I've had Indian in the majority of states in the US and multiple places in the UK. I was not expecting it to rate anywhere near the top 25, let alone top 10. Instead, this is tied for the best Indian I've ever had anywhere, anytime. It was that good. Veggie samosas were perfectly crisp on the outside and not overdone on the inside. The garlic naan was so flavorful and complex yet blended so well with dishes like Gobi Aloo and Palak Panner, and Handi Goat, everyone at our table was blown away. Great value, authentic Bollywood videos playing on the tv's, and simple aesthetics which are an indicator the prices are great and not over-hyped ... this hits all the marks. This is my favorite indian restaurant in Macon. I must agree with James S. though the goat curry has a lot of bones in it which is why I get the lamb. OMG yums and the samosa chaat is awesome also. It's very reasonably priced. I totally love spicy food so I order mine spicy and it's hot. Nose running type of hot. May want to get mild if you don't like a lot of heat. Recently moved to Macon from NY and was craving some good Indian food. I took to Yelp and found Taj. Goat curry was just okay. but the Naan was one of the best that I've ever had! This restaurant was an outstanding find!!! We were on our way to Florida from Chicago and I had a taste for Indian food. Sometimes ethnic places in small towns are hit or miss. I'm happy to report this place was a hit! Everything was flavorful & fresh! I had an eggplant dish over rice, sooo good, and I had some samosas. It's a family place run by two brothers & their uncle is the chef. One of the brothers was my server, he explained what I could eat as a vegan, LOTSA choices, and I know I chose wisely! There were many carnivores enjoying meat dishes! The place is a little hard to find, next to the Dollar Store, in the Walmart mall. Worst food!! Just about everything was bad - from soup to tea. Lassi was just sugar water. Naan was soaked in oil. The meat balls in Malai kofta were just potato balls and the gravy had no traces of flavor. And the chutneys looked to be few days old. The service was okay. The veggie korma was obviously made with California style frozen veggies (you know--the ones with crinkle-cut zucchini and carrots; who puts zucchini in korma??) and the chana masala was not as flavorful as usual. We have been here several times before for dinner. Their garlic naan bread and butter chicken is amazing. They also have this skillet thing that has different kinds of spiced chicken and sausage that's delicious. Today we decided to try their lunch buffet. My husband and I both ate for $19 which was a really good price for all the food we got to try. Once again it was very good and did not disappoint. And whatever you do, don't say "I don't like curry, so I wouldn't like Indian". Give it a try at lunch and hit the buffet. That way you can test out all sorts of dishes. My favorite dish is Mutter Paneer. You have to get naan. And you sinply must eat with your hands, okay, not really, but it makes for a really fun dining experience, and you spend the next day with awesome-smelling fingers. I decided to try Taj for lunch because I've never had Indian food before. When I arrived there was only one man working. There was a family of four in front of me and they were seated with a friendly greeting and water was poured for all of them. The same man then proceeds to walk past me four or five times with no greeting or anything. I decided to walk out but then two men came in after me and seated themselves. I decided to seat myself too and waited. The host went over to the men, poured glasses of water for them and spoke to them in a friendly manner. Don't pass this one up because of location-it's in a small strip mall near WalMart and my husband and I almost changed our minds when we pulled up. It's a nice change from the usual chain fare, especially if you've been traveling for days. I've travelled to places where Indian food is prepared as local cuisine and this was as good. The mulligatawny soup was served hot and with just the right spice. Everything was served fresh and the service was good also. They also carry Indian beers-we tried the Kingfisher and were pleasantly surprised. The owner is very nice and asked for recommendations and suggestions from our travels. We ate here in Nov/Dec and had zero complaints on food, service, etc. Tonight we had a totally different experience. Lamb Korma didn't taste anything like it should.. very 'tomatoey' sauce. Naan was little over cooked. The bathrooms are disgusting , there was black mold covering the entire one foot perimeter of the women's bathroom. Had i seen it first i wouldn't have eaten there. So disappointed since our last visit was amazing. There was only one other customer at 730 on Saturday night. Something has changed unfortunately. My husband was put off by chipped plates and very cheap paper napkins. Had the food been great i wouldn't care! read more
