Growing up in Killeen, Taiwan Dragon was a staple for us for 40+ years, and it still hits the spot. It's a local institution. While the legendary owner, Jackson, has since passed the torch, his equally lively niece now runs the place and brings the same welcoming energy. Of course, we had to order our go-to: the rainbow rice. Massive portion (as always) and just as tasty as we remembered. The only disappointment? My fortune cookie was fortune-less. I don't wanna write bad reviews but I'll give my honest opinion. I'm also biased because we just moved into Killeen from California, so I think we been a Little spoiled with Chinese food from there. We are use to the competition of Chinese restaurants because there was always one where lived at. Even neighboring businesses are next to each other. They compete to be the best. Taiwan Dragon......I get it. Photos all over the walls. It's a favorite among the locals here. We ordered the Rainbow Rice, crispy Duck and the beef broccoli. I was ok with the food. I'm use to Cantonese style cooking so this was a bit different for me. Rainbow rice is basically a mix of proteins which I was ok with. Tasted fine to me. Crispy Duck was a little different. This was ok too. Even the beef broccoli was also ok. I was ok with it all. My parents on the other hand are not use to this. They didn't like the old smells of the building and the plastic serving dishes. Like I said, I think we been pretty spoiled when it comes to Chinese food. Years ago this restaurant used to serve very good Chinese food. Today I made a door dash order. Orange chicken had no orange flavor at all, plus the chicken itself was hard and dry. Hot and sour soup was bland, not hot or sour. Also ordered 3 vegetable egg rolls. They didn't taste bad, but they were the size and thickness of half a pinky finger. I have been coming to this awesome place for years. The food is always fresh and plentiful. I usually go with a good friend and we order pretty much the same things but they are excellent. The wonton soup is superior, clear, tasty with big wontons. And always, the ever present crispies. We usually get lunch specials with the additional soup, she loves cashew chicken on the combination plate, and I like the pungent chicken. It's a little like sweet n sour chicken, but with a bigger kick. Yummers. The crab rangoon is great as an appetizer. The menu is extensive and reminds me of the old-style Chinese restaurants like Formosa, I grew up with in Florida. The pictures that line the walls all are guests taken with the owner, he used to come around and talk to the patrons and use a laser beam to point out this or that luminary. He will be missed. I had been here one other time, and the entrée that I ordered I was not thrilled with, so the chef had actually offered to meet me anything I wanted to replace it. I came away from that having had quite a positive experience, so a few years later, I decided to bring the hubby here. Not all that great this time. He had the General Tso's chicken, which he tends to enjoy, and he did this time, but I didn't really like the flavor of it. It was wonderfully crispy, however. I have the jalapeño chicken - - quite spicy, and it was OK, but it wasn't the best I've had. And their lo mein is mostly pasta -- although it's a very good pasta. Lucy was a wonderful server. The food tasted horrible the duck I don't even think that was duck I've had sick plenty of time and it was dry and chewy my lomein looked good but taste very old with no flavor like it had been sitting the wontons were old as well! Noting was fresh or even semi fresh! I want to say that maybe the food was bad because it was late ordered food about 7pm the close at 9pm but still that shouldn't be the case. Growing up as a child me and my family would always dine in at our favorite oriental restaurant. It was called the pecking restaurant in San Diego. It's closed down now, but my favorite thing I ordered there as a kid was the wonton soup and the fried wontons. Here in this restaurant, there fried wontons definitely reminded me of the same ones I used to eat as a kid. It definitely hit the home run on this. It's sad that Panda Express is the best chinese takeout in the Killeen area. Taiwan Dragon leaves a lot to be desired and disappoints by cutting corners on every part of the meal because they're too cheap to arrive at delivering an acceptable dish but charge a premium price to said customer. For instance: The fried rice is just covered with soy sauce and no flavor. Compared to Panda Express meets expectations by delivering with wok fried egg, peas, carrots, seasoning, and grilled onions. Why is a fast food chain even being compared??? Let's continue: They're crab rangoons is mainly fried, "enriched" all purpose flour with very little crab/cream cheese filling served with anti-freeze, neon red, sweet and sour sauce. Another disappointment by Taiwan Dragon along with the entrees; at this point, it's not even worth the trouble of describing how bad the entrees are and would require more effort than what Taiwan Dragon puts into their lame, flavorless entrees. Spend your hard earned money else where with other restaurants that can deliver the dish you deserve and that you desire. The best crab rangoons in Killeen area are served at the local Thai restaurants: served: crab/cream cheese filling spiced / mixed with yellow curry paste wrapped and fried to perfection! The owners of Taiwan Dragon need to take advantage of the time the business is closed on the weekend and take much needed discovery to inspire their dishes from much better Asian restaurants that Central Texas has to offer (more in Austin, TX) such as Din Ho Chinese BBQ, Twin Lion Chinese Restaurant, Tso Chinese Takeout & Delivery, Wu Chow, Xing Long Chinese Cuisine and much more; All of these places make Taiwan Dragon look like a bad joke. I ordered the Combination Plate which came with your choice of Soup, an Egg Roll, a Fried Wonton, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Fried Rice and your choice from several other entrees. I had Lomein in place of the Fried Rice, Egg Drop Soup and chose Beef Peppers & Onions. The servings were plentiful and I ended up taking most of it in a to go box. Food does taste old and the texture seems old. Servers rush you, not too friendly. Too dark inside.

I feel like they cooked my food too long. The sesame chicken would not go away in my mouth. I'm also use to having veggies in my fries rice but it was just rice. The eggroll was a little burnt. I am so surprised to see such high reviews for this place. They do not cook the food to order. This is a place where they cook food previously and then heat it up when someone orders it. My food did not taste fresh at all. Very disappointed in it. My food was literally ready 5 minutes or less after I ordered it. And it didn't taste good at all. I am totally fine waiting 20 mins or more for something quality. Quality over quantity. What blows my mind is the whole restaurant was FULL of people. The food was not good. And there was a weird smell in the restaurant that was making my allergies go wild. The only thing I can think of is the food is very cheap. Food is good and I've gone here since old owners were still there. But the customer service on the phone sucks. I called to tell them a order was wrong and instead of saying they apologize she started accusing me of telling her wrong and how she remembered my order. That she wouldn't have got it wrong. Bad customer service they lost a customer and I know they probably don't care but idc how good your food is if your rude in any way I won't go back.
