This place, at some point in time, was a stellar spot to get professional massages. The first owner actually had people who knew what they were doing. My visits during this time always left me leaving with wobbly legs because the masseuse had hit all the right knots. Then that owner sold it, maybe around 2020, to non-Taiwanese people. Suddenly, it was the sort of staff you'd find on every street in Chinatown, NY. I asked for the same treatment as I did the first couple of times. Not only did she skip the hot stones and stepping, it felt like I never got a massage just hours later. Needless to say, I never went back. I know another reviewer mentioned how the staff is filled with people that travel in and live together while they are here. That is correct. These are the kind of Chinese people that take one lesson, if any, and say they are qualified to perform the job. Don't get me wrong, some are truly skilled in their chosen profession. This lady I had simply was not that. Aside from that, the staff was very kind towards me. If you are lucky enough to find a masseuse that can take care of your problems here, then call it a blessing. Their price range is actually decent. They were all nice, but my massage was extremely painful and rough, which made it stressful. The opposite reason I went there, to relax. I asked several times for the woman to lighten the pressure, and she acknowledged it, but nothing changed. I went there because I heard good reviews about the place, which is fine for other people, maybe other people like their massages extremely rough and fast lol. The lady's face turned to SHOCK and she started yelling in another language. HORRIBLE! I made an appointment online for deep tissue shoulder/neck massage for noon. I received an online confirmation. three days later (the day before my appointment) I received a reminder. Both had the name Taiwan Spa, the address 11567 W. Broad St. But when I arrived - the three people who were standing around doing NOTHING, claimed I was a walk in (huh?), and when I showed them the confirming emails - they did not understand what an email was. They pointed at the name "Taiwan Spa" and the address '11567 W. Broad St." as listed in the confirmation and reminder and then pulled out a business card (WHICH HAD THE SAME EXACT INFORMATION) and said "no same". Obviously they did not understand any English (written or spoken) and did not comprehend that the business card information was EXACTLY the same as the information on the confirmation and reminder email. In fact, they did not seem to understand what email was. The person who seemed to be the "receptionist" kept saying "walk in? whole body? 60 minutes"" and I kept saying "appointment, deep tissues, shoulder/neck, 30 minutes". The so called "receptionist" said "no understand. owner did?" And the two therapists who were standing there were speaking mandarin among themselves and the receptionist acting like I was from another planet. I finally walked out as obliviously I was NOT going to get the deep tissue shoulder massage I needed and no one could understand what I was even there for. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. THIS IS A SCAM SHOP. MY NEIGHBOR LATER TOLD ME THAT THE SO CALLED THERAPISTS ARE RECRUITED BY THE OWNER FROM ABROAD AND HE GIVES THEM FREE HOUSING IN RETURN FOR BEING IN THE SHOP AND A SMALL STIPEND FOR FOOD. I did not know what to expect but I will definitely return for another reflexology service. My reflexology appointment began with a brief feet soaking/bath in a dimly lit room with the sounds of soothing music playing in the background. Next, was a massage with every single pressure point activated in my feet! Oh boy did I feel this! For me, it was a hurt-feel-good feeling. I was looking for a relaxing massage after an 8.5 hour exam. I got reflexology for 60mins. It was INTENSE! Very painful for me. I emphatically requested for him to not do such strong pressure. He did change the pressure after that. I'm a small built woman and really don't need that much pressure. However! I have to give this experience five stars because, I've spent thousands of dollars on acupuncture and Chinese herbs and a lot of other treatments for insomnia, and after this painful massage, I slept like a log. No waking up during the night. Who knew reflexology was so powerful?!?! The massage therapist, the owner, is clearly very skilled. Unfortunately, the intensity of the massage is too much for me. I got a back spasm the next day that was painful, and I've never had any back problems. I actually don't not have any physical limitations at all, which is probably why I only got a back spasm and nothing else. The techniques are too strong for my body, but they are effective for insomnia. It would be essential to review any physical limitations before the session (this is not asked) and make it very clear with the massage therapist that you may not need as much pressure as most of his clients, and to request some flexibility regarding this. You would have to clearly state to him that the pressure is too much, as your wincing in pain may not be sufficient. Back spasms are not fun. read more
