept going: Buy 6 Get 1 free. Essentially, everytime you purchase food, you get stamped witht the amount. So if you buy 6 items at say $30, you'd get your seventh item free (no time expiration)! As a two cat owner person, that adds up super quick and makes it a lot cheaper than going to petco or petsmart. Plus, food is much higher quality. In addition they have friendly staff who always offer up advice and often offer to come outside the store to put your purchases in your car, so you dont need to schlep the 40 pound bag of catfood you just bought the four blocks to your parking spot. Just pull up, honk, and they'll bring it out. How awesome is that?! read more

I've always really liked Tails when I take my boys on a walk; the staff are friendly, give the dogs treats, and have wide enough isles to maneuver. They usually have fun stuff to peruse also. As for daily visits for nothing in particular I would give them a hearty 5 stars. I gave them 3 stars because I went in for a specific dog food the other day for which they were listed as a local retailer. They had some of the options, but not the one that I wanted. A lady asked me if I needed help, and I indicated that I was looking for Orijen Tundra. At first her and another employee told me Orijen does not make a Tundra. I said that it was new and that I was really hoping to switch my dogs (a lab and a doberman, lots of food) over to it. The lady informed me that their provider does not carry all of the lines, but did not indicate if she knew whether or not they carried Tundra. After about 30 seconds of awkwardly staring at one another I thanked her and left. I understand that as a small retailer they cannot have everything on hand; however, she could at least have discussed similar options with me, taken my information and offered to check with their provider, inquired as to the reasons I wanted to switch, etc.... Particularly with such an expensive food I think that it would benefit them in the long run to follow through when a regular customer is standing there, essentially saying, "I would like to spend $173/mo on this food that you supposedly carry." I was very disappointed with their service as a specialty pet store in that instance, and intend to go back to a working relationship of bully sticks and novelty goods. I will not rely on them carrying a food that I need, or taking that extra step to obtain it. read more

Though much of the store is dedicated to doggie products, I still found some worthy kitty things. First, I highly recommend getting pet tags engraved here. For much cheaper than the machines at Petco or PetSmart, you get a really nice, lasting tag. I really appreciated the woman who helped me going ahead and double-engraving the name and phone number so it would be easier to see and last longer. I didn't even think of that, and I'm so glad I chose Tails to do it! Another employee recommended the bonito flakes for kitties (they look just like fish food, or the fish flakes topped on some Japanese dishes). My cats obsessed over the treats just as she said. Overall, I enjoyed paying boutique prices (other than the tag engraving) for the quality products and especially the assistance of a very passionate staff. And the best part? Their loyalty/rewards system. It's amazing. Just average your last 6 visits purchase price... and the 7th visit you get that average off your next purchase!! My husband and I stopped by this store out of curiosity during our visit to SLO from San Jose. And we are so grateful that we did! Besides a large variety of sophisticated pet supplies that we don't find in stores like Petco or PetSmart and what not, we received very concrete advice from the staff on solving our kitten's litter box issues that led us to deeply understand all possible causes for our kitten's problem. We did extensive online research on this issue, but the lady (sorry we didn't get her name)'s explanation beat all the online articles with her sharp analysis based on her obviously long, personal experience with cats. What surprised us was that when she introduced some helpful products we could use for the litter box issue, she did not try to sell any of those products to us at all, knowing we are from San Jose. Instead she just wrote down the name of the product and told us to go online. The fact that she genuinely just wanted to help us really touched us so much and earned our solid trust in this store's values. No wonder they have high quality supplies. Besides the litter box issue, she gave us advice on cat diet and how to get our kitten out when she's hiding herself under a bed or sofa. She even gave us a little bag of cat treats for free so we could use it to lure our kitten out. We felt that she really cared about our kitten. We love this store so much and truly wish we had a store like this in San Jose, too. In this day and age when literally any pet supplies can be purchased online, what the customer really wants to achieve by visiting a pet store is not just to purchase products, but receive a pet expert's advice! I'm leaving this on (slo) tails because there isn't a tails Santa Maria on Yelp. Slo tails is great by all means but the one in Santa Maria needs more. Overall there is more dog toys then cats it feels like a dog store. I went in on Friday the 17th I have been a few times but I felt I should voice my opinion for improvement, and was disappointed. There were two workers a guy and a girl everything seemed fine I was greeted by the girl which is fine. But as I'm in the store I notice the boy sitting on the counter where it looked like there was product can't really see because he's blocking it. The girl was nice and pleasant to be helped by and I was pleased with which is why I'm not going 0 stars, but for a small business it would be nice to see all workers being courteous and professional. He was on his phone didn't look up once and didn't even get up to ring me. All these youngsters now a days are glued do these devices. It's not how it used to be. I have been in multiple times and it's always the same thing or they play non family friendly. I used to be a punk rocker back in my teens definitely not family friendly and the music of choice is punk rock? Definitely not ok for a small business.
