Our New Favorite Indian Spot, Right Here in Vallejo My wife and I went out for a date night, hoping to find a new Indian restaurant closer to home. We already had a favorite in Fairfield, so our expectations were high -- we just wanted to see if Vallejo had something that came close. Long story short: we found our new favorite Indian food spot, and it's just minutes from our house. The food was amazing from start to finish. Our server, Naavi, was kind and made us feel genuinely welcomed. We started with samosas, then had chicken tikka masala and chicken biryani with garlic naan. They cook everything in a clay oven, and you can really taste the difference in each dish. A big plus for my family: everything here is halal. If you have family members who can only eat halal foods, this place makes planning lunch or dinner so much easier. 5 out of 5 stars! I came in here for a late lunch after dropping my car off at the nearby dealership so I got white glove dedicated service from the wait staff. My water cup was never close to empty! I used to live in Union City and we'd go to a great Indian spot in Fremont, so when we moved to Vallejo I was a little worried we wouldn't be around really good ethnic food anymore... but then we discovered Taj Grill and were completely blown away. I ordered To-Go the following dishes listed below at the restaurant, and was told 30 minutes and it was ready in 35 min, so not too bad. Dish: Rogan Josh Cost: ($19) Taste rating: 8.0/10.0 Dish: Butter Chicken Cost: ($18) Taste rating: 8.0/10.0 Dish: Butter Naan Cost:($5) Taste rating: 6.0/10.0 PROS: Overall the dishes were very good and above average. The meats were tender, savory and the spices were well balanced and top notch. I know Indian food. Been eating it for decades and visited Indian a few times. CONS: Although the food was very good, the value proposition were poor because the serving sizes were very small compared to the prices they charge. The take-out sizes were only 12 ounces and the Rogan Josh only had 4 small pieces of 1"x1" , lamb meat and all sauce. The Butter Chicken only slightly better with 5 small pieces of chicken. the Butter Naan was also very thin and almost dry. Good thing they where generous with the butter, otherwise it would have been dry. Overall I will not be going there n the future. Too expensive for my pocket. There are other Indian restaurants I can go in the East/South Bay, and the Peninsula that are better value and equally tasty. read more

I ate the Goat meal. Which was Delicious! The goat did have a few bones in it, which I kind of don't like, since you have to spit out bones and/or remove them with your fingers. I love the sauce, if I could order a bucket of it I would. The sauce is so creamy and perfectly seasoned. We tried the coconut shrimp curry as well and that was amazing! The shrimp was juicy and a great size for an appetizer. The coconut sauce was delicious. The grill platter, is so good as well. A mix of both chicken and lamb kebab. With a mix of veggies. My husband loves to make a wrap with his naan. The goat naan is amazing! I love dipping it in the tikka masala sauce. The mozerella naan is great as well. This is an excellent Indian restaurant! This was our first time here, but it certainly will not be our last. We popped in for dinner for two on a quiet Sunday evening. The restaurant is located in the strip mall and the decor and surroundings were a cut above what I was expecting. (but sadly I wasn't expecting much). Nevertheless I was pleasantly surprised. I'm sensitive to yellow light and the bulbs in the restaurant seemed to be warm yellow. It made the place seem yellowish orange. But this is probably just me. The four page menu was a bit of a surprise. I would have thought that such a menu would be better suited for a larger restaurant with more clientele. I ordered the Punjabi lemon chicken and my friend ordered the tandoori, mixed chicken and lamb. We also had the raita the mango chutney, and the mint chutney. Both the tandoori, and the lemon chicken were delicious. We both agreed the spicing tasted a bit odd but remained agreeable. It was actually faintly bitter to my tongue but provided a pleasant contrast to the sweet chutney. We'd ordered medium spicy. The heat started off medium but quickly built up as you ate. It really made you reach for the raita. It's a bit hotter than most Indian restaurants around the Bay Area. Indian food has a tendency to numb your taste buds but the chutneys and the raita did a nice job refreshing the palate. The portions were large. I was pretty much done at about halfway and I hadn't even touched the rice. Service was wonderful. It was detailed and meticulous. Our server made sure we were comfortable, discovered we were first timers to the restaurant, gave us a bit of an introduction to the food and the menu. He left nothing to chance making sure, our drinks were correct and taking our orders for entrees ASAP. Here's where it gets personal. How does this place stack up against other Indian restaurants? Sadly the point is moot because my fav Indian restaurants are in Singapore. I'm not going to be hopping a jet to lunch in Asia anytime soon. But this restaurant does make it into my top 25 Indian restaurants. Globally. What does this mean? Is that good or bad. It's great! When you think of the dozens of excellent Indian eateries I've been in, Taj Grill is doing just fine. Which makes Taj Grill a perfectly nice neighborhood restaurant. I would eat here again. But maybe I can talk to them about some cardamom..... The only thing I had to do to make this diabetic friendly was to skip the naan and the rice. read more

The mango lassi was also great and not too tart. We ordered the food for pick up so didn't get the chance to sit down and eat. Though the inside of this restaurant is quite ornate. I'm usually eating either goat curry or the chicken korma gotta say it's up there in one best I've tried , especially that goat curry. Nagi what is the one who inspired me to write the review today.
