Kevin Chen mindfully and intentionally teaches the why and the how of each progressive tai chi movements. Supportive and Encouraging- Tai chi takes lots of practice and hard work, but Kevin Chen makes it easy by interacting with each student of varying ability levels. As a retired educator, I am in several of his Tai chi/Qi Gong classes in diverse environments of senior centers, CSA retired school administrators zoom, church group, and community centers. Kevin Chen goes the extra mile by not only teaching tai chi , but setting up communication apps including step by step You Tube videos and other resources As I continue to practice TC, I feel my balance, coordination, flexibility improve as well as strengthen my immune system. Despite my Active lifestyle with tai chi, I can keep calm and carry on.

I loved that this yoga practice doesn't take itself quite as serious ' as Indian style, where my type A personality strives to perfect a pose. This was the worst, most awkward "fitness/workout" experience of my life. First of all, it is not by any means Yoga. I don't consider myself a yoga nut...I've been to somewhere around 10 classes and I generally know some of the poses. I really enjoy yoga because it gives me a chance to clear my mind, stretch a lot, and work out any tense areas in my neck and back. I also do kickboxing and pilates. Anyway, the instructor (who looked like a mess by the way) definitely didn't have any official training in yoga. His instructions were sloppy and unorganized. Their version of a warmup is slapping various parts of the body (i'd assume to increase bloodflow...but it looks and feels ridiculous). Just imagine being told "raise your arms above your head. Slap your left armpit with your right hand. Now say, 'I love my armpits!'" Swear to god, that's how they do it there. At this point I was ready to leave but I wanted to see how crazy it could get. Next, the instructor had us doing awkward movements that don't in any way resemble yoga. Then everyone had to run around the room kind of free-dancing flailing arms around to songs like "It's Raining Men"...?????? Eventually this died down and the instructor brought out tea for the old korean women in the class. I'm not sure why it was just for them, but regardless the entire place is a scam. I left the place feeling very tense and upset. It did the opposite of what yoga is supposed to do. I felt bad for the older women all dressed in their lululemon attire looking for yoga and being subjected to this. If you want yoga, DEFINITELY make sure it's really yoga. I'm not sure what this place is trying to do but they should take "yoga" out of the name.

The Early Childhood program at the YMCA is one to definitely consider if you have a young child…read more Their 3-K and Pre-K classes help with fundamental learning and questioning of several subjects such as math, science, and reading. With top qualified teachers and aids, lead by the program's Director Lois Rothstein, rest assured that your child will have a rewarding experience at the Y. They create an environment that fosters a love of learning and friendship. Like everything, beginnings can be hard but with 3-K teachers such as Ms. Marieta and Ms. Ruby, children embrace starting school everyday and anticipate the next. Ms. Miri and Ms. Elizabeth reinforce children's curiosity of learning and play in Pre-K through deeper exploration of the various subjects. Adding interactive play elements to engage children's sense of independence, focus and accomplishment. The Early Childhood Program at the YMCA is a hidden treasure in our community. Join the many students and parents that hoped it could continue through 8th grade. I highly recommend this program to all parents with young children.

As a black person, I felt so uncomfortable at this gym that I only went once, ended my membership…read morethe same day and after speaking with the Membership Director, received a full refund for the month that I paid for. I recently moved to Queens and switched my YMCA from Prospect Park to Flushing. This Y is a major downgrade from the Prospect Park location in so many ways. most importantly the staff. I went to the small pool to do water aerobics. I have a mini tripod that attach to my phone and I watch a YouTube video of water aerobics and follow along. I have done this at at lease 3 different gyms, and SEVERAL times at the Prospect Park YMCA with absolutely no issues whatsoever. As soon as I walk in, although there are many swimmers in the pool, the white lifeguard immediately notices me. She is across the room and starts YELLING at me. "There's no phones allowed in the pool That's the Y's policy!" I say "what policy? I didn't have any issues with the Prospect Park Y." She then yells back, "Well this ain't Prospect Park." Then I ask her what the issue is and she ANGRILY yells, "We're not going to be responsible if you mess up your phone." I reply that I wasn't expecting them to be responsible if I damage my phone and that I'll pit it further away from the water. She waves me off. Then she yells to one of the swimmers that inquired about what was going on "Phones aren't allowed! She's on her phone!' I yell, "Well get the manager if it's a problem." She taps the walkie talkie on her hip and cockily replies "Oh, he's coming!" The manager comes in and says "We can't have phones in the pool, it's against our policy." Then escorts me out of the pool. I was humiliated!!! After I got dressed, I asked him to show me where this policy is written. He could not. All he could say was "It's against our policy to have phones in the pool area and the locker rooms" and gave me his manager's card to contact. After contacting his manager, she explained that their policy is that phones aren't allowed in the locker room nor the pool to protect the member's privacy. In my opinion, this could've been handled MUCH better and it would've been if she didn't immediately see me as a Nefarious Negro up to no good. All the life guard needed to do was ask me what I was doing with the phone. Instead she immediately started yelling and got aggressively defensive. Should I have matched her energy, I would've been labeled the angry black woman, the aggressor and I would've probably been banned from the Y. This was an egregious micro aggression that left me extremely embarrassed and made me feel unsafe. I was escorted out like I was some shady black criminal that should've never had access to that space in the first place. To add to this, the gym is filthy. The pool area had crud on it, the locker rooms were also disgusting. It's also very old with the exception of the cardio room that was recently renovated. Parking is also horrible. If you are black, I would avoid this YMCA at all costs. Not only does the staff not know how to communicate policies properly, and it's clear that they themselves are unclear about the policy, but they come off as RACISTS. This location also has very few black members which could be why the lifeguard was so startled that a Negro was in the midst.

A Hidden Gem for Mind-Body Healing…read more I found Body & Brain while searching for a place to help with my back and neck pain--and it's been such a positive experience. The instructors are warm, knowledgeable, and offer a unique mix of yoga and qigong that helps me release tension and feel more balanced. The studio is clean, spacious, and welcoming, with a cheerful energy that makes every class enjoyable. Even though my pain isn't fully gone yet, I feel a noticeable difference in how my body and mind feel overall. They also offer monthly special classes, which keep things fresh and engaging. Whether you're dealing with physical discomfort or just want to feel more grounded, I highly recommend giving this place a try!

It's more geared towards stretching, breathing, and making your body more flexible and healthy. It teaches you to be "mindful" and destress. It's an easygoing class where you can go at your own pace. You don't need a yoga mat for the exercises here, although you are free to bring and use one. The place is clean, well kept and calming to be in. They also offer online classes, but I have not taken those since I'd be watching from the couch eating popcorn instead of actually practicing. The attendees usually range from 30s-70s, I'd say most of them leaning towards the elderly side and female. There are a few guys in each class. Class size ranges from around 8-20 people, depending on the class and time, usually on the lower end. I feel better physically and mentally after each class, and I feel the improvement. The teachers are all competent and have a very positive, welcoming attitude. The classes are not cheap, but it's worth it for the health benefit (and they're also not prohibitively expensive). If you attend the classes, it's a reasonable rate. I would recommend trying their friends and family classes where it's free, they have those a few times a year. Then they offer different rates for 10 classes (you have 3 months to use them), 1 month, 3 months or 1 year. I always walked by this place and never went in. Wish I had joined years earlier. Overall I'd say it's been a very good experience.
