We really enjoyed our first visit to Great Harvest Bread Company. The owner was kind enough to make us four sandwiches just before closing. We got 3 of the classic sandwiches and 1 signature sandwich. We tried the curried tuna salad, ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, and roast beef. Two were on the Dakota bread, one on white, and one on honey wheat. I couldn't resist adding a half dozen of stuffing rolls to the order. I enjoyed both sandwiches I tried, half of the turkey and half of the tuna. Both of these were on the Dakota bread, which I'm a big fan of. We used to buy it at the city market along with a loaf of their cinnamon chip (highly recommended for french toast). I didn't get to try the ham and cheese or the roast beef. The guys ate those quickly and certainly didn't offer to share. Its going to be hard to pick which sandwich to get on our return visit, so many good options! One thing is for sure, I need to hurry and order stuffing rolls for Thanksgiving, along with a pumpkin roll for my husband. We love visiting this local bakery since they mill all their own grain for their breads and baked goods! Plenty of parking in McIntyre plaza and they have an extensive sandwich menu too using their own yummy breads. I ordered a pumpkin chocolate chip muffin for my little one and you can get half sandwiches so I ordered a Turkey and cheese with lettuce and tomato on Popeye bread which is my favorite. I also ordered a iced coffee with coffee ice cubes and they serve Shenandoah Joe coffee! The service is always welcoming and they love to give you suggestions. They bake different breads each day but sometimes you can catch deals on day old breads. Tons of local products they carry too such as wine, honey, jams, soup mixes, pasta sauce and the list goes on. Great spot to put together a local Cville gift basket or just to grab a sandwich and sit either inside or outside at their tables. They even have a kids play area!! read more

You know those local places that you always see but can never seem to get to? Yeah? Well that was Great Harvest for me. I always see their stuff advertised or on Instagram and find myself saying "That place looks good, I should stop in". Well that day finally came and I'm not sure what took so long. I had to pick up dinner for the family and wanted to go someplace new. It was just after 5:30 during the week. I had read somewhere that GHBC stopped making sandwiches at 5pm. Out of sheer desperation I called to see if they were still making them. The owner answered the phone and said she could, but just let her know the order now so she can begin. I was thankful especially since they closed at 6:00. I ordered a Ham & Cheese on white (adventurous, I know), turkey and cheese on Dakota, Tuna Curry on Dakota, and Roast Beef on wheat. The roast beef was for me, but I had a chance to taste everything. The tuna curry was unlike any sandwich I had tasted. Typically I think of a tuna sandwich as a more sweet sandwich, but this had a hint of spice that changed the flavor profile. The roast beef was very good. I could eat the spicy horseradish dressing on anything. The bread held up well considering the size of the sandwiches and the juicy toppings. While getting a rundown of all their products, she said we needed to try her savory stuffing rolls. After getting a sniff, We grabbed a bag to take home. It was like Thanksgiving in a roll, perfect prep for the upcoming holiday. So obviously answers: Yes they make their own bread. No they don't have every bread every day. Yes the bread is all wonderful. Yes, they have desserts and sweets as well (the biscotti looked great!) Yes they ship across the US. Yes, they have a lot of other local items that can you use to create your own gift basket (or box to ship). Yes, they have outdoor seating. Yes, they are taking covid precautions seriously. Yes, they are taking bread and dessert orders for Thanksgiving. Yes, the owner will make you laugh (like she is funny, not for any other reason). Finally made it into Great Harvest Bread Company, when I was early for an appointment over in the same shopping center, McIntire Plaza. It was a frigid day, and immediately upon walking in to the warm and fragrant bakery, I was enamored. The rows and racks of fresh baked goods, many still being packaged up right after baking, as it was still before 10 am. I came in for a sandwich loaf, so a friendly employee showed me the options, disclosed her favorites, and told me a little about the different loaves. I chose the Dakota loaf, a seedy, hearty-looking loaf that the woman said was her favorite. (It is yummy! Hefty but still soft enough for a good sandwich.) I stood staring through the display glass long after I had decided on my loaf, because I was having an inner battle about how much else I would or wouldn't get. Eventually I decided I couldn't resist the face-sized fresh-baked cookies, and I had an excuse: I was going to be pushing my toddler to his limits by making him wait past his usual lunch time to stay with me at my appointment, so (I could say) the chocolate cookie with M&Ms would be a good tool for bribing him later to behave on our car ride home (not just a lapse in my own ability to resist temptation--I swear!) The place is casual, friendly, inviting, and not at all intimidating, as other bakeries can be. They are churning out wholesome and approachable loaves of bread, cookies, muffins, and other sweet breakfast/dessert treats, with a definite American style of baking. These aren't French patissiers, so don't try to find a palmier or Kouign-amann. I will definitely be back to try more and inhale the bakery scent. