Halal meat cooking on a spit
    Matthew L.

Layla's Falafel is a small chain of Middle Eastern restaurants that opened in Fairfield, Connecticut in 2000. It was founded by husband and wife Imad "Dino" and Layla Sakakini. Dino is a Palestinian immigrant who was born and raised in Jerusalem, while Layla is originally from Lebanon. In the late 1990s, Dino and Layla owned a national sandwich franchise shop in Bridgeport. After learning that Layla was a Lebanese immigrant, a customer asked her if she could make him some tabbouleh. She gladly agreed and this became a regular occurrence. Pretty soon, Layla added falafel and other Middle Eastern specialties to the menu. Falafel sandwiches went from being a Friday special to an everyday menu item. When the line for falafel began to stretch around the block, Dino and Layla knew it was time to bring authentic Middle Eastern food to Fairfield County. In 2000, Layla's Falafel was born. A second location opened in Stamford in 2004 and a third opened in Westport in October 2017. Over the years, the small chain has won numerous accolades for their delicious food. My family and I visited Layla's Stamford location this past summer while we were passing through the city. We have actually ordered takeout from them a number of times and had never been disappointed. This was our first time eating in. The place was filled with the delicious aroma of halal meat cooking on a spit. I ordered the "Jerusalem Falafel" (traditional falafel sandwich, served with fresh cut fries) on a toasted wrap, while my wife ordered the "Chicken Kabob Skewer". The falafel was PERFECT! Every dish we've ever tried at Layla's always has the most perfect blend of spices, the vegetables always taste so fresh, and their various sauces and spreads can't be beat. For an authentic Middle Eastern experience, look no further than Layla's!

A busy Falafel place with very good food and service. People were mostly there for take out but me and my husband decided to dine in and eat the food while it was hot. Their lentil soup was very comforting and homely. The wraps and the hummus were also very delicious. A definite go to for a quick bite.

SO SO GOOD! You essentially can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I was feeling the goodies in the deli case so I essentially made a meal of all the vegetarian items there, with a side of mujadara. My fam got a chicken platter with baba ganoush and pita. EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD! The service is great, no frills and relaxed vibe inside, great prices and tons of options for any diet. Highly recommend and wish there were more places like this everywhere!

Friendly and efficient person manning the cash register, got us menus, and after we ordered and sat down, plates and cutlery. Nice vibes, limited seating, clean bathroom. Now for the food: the seasoned fries are out this world, top-tier and a must get! I ordered the lamb platter, the lamb was really good and the hummus was decent, a drop too lemony for my taste. The portions are insane here, come hungry. The lentil soup was good, not something I would go out of my way for, then again, not a big lentil soup fan but I did try a bit of my friend's, as the cashier thoughtfully brought us two spoons.

It is intentional. The food, the market, the people, the energy of the place all make it worth the trip every single time. The flavors here are deeply rooted in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and you can taste that authenticity in every bite. The hummus is silky and perfectly balanced with tahini and lemon. The baba ganoush carries real smoky depth. The chicken kebabs are juicy and seasoned all the way through. The shawarma is warm, aromatic, and layered with spice. The falafel is crisp outside, vibrant and herbaceous inside. My personal favorite is the Iraqi Chicken Sandwich. It is absolutely phenomenal. The chicken is tender, boldly seasoned, and packed with flavor. Every bite is balanced and satisfying. It is the kind of sandwich that stays on your mind long after you leave. Everything is halal and incredibly fresh. The place is always busy, which tells you everything. The food turns over quickly. The products in the market turn over quickly. There are always people picking up takeout and others shopping the shelves. And the market itself is a treasure. Authentic meats, cheeses, sausages, dairy products, dry goods, teas, dried beans, spices, specialty ingredients and more, all reflecting the flavors of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. These are items you simply will not find in conventional grocery stores. If you love to cook, you will walk out inspired. If you have never been before, do not be intimidated. Walk in. The staff are incredibly welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. There is space to sit and enjoy your meal, and they do a huge takeout business as well. Dunya is easily one of the best places in Waterbury and the surrounding areas. Authentic flavor. Unique products. Warm hospitality. I highly recommend it.

Place your order at the counter, then have a seat at one of the handful of tables in the dining area adjacent to the open kitchen while your food is prepared to order. The menu is very simple with your choice of freshly made-to-order falafel, hummus, or roasted vegetables (as well as various iterations of those three options) served either as a sandwich in a pita or as a platter. On our recent visit for a late lunch, I opted for the falafel pita sandwich ($12), a generous portion of freshly made falafel served with tahini, and cucumber, tomato, cabbage, and onion with sumac, which was excellent! My dining companion went with the hummus pita sandwich ($11), a generous serving of freshly made hummus as well as cucumber, tomato, cabbage, and onion with sumac, which she really enjoyed a lot. Bonus points for the hot sauce (with freshly-made mild, medium, and hot selections) and pickle bar available to patrons no matter whether they grab one of the handful of small tables to enjoy their meal in-house or take their orders to enjoy elsewhere. Portions are generous and the freshness of the ingredients was obvious. Both of us really enjoyed our meals and we'll definitely be back next time we're in the area. PRO TIP #1: Aba's doesn't have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street parking on East Market Street. If you can't find a spot on the street, the Rhinebeck Municipal Parking lot (@ 61 East Market Street) is just across the street from Aba's.
