My sister and I met a friend here for lunch. This restaurant is close to the train station (5 min drive) so it was perfect for us. It is up a flight of stairs and I am not sure if there is a more accessible alternative, but luckily stairs worked just fine for us! There are lots of booths and tables to choose from, as well as a bar to the left when you enter. The menu has a lot of vegan and vegetarian options, which was nice to see, as our friend is a vegetarian. We each selected what we were going to eat. My sister ended up choosing the chicken korma, and I ordered the butter chicken. We also got garlic naan for the table. Everything was absolutely delicious! So, so flavorful. It came out not long after ordering. The waitstaff were extremely attentive and friendly, as well, and often refilled our waters and asked if we needed anything. I've been visiting Stamford for 2 years now, since my sister moved here and I'm SO MAD that she hasn't brought me here till this last Thanksgiving. This restaurant is definition of warmth. They created a cozy homely atmosphere for the holidays, even had someone apply mehendi for us. Now for the food, spectacular is an understatement. From the calamari, to the flaming grill chicken. With the risk of stating the obvious, there's plenty of Indian restaurants in the Tri-State area ranging from food stalls to haute cuisine and from Southern Indian to Northern Indian and everything in-between. Taj however has somehow managed (for 10+ years now) to keep a high-end atmosphere, homemade and authentic taste and above all service that rivals the most expensive restaurants in NYC. The food is always perfectly spiced and cooked with the highest quality ingredients. They have northern Indian and southern Indian staples and not only do they clearly mark the vegan items (vs. vegetarian) on their menu, their entire staff is properly trained on understanding all different food preferences and allergies. We were sat without reservations, and quickly greeted with water, and menus. We started with flaky and savory samosa and light, fluffy garlic Naan. The papadum and ubiquitous condiments was kept full, which was appreciated while waiting for our entrees. I had the lamb chettinad, and really enjoyed it. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the sauce was really well seasoned, and not shy on the "Scovilles". Goat curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, and a chicken tikka sag rounded out our choices, and no one was disappointed. The ample portion of Basmati was appreciated. Very conveniently located from I95, we were driving back to NJ and craved some indian food and thought to give this place a try.. and glad that we did. I ordered fish fry and matar paneer which they made spicy on request. Their tandoori roti was also really fresh and good. Also ordered a garden salad, and it was really good too.. my experience has been subpar with salads in indian restaurants, it's generally not that fresh or the greens are wilted here that was not the case. Everything seemed super fresh freshly cut up and the salad was fine. Matar paneer was delicious too. Best part was that food wasn't oily, but the flavors were right on point. They know their spice game. Another thing worth mentioning is their quantity. It was by far the best quantity I have seen compared to other Indian restaurants in New York in New Jersey region. Servers greeted us with smile every time. They also offered us a complimentary gulab jamun. even the Papad that is served in the beginning was really good. We were told later that biryani is their speciality which the chef makes in a bamboo so we will definitely be visiting sometime later to experience that all in all great experience. Until today I had never heard of this place and what reeled me in was that I could smell the food from around the corner in the parking lot and was whiffed away. I had very high expectations going into this place and the staff were very friendly, however my order took 42 minutes to make and receive and at the time the restaurant only had 3 people dining in. I was very annoyed that I was told it would be 15-20 minutes, and then I come back and they said "another 5 minutes". Which then lead to an entire 42 minute wait. We knew it was going to be good when the lentil crackers and dips like mango chutney and tamarind sauce were plopped down and were incredible. We had veggie samosas and lasooni Gobi to start. Very good. Then we had the butter paneer (my favorite), chicken tikka masala (excellent), rack of lamb chettinad (very unique and actually had a kick which I like), and shrimp saag (very good). A wonderful find in Stamford! My college freshman daughter was craving vegetarian Indian food and we went here based on yelp reviews, but it wasn't clear to me if a buffet was offered on Saturday. We were looking for a buffet because we like to try many different things. They did not have a buffet when we visited but instead had something that to me was more special - Thali lunch specials where you choose an entree (from a long list of vegetarian and meat options) and got a small portion of many different things: dosa, sambar (perhaps?), chickpeas, cucumber salad and pickles, curried mushrooms, rice,a vegetable samosa, yogurt sauce, and a pile of the best naan! Everything we had was delicious- we went all vegetable with palak paneer, aloo gobi, and vegetable korma. Each were as good and as fresh as I've ever had, but even better with nice little touches like the crisp fresh ginger added to the top of the palak paneer. I have previously reviewed other Indian restaurants here, as well as Italian and Lebanese restaurants. Taj is yet another great Indian restaurant in Stamford. The service was professional and attentive. The ambiance had a nice modern feel to it. The restaurant is only on the second floor. I am intrigued by the Middle Eastern lunch place on the first floor, which I may check out at some point. It appears to be part of the same business. We ordered vegetable curry, chicken tikka masala, lamb korma, and buttered naan. It was all delicious. There was not a single bad dish. For dessert, we were given free sweet balls- gulab jamun, as they are called. The only problem is the parking- it was very difficult to find a space in downtown Stamford on a Friday night. read more

We couldn't eat them on time so they got cold. The chutneys were good too along side. The Gulab jamun and rasmalai was very nice. We enjoyed the naan's as well, got onion chili, garlic and regular.
