I was hoping for some traditional Taiwanese food while visiting Killeen for work. I was sadly Disappointed that this was not a traditional Taiwanese restaurant. The food was typical "Americanized Chinese food" that you can just about get anywhere throughout the US. I'm so looking forward to CNY in Taiwan in the new year. read more

Not sure what the hype is all about here. They have pictures of many high ranking officers on the walls here. Makes me wonder why they choose to always eat here when they come to town. I had the General Tso's. Not impressed, the sauce they cooked it in wasn't great and their fried rice wasn't great it was bland but the egg roll was decent. Wong's Palace even with their cockroaches in their food was better. The waitstaff was friendly, so there's that. read more

A Fort Hood/Killeen tradition - if associated with the U.S. Army in one way or another, a must visit. The food is Americanized Chinese, nothing to write home about - at least the waitress was honest, even she described the cuisine as Americanized Chinese! If rating was for the food, it would rank only two (as Candace S.'s review), but add one star because of the experience. You do not go to Taiwan Dragon for the cuisine, but rather for the experience. The proprietor of the restaurant is "Action Jackson," the price of the meal is the entertainment for the night! Since opening in 1991, Taiwan Dragon's walls display the "who's who" of Fort Hood and the United States Army. Pictures of all Fort Hood leadership, from their time as staff officers (captain/majors) to commanders of the 1st Cavalry Division to Chief of Staff of the Army are prominently displayed on the walls. Ask "Action Jackson" about anybody (General X) and he brings out his red laser pointer and quickly identifies General X's current picture (and rank), and quickly follows up with pictures of the General when he was previously stationed at Fort Hood as a Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, or even Major or Captain! He is also cognizant of officers' current and pending assignments. He is definitely part of Fort Hood/Killeen lore! Located in the industrial portion of Killeen, parking may be a bit difficult, but do not despair. Taiwan Dragon is a must visit for any military (or at least supporters of the US Army). Knocked off 2 stars because this particular dining experience was poor. Food was still consistent as the last time, but the service was horrible. The thin, short-haired Asian lady totally forgot to take our order after she served us our drinks. We waited and waited and waited... Noticed that she was serving other tables and casually chatting with other people in the front lobby. Uhh.. hello?! The dining area wasn't even crowded (only 4 tables were occupied). I guess it would've been a good time to be aggressive and speak up, but I have learned to never piss off the people that's bringing you your food - if you know what I mean. There was an elderly Asian man (I'm assuming he's the owner, but I don't come here enough to know) that stopped by our table and we told him about our waitress gone missing. He nodded his head and then walked off to the other table with a kid and handed her a beaded necklace. Still no waitress. By now, the people seated next to us eating, were occasionally staring at us. Without saying a word, we knew what they were thinking. Waited about 25 min total, and a male waiter walked by and asked if we've been served yet. Umm.. no? I mentioned to him that I believe the other waitress forgot about us. So, he took our order and promptly brought us our food. He must've told her about our complaint because she totally avoided eye-contact and kept walking by the opposite end of the room instead of on our side. Way to go, lady. read more

Far from excellent, not my favorite in town. Coin wall, and all the military photos were a great touch on the decor, yet it felt a bit too much. When we got home with the food, we discovered that one of the items is not what we ordered. Ordered shrimp and scallops and there was no shrimp but lots of beef instead and scallops were very tiny. What an experience. My nephew & I just enjoyed a fantastic Chinese dinner w Sichuan style, glass noodles, mixed seafood, steamed dumplings and wonton soup. It was so good, could stop until I was stuffed. Owner Jackson Huang greeted us and proudly took us thru the memorabilia, which is everywhere. I've grown up coming to Taiwan Dragon for birthdays and special occasions. I'm proud to say that my picture is on the wall! The owner (Jackson) is a kind soul. It is obvious that he knows his regulars. I always order the General Tso's Chicken. It is consistently spot on, delicious. The server knows my order by heart. My glass was never empty. I order the sesame chicken, fried rice with hot and sour soup. I went here