One of the best sandwiches I've had! It's probably the best sub you'll have in CVille area! The white sauce thing is the bomb!

    Smoked Turkey Sandwich
    Tanya B.

Went to Charlottesville for the weekend because I used to live there and wanted to try some of my old favorite food places. I ordered ahead of time the night before because I wanted to pick it up in the morning. I ordered a smoked Turkey sandwich with extra roasted tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles and Asiago and edam cheese, with extra cheese for both kinds on my sandwich. I specifically ordered their house dressing on top of my sandwich as well as on the side and one side of mustard and one side of mayo. I also ordered two bags of specific flavors of chips the route crab chips and the route pickle chips. For the drink I ordered peace tea. I placed the order online using their own ordering system and thought it would make it easy to package up for me. Apparently not. I got there and checked the bag as I always do with to go orders and there were no sides at all in the bag, no chips, and no drink. I asked the cashier why there was no sides of sauce and she said that the house dressing was on there and they had run out of it the morning I was picking it up to get it packaged. I said ok, but it's on the sandwich right? She said it was. I also mentioned that there was no mayo side or mustard side in the bag. She thought I only had the house dressing which if she had just looked at the receipt on the side of the bag she would have known was not the case. How does one run out of their house dressing which should be always in plentiful supply? And how can they run out in the morning before they open? Regardless they should have made a new batch for the new day/week before opening, especially since there was an order with it on the sandwich. I would have waited for them to make the sauce, but the cashier was rude and aloof, and didn't seem to care at all about her job or my order. She placed one packet of mustard and one packet of mayo in my bag after I asked about the sides, and they were just the kinds you get at fast food places (in much bigger quantities and for free) not a true side. I was going to buy another couple items and when I asked about their house tuna salad and chicken salad that they make for sandwiches but also by themselves for purchase (which is what I was going to buy), she motioned toward the open refrigerated section and I looked and said they didn't have the tuna salad or the chicken salad, she said they only use them for sandwiches which she could have told me they changed their menu this way. I was about to leave after buying my husband a root beer and almost forgot that they didn't place my chips in the bag either and asked where they were. She told me I had to grab them myself but didn't remind me or say so as I was leaving....I know I forgot but they should have seen the order and made sure I left with everything that I purchased. Luckily I remembered before leaving. I come home to eat the sandwich and see that not only did they not put any house dressing on my sandwich at all (remember she had reassured me it was on there), but the cheese they used was dried out and old on the sides. The food wasn't super great like I remembered it but mostly due to the shitty customer service. The cashier was very rude and the person who makes the food was clearly lazy in not making new dressing, and assumed I would just not notice. I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon unless they really change their employees' attitudes towards customers and treating people with kindness and respect, or hire new staff who actually care about doing a decent job. You need to have good customer service period. Take it Away Sandwich Shop has definitely gone downhill in just the couple of years that I've left the city. I would recommend people steer clear of this place unless you want your day ruined, and to feel bad about yourself for just asking simple questions. Terrible service, ok food.

Take It Away is a nice, quaint sandwich shop nestled on the outskirts of The Corner. It offers custom-made sandwiches and "local favorites" for customers who have a hard time deciding what to order. I ordered the Elliewood Club for ~$12. The sandwich is classically delicious and wholesome. It came out a little funky in shape, but taste-wise, it is exactly what you'd expect. It is on the chewier side because of the dry grain bread but makes up for it with the House Dressing. The dressing is more tangy and tart than I'd prefer but is a necessity for this sandwich. Overall, an average sandwich that hits the spot when you're in the mood for cold-cut sandwiches. Take It Away is Charlottesville's local sandwich shop and is a must try. It doesn't have that WOW factor, but it's a great spot for lunch with friends and family!

Wrong order. At least they got the bread right. Gluten free

I decided to give this place another try. There aren't many places yet that offer gluten free sandwiches, so I really really wanted it to work out. I asked for the "very veggie" in gluten free bread. I was told that wouldn't work on gluten free bread cause it's thin and hummus is thick. I said that's OK! I also asked for no peppers, add cucumber. Well, yet again, I got peppers and no cucumber. Ugh. Won't be going back.... just be aware, they don't want to sell what they offer and they don't go by what your receipt says...

Great sandwiches!!!! the house dressing awesome and should not be missed. I had the salami sandwich which hit the spot!! You can also personalize and build your own sandwich, choosing a protein and any extra toppings (unlimited) with it, or have the choice of going with their preset sandwich combos (which I ordered. I felt like they had just the right amount of ingredients) You know how you can order ~too many~ ingredients at subway? Yeah, it was NOT that :) The chocolate chip cookie also tasted sooo good, soft and full of delicious chocolate. They take your orders outside quickly and are efficient in getting them out timely.