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is that I feel like some of the prices are a bit high for what you're getting, but I think they might use local grains when available, so maybe that's why the prices seem higher than some other locally baked breads. Great place to get a few baked goods and coffee. We happened to come here with a friend after seeing Cville Coffee was way too crowded. The staff was extremely nice and even went as far as to perform some quality control on their muffins, stating they weren't up to par and giving us an extra. I'm not sure what was wrong with them, looked fine, and our friend said it tasted fine too. We also got two cookies, one salted caramel, and I think one turtle (or something like that). Both were really good and had a chewy texture, how we like cookies to be. They let us sit and chat amongst each other for a while and were still of the same niceness on the way out. We also opted to get 3 sugar cookies to go, those were really good as well. I'm not a fan of frosting, so for me it was too much, but if you like just a little layer on top, these cookies are for you. This location isn't the closest for us and we have some closer to home. We hope the local location has the same good goods and service. Came in today totally after being in the same plaza for a different event and was happily surprised! They technically were closed due to a bake and sip event, but let me and my friend in anyways to purchase some food. I ended up getting a bread pudding that we split, and I thought it was very delicious! My only qualm is that the bread was a bit hard, but I came in after closing so I completely understand. The owner (I believe) was super friendly and gave me and my friend excellent recommendations! I have been here a few times, the first by recommendation of a local and I've never really been disappointed. Currently obsessed with the curry tuna sandwich! Great harvest makes wonderful bread and I really appreciate that they take pride in their ingredients and products. My first trip I explained that I had never been in so I was offered samples and given extremely large samples from who I now know is he owner. They are generous every time and allow folks to sample anything they please. There was this interesting looking pastry I asked about once called a "Savannah Bar" I didn't ask the details but when I sampled it I bought one immediately. It was like strawberry cobbler in a bar form. Incredibly delicious, moist, sweet, crispy wonderfulness. I looked up "Savannah bar" on Pinterest and found a few copy cat recipes but it's obviously a Great Harvest recipe and I'm dying to make them at home. If I could afford to spend eight or nine dollars on a loaf of bread instead of three or four I would totally be here weekly for a loaf. read more

I love this place. Stopped on the way to Virginia Tech. Came in to get some C'ville Crunch. Brought a friend who had beer been. Sidney offered us a sample of the lemon bar as well as C'ville crunch for my friend. He actually like it. He didn't like the chocolate sunflower butter. He said it made the bread dry. We went at about 2:45 and ran into an 18wheeler which blocked all the parking. But there was still some available out front when it moved. Sidney was so polite. She asked where we came from, did we know of the calendar menu items. She even asked if I wanted sliced or unsliced C'ville crunch. I even picked up dog treats. The dining area is always clean. Looking into the cooking/prep area, everything was clean. I love the way the sun shines in and makes it feel warm and inviting. I have been a long-time reader of katheats, so I was pretty excited to stop here on a road trip to NC. We went on a drizzly Saturday morning when there were no crowds. It was a lot smaller than I'd imagined! But the place smelled fabulous as all Great Harvest bakeries do. This one feels a bit more unique and with more personal touches than the other franchise locations I've visited. The folks working seemed to be college-aged, and the service was mostly okay. One of the bread loaves we asked for was on the menu but unavailable because it had 20 mins left in the oven and to cool (I guess I can't really be mad at them for baking things as freshly as possible). The cinnamon chip loaf was to die for as usual - it's honestly my favorite bread in the world, and it made our car smell amazing for the 6 hour road trip! Big bonuses - this place is clearly very family friendly. There is a corner of the bakery setup as a kids play area, where my two year old hung out the whole time. We also wanted to be sure and change his diaper before getting on the road, and the bathroom was exceptionally family friendly with a nice changing table. The c'ville crunch granola was great, and overall I'm really glad we had the chance to visit the bakery. read more