bc it had high ratings but apparently people don't know what good Chinese food is. The food was not fresh at all. The chicken was tough and hard to eat. The soup was close to poison I'm surprised I survived the few bites I took. It all around was not good at all. Chinese is my favorite food and if this is what Killeen Chinese is I dont want it! Trust me and don't go or go and be disappointed and waste your money. I ordered the rainbow rice because of the hype and because my friend recommended it to me. I did not like it at all. Did not have any veggies or onion, just plain fried rice with a ton of different types of meat. It all tasted very bland with no flavor at all. I could not finish the food from how it just tasted like nothing. It grossed me out and it did not smell appetizing at all. The place is okay. I've had better Chinese food. I ordered sesame seed chicken, and it was subpar. The owner was friendly, and gave us a lot of military background, but it was a bit much, considering I live military everyday.. I just wanted to have a nice lunch. The egg roll had an old packaged freezer burnt taste to it. The waitresses were friendly and attentive. I don't however like the fact they only give sweet tea out to the "generals" in the military. Quite a few has raved to me about this place, Taiwan Dragon, and while I've been told this is "the best Chinese food," I think I'll have to try it one more time or maybe a few more times to really see. I went simple and ordered during lunch because that's when they have the rush hour specials (it's usually cheaper at lunch hours). Anyways, I went with my preferred choices, Beef Broccoli and their Rainbow Fried Rice (this item was always told to me as their best dish). Pause for a long stare, because I was thinking the Rainbow rice was going to be colorful and bright. Forgive me for thinking that because it was not, It was good though, it just didn't look like what I had intentionally expected. This place has been around for awhile and you can instantly tell once you walk through the second doors as the walls filled to the brim with photos of many companies and organizations and groups signed and dated and I find that very warm. It tells me that this place is like a home away from home type of vibe. I liked that very much. I would definitely recommend this place and I plan to eat here again. Also, when I ordered I called in and it was ready within 15 minutes I believe. Be careful of parking though, I chose to park right in front of their doors and there's an unusually large dip from the street road to their parking spots. I have a small car so I had to angle my car so that it wouldn't scrape the bottom of my car. Other than that, enjoy your meal here. I'll update when I've tried this place again. read more

This is my first time here and an in the prowl for a Asian food place like they have in Houston. Well, this isn't it. Not a fan of the flavor of the brown sauce. So today I tried Taiwan dragon for the first time with my friend who's been there many times before. I ended up ordering this noodle based plate called mei fund and a couple appetizers and everything tasted fine. But in the middle of my entrée I ended up taking a bite of part of a bug!! I found the other half of the bug in my food and I notified my waitress and their owner. They ended up apologizing to me saying they didn't understand how that bug could've gotten in their food but it seemed cooked to me. I ended up having to pay for the rest of my meal but my entree was free. The person I went with also had to pay for their whole meal. The fried rice is terrible. Taste like rice with soy sauce. No eggs no veggies in it. It wasn't even fried it was boil in a bag rice. The entrees where drowned in sauce everything was seemed like frozen bagged chicken. Ever since I enlisted and wherever the Army has taken me I have found far in between any consistent good 'ole Chinese food anywhere but Taiwan Dragon answered my request. After coming here two times, it showed how consistent they are with the quality of food and also the service they provide for they're customers. This establishment reminds me of the hometown Chinese restaurant we have back home in California. It is a understatement to say this is a Fort Hood staple in dining. Upon entering you see literally wall of photos of the owner with full birds, generals, SGMs..even former chief of staff. It is located downtown Killeen, by Rancier Ave but do not let it deter you, it is a diamond in a rough town. First time there I had they're lunch special they serve 1100am-230pm. General Tso chicken that's served with chow mein and sweet and sour chicken, an egg roll, a fried won ton and got a bowl of egg drop soup with a side of steamed dumplings too. Haven't even had egg drop soup before my wife assured me it was