I'm such a sandwich girl, and these were just what I needed! Their sourdough is very fresh, so I recommend getting that. Their curbside pickup was easy to follow as they gave you perfect directions and descriptions of their expectations. Pickup took a little while (8-10 minute wait after my pickup time), but the hunger was manageable. To me, their house sauce taste like Mayo and mustard mixed together. It was good on my sandwich, but I definitely could've just ordered Mayo and mustard and not tell the difference. Either way, I'm glad I came and would definitely be back for a nice sandwich again.

I like it! Great choice of unique sandwiches close to everything. They've got a lot of other artisan-like choices as well. It hit the spot.

Classic sandwich spot for the Hoos and definitely a must try for any visitors in town! Just a very well made sandwich, not much needed to be said! Lovely food, lovely people, and super quick ordering process.

I recently went to the Cville Dairy Market to check out the food stalls. After debating where I would try my best bite (originally had my eye on Angie's Kitchen), I decided to try Take It Away as a first-time customer. Overall, the logo and design is really appealing. I love the look and I'm a sucker for a good sandwich (nothing fancy, right?). I did a make-your-own sandwich to save a few bucks and because I wasn't a fan of the speciality sandwich combos. I ended up ordering a salami and cheese with an in-house herb mayonnaise. I ordered a half and half iced tea too. The food was fine, but I was a bit disappointed with the service. The cashier was a bit short and avoided eye-contact with me while I was ordering. With the mask, it makes communication that much harder. When asked questions, she was very cold and allusive. As a first time customer, it really put me off, especially when I picked up my food and she returned to the counter to laugh with the other employees and sit on her phone. Hello? Paying customer here? Nothing is worse than biting into a sandwich after experiencing an unpleasant interaction. Not to mention, I got roasted tomatoes in my order for an up-charge of .40 when I asked for a traditional L&T. I could walk over to the Market and get the same sandwich for $2 cheaper. Overall, the opening of the Dairy Market is a big success for Cville and I'm excited to try the food stalls. Would I order Take It Away again? Nope! Always a delicious lunch! I have been coming here for at least ten years, from my college days to now when I'm back in town to visit. I am always impressed by the homemade house dressing, which is a MUST ADD on any sandwich. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming. The wall of chips when you walk in provides infinite chip options, which I appreciate. They also serve other delicious sides like pasta salad and potato salad. On my most recent visit, I ordered a turkey sandwich on wheat bread with provolone, romaine, and house dressing.

("There's someone smoking outside, is it open? The sign says closed?") This dragged on for a few months, then finally they were clearly re-open! But I heard things had changed, so I was slightly hesitant to go back in case the Holly's I fell in love with was now a tattered dream. After some new reviews rolling in, I decided it was worth the trip back. It looks super nice and clean inside now! It was admittedly slightly dingy before, so way to go, Holly's. It seems like they still need to add some lighting; once the sun went down we were basically in darkness at our table. There was a fixture connection hanging empty above us, so I assume they are still adding things and finishing things up slowly. We were there on Thursday's "game meet-up," where the gamers of Cville crawl out from their holes and head to Holly's for a pint and a game or two with like-minded folks and friends. Our group, a party of five, came together and sat at a table to play our own game. It's a fun environment when the beer is flowing and all the tables around you are filled with various board games (think: catan, ticket to ride, pandemic, and many others I've never heard of). There was only one waitress who was also on the bar, so she was worked off her butt and would have benefitted immensely from even one other person to help. But because we had our game going, the slow service wasn't too much of an issue. Unfortunately my beloved, bigger than my head Club sandwich is off the menu, and they've streamlined their sides service with the sandwiches now, so you always get a side salad and fries unless you ask otherwise I guess. I got the reuben and it was huge, stuffed full, and delicious. I felt like the melty cheese wasn't as present as it could have been, but it was still good. The side salad is meager, but I'm always thankful for fresh greens when eating greasy sandwiches, so no complaints. The fries were hot and delicious. My husband got the BLTA, (a blt with avocado) and it was also huge and looked great. Definitely something I'd think about ordering another time, once I know tomatoes are in season. So, to wrap things up. Some menu changes left me a bit sad, but what they are delivering is still tasty and still priced fair especially for the portion you get. The service is friendly and the renovations made a nice difference. Still looks like a dive from the outside, but inside it's clean and tasteful. The bathroom upgrade is especially welcome and appreciated. Go. Avoid Thursday if you don't want to be crowded by gamers, or go on Thursday if you're into that. I assume other week nights aren't quite as hopping. Glad I finally returned to Holly's!