She actually stayed past the closing time at 5 pm because I called that Claire was running late and couldn't get by to pickup my three loaves of bread until 5:20 pm. THIS IS SERVICE. Then Claire bought several more loaves to give me. I have to say that the Mexican chocolate teacake is the most delicious dessert for a chocolate fiend like me. Traveling through town and stopped in for lunch with 3 kids. I partly chose them for the gluten free bread but unfortunately they said they didn't make any today. I asked what the soup of the day was and they said they didn't make soup today either. Was happy to see a little children's play area and a clean baths room. My daughter wanted a few slices of a half loaf of bread they had with their items. We were told we would have to pay for a sandwich because they could sell us just slices of bread. So we paid for a full sandwich. I had a scoop of chicken salad that did not have much flavor at all (with no g free bread mind you). My husband did enjoy his sandwich. I love the bread here! The Rosemary Garlic bread was beyond amazing. Each bite was dense and flavorful and left me wanting more. The bread is moist and chewy and tastes even better after it's toasted. Makes for a perfect, hearty breakfast to keep me energized throughout the day. Also a great pre-workout snack! I also tried the Cinnamon Swirl. Liked the Rosemary Garlic bread, better, but this one's also delicious. It's sweet and sticky, much more like a dessert pastry than a bread. The service at this bakery is also fantastic! The staff members were patient with me as I asked to sample all the different types of breads. They were also very generous and gave me huge pieces of samples and even offered to let me sample their desserts and cookies. I was full after eating all the samples. Prices are high for bread. $8 or so for a loaf of bread, but it's definitely worth it! The quality is amazing and the taste and texture even better! Can't wait to come back again to try more breads. Finally, parking is convenient and there's also seating in the store. There are also sandwiches and other deli items you can order. Overall, great bakery! This place is kind of like a suburban Panera except less busy. I know they're a chain/franchise, but I've had good sandwiches at a NoVA location so I gave the C'ville one a shot. I grabbed a curried tuna sandwich & cup of coffee here when I was in town earlier this fall. I think it was on Dakota bread but what really stood out to me was that the place was empty (dead) on a weekend afternoon and that I couldn't get lettuce/tomato/onion on the sandwich because ... drum roll... no onions. Just... what? I would figure that a franchise place would at least have standard offerings. It seems like such a small thing and so easy to just "get it right". For perspective, my family owns a few eating establishments and the idea of not carrying certain staple food items is just bizarre. This is especially true considering that this place is in a strip mall as opposed to a prime location like the Corner or the Downtown Mall -- if people are going to go out of their way to visit your place, you need to be on your A game, not whatever you're currently doing. I used to live in C'ville and I'll probably review a couple of my favorite places in the next couple days. I'm not a jerk so I'm not going to run off a list of better C'ville places, but dig around yelp a little bit and you can figure it out. read more

I miss the days when I lived above Great Harvest, as we always had fresh, delicious bread in our kitchen and the heavenly aroma of bread baking as we walked outside of our apartment. Pretty much everything I've ever tried here is delicious. From the sandwiches (Pimento cheese is my favorite) to the several types of bread (even the gluten free), to the free samples of bread they give you when you stop in, to the scuffins (definitely my favorite- who doesn't love cream cheese in a muffin that is also kind of a scone?!), you absolutely cannot go wrong here for a breakfast or lunch stop. Oh, to top it all off, the service is always friendly, and the coffee is delicious and from Shenandoah Joe! There is also a great selection of local jams and spreads of sorts in the middle of the store. You can even sit in to dine for a quick lunch with a friend. What a find! Great food with the most amazing bread. My BLT on honey wheat was very good and my husband's roast beef on nine grain was also very filling. We got a free slice of cinnamon bread which was delicious .. we had our choice from a bunch of breads. I had to get trail mix and an oat crunchie for the car ride and a lovely raspberry, blackberry scone for dessert tonight. But I had to say no to buying one of the amazing peach cobblers. It is a loaf of bread with peach slices and some granola like crunchy swirled in. It wasn't practical (No room in my luggage) but it was hard to leave it behind. The best part is they mill their own flour using the whole kernel of wheat and it is milled within 24 hours and the bread is thus super fresh and very tasty. The sales people were very friendly, service was quick and the little tables get cramped but were fine for the two of us. Stop by ..it is a treat! read more