delicious. They received her confirmation, it truly was and they served fried wonton strips on the side with the soup. Onto the main entrée, the General Tso chicken was a generous portion spicy but enough to enjoy. Sweet and sour chicken was just fried enough and went well with the sauce. Steamed dumplings were good size and came with a teriyaki sauce that you can dip, was hard not to eat all of them by myself lol! The chow mein was ok, im more of a low mein guy, prefer flat noodles but matter of opinion. The egg roll was crispy and chewy but not overly chewy. The fried wonton was a light crispy texture wasn't flattering. First time around made me a believer after the second was just icing on the cake. Went for lunch with my wife, was bit busy but wasn't crowded. We shared an entrée plate this time and glad we did, portions were very generous when our food arrived the waiter was nice enough to bring a plate each to us and a serving spoon to use on our plates, similar back home where they had dishes with serving spoons and forks to accommodate customers. They even put another mound of steamed white rice on the plate for us, didn't even have to but were awesome about it. Another example of how restaurants in Killeen don't need to offer high-quality, good-tasting food in order to get rave reviews, so long as they give you enough food to fill up a trough. It's really amazing how many people just praised this Chinese restaurant. This place may be better than all the area's god awful "Chinese" buffets, but it still falls way short. The shrimp lo-mein noodles are extremely thick and way too mushy with no flavor. The fried rice doesn't taste like or look like the fried rice I'm used to. (The kind having onions and other veggies with a nice seared flavor.) The restaurant is pretty clean and seems to be popular among the Fort Hood military community. However, the food is missing something. I'm not saying they don't use the typical Chinese spices and flavors, just that the food tastes a bit bland. And about the famous rainbow rice everyone just raves about.....My son ordered it at my suggestion after hearing how great it was. When the dish arrived to the table, I could tell by the look on his face that we were both thinking the same thing...It looked awful. A huge plate of strange looking fried rice with every type of meat you can imagine on top. It looked (and smelled) like garbage. I mean I just don't understand how people can eat that. Needless to say, we both grew up with access to a Chinatown so we know good food and during this event, the food was definitely not up to our standards. In fact, my friend actually stated this was the worst Chinese food she's ever had. I find that many of the Chinese restaurants around Fort Hood/Killeen/Copperas Cove are very Americanized. Some people like that and dont mind, others prefer something a little more authentic. Do yourself a favor and make the drive to Austin--they have places that serve dim sum and Chinese BBQ--delish! I found this to be very surprising based on all the great reviews. We ordered Chicken and Broccoli, two orders of General Tso's, a small Wonton Soup and two egg rolls. The chicken had a weird taste to it. As if the chicken had been washed in some sort of chemical. I was very disappointed. I've eaten here 3 different times. Every time is worse than the last. The food is disgusting. It literally looks and smells like cat food. I had the General Tso'a Chicken with white rice, and it came out tasting like spicy ketchup from whataburger was the sauce. The steamed dumplings were literally awful, my friend tried one and spit it out. The crab rangoons had barely any filling, and even if they did the filling was slimey and inedible, also the oil they use in the fryer must be very old because the taste of the shell alone was enough to make me gag. The water they serve is what I can only imagine toilet water tastes like, and they use the same water for their soda machine, so getting soda won't even help you. All around awful experience. Food was disappointing, service was severely lacking. This used to be a great place. The server did not bring the soup when the other appetizers arrived, and didn't bother to tell me that it would take a little longer because they had to make more wonton. It was served with the entree, and when I asked that she keep the soup, as there was no need for it at that point, she huffed off, taking our tableware with her. We retrieved table ware from an empty table nearby. The server did not return to check on us, but did drop the check off. Always check that ticket! The drink charges were as though all had soft drinks, even though only one person actually had a beverage. I guess if you have an official function and must go here, you can deal! I wold not deliberately subject myself to another visit.